The experimental infection caused by yellow fever virus (strain 17D) induced the appearance of anomalies in the behavior of BALB/c mice, revealed by the labyrinth methods. These anomalies in behavior were manifest in the animals with the strongly pronounced clinical picture of the disease and always preceded the clinical signs. Anomalies in behavior appeared in the animals in the complete absence of the clinical signs of the disease and could persist for a long time even with minimum pathological changes in the brain.

The connections between the two vestibular nuclei permit vestibular compensation after unilateral lesions. The interactions between the vestibular and the visual and proprioceptive system can support vestibular compensation. Our physical training program for the treatment of vertigo is based on these mechanisms. The training consists of fixation exercises, smooth pursuit and motor learning by proprioceptive cognition. The signs observed in 6 cases of peripheral vestibular disease included incoordination, head tilt and nystagmus. The intensity of the signs varied greatly with duration of the disease, and in 3 cases facial paralysis was also present. Tympanosclerosis was demonstrable in all cases subject to radiology. Trauma was the causative factor in most cases. The causes of, and relationships between, vestibular dysfunction and concomitant facial paralysis are discussed. The exact etiology of the tympanosclerosis is unknown.

Due to the lack of objective examination method, the diagnosis of Meniere's disease mainly relies on subjective symptoms. MRI of the inner ear after gadolinium injections had become a new technology in otology in recent years. The image can clearly distinguish perilymph from endolymph in the labyrinth and can be applied to the imaging diagnosis, evaluation of treatment and the pathogenesis research of Meniere's disease. This article is a review of the development and the application in clinical research of this new technology.
