Using the Java language to develop computer based patient records for use on the Internet.

The development of the Java Programming Language by Sun Microsystems has provided a new tool for the development of Internet based applications. Our preliminary work has shown how Java can be used to program an Internet based CBPR. Java is well suited to the needs of patient records and can interface with clinical data repositories written in MUMPS or SQL.

Symbol vocabulary and the focus of conversations: augmenting language development for youth with mental retardation.

Communication devices designed to augment the language development of individuals with severe cognitive disabilities and little or no functional speech typically contain primarily nouns because they seem easiest to acquire and evaluate. In this study, the effect of a more diverse vocabulary was assessed. Systematic observations of the use of computerized speech-output devices by 12 youth with moderate or severe mental retardation and severe spoken language disability and by their partners were made over a 2-year period. Social-regulative symbols (e.g., "please," "I'm finished") were used as so

Factors associated with the development of psychiatric illness in children with early speech/language problems.

This paper reports on the correlates of psychiatric illness in children with speech and language disorders. Of 600 children selected from a community speech clinic, 50% were found to have diagnosable psychiatric disorders according to DSM-III criteria. These "psychiatrically ill" children were compared to the "psychiatrically well" children in the sample on a variety of developmental, socioeconomic, medical, and psychosocial factors. Although some differences were found between the well and ill children in other factors, the majority of the differences, and the most highly significant differen

Detecting Misspelled Drug Names Using Transformer-Based Language Models: Model Development and External Validation.

BACKGROUND: Misspellings in medication names can compromise patient safety, reduce data utility, and impede large-scale data initiatives that integrate medication information from electronic health records (EHRs). Existing methods for detecting misspelled medical terms are mostly dictionary-based and can lead to high false-positive rates when correctly spelled but previously unseen (out-of-vocabulary) terms are encountered. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate domain-specific, transformer-based language models for detecting misspelled drug names, with an emphasis on performance for uns

An automatic end-to-end chemical synthesis development platform powered by large language models.

The rapid emergence of large language model (LLM) technology presents promising opportunities to facilitate the development of synthetic reactions. In this work, we leveraged the power of GPT-4 to build an LLM-based reaction development framework (LLM-RDF) to handle fundamental tasks involved throughout the chemical synthesis development. LLM-RDF comprises six specialized LLM-based agents, including Literature Scouter, Experiment Designer, Hardware Executor, Spectrum Analyzer, Separation Instructor, and Result Interpreter, which are pre-prompted to accomplish the designated tasks. Epilepsy and Language Development in 8-36-Month-Old Toddlers with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

This paper aimed to assess language development in infants and toddlers with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and epilepsy, which increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder. We assessed language development in 61 patients with TSC at 8-36 months using a standardized Speech Development and Communication Inventory tool. The results showed differences in outcomes due to the duration of the seizures and the number of drugs (pFDR = 0.007 **-pFDR = 0.037 *). Children with TSC with longer epilepsy duration and receiving more antiepileptic drugs have a greater risk of language development delay.

Development of Sign Language Motion Recognition System for Hearing-Impaired People Using Electromyography Signal.

Sign languages are developed around the world for hearing-impaired people to communicate with others who understand them. Different grammar and alphabets limit the usage of sign languages between different sign language users. Furthermore, training is required for hearing-intact people to communicate with them. Therefore, in this paper, a real-time motion recognition system based on an electromyography signal is proposed for recognizing actual American Sign Language (ASL) hand motions for helping hearing-impaired people communicate with others and training normal people to understand the sign

If we don't look, we won't see: Measuring language development to inform literacy instruction.

Oral language abilities enable children to learn to read, and they predict future academic achievement and life outcomes. However, children with language impairment frequently go unidentified because schools do not systematically measure oral language development. Given that identification paves the way for treatment, schools should increase attention to oral language development, particularly within response to intervention (RTI) frameworks, which aim to prevent learning disabilities by identifying and intervening at early stages. Formal schooling should address language comprehension (in add

Self-locomotion and spatial language and spatial cognition: insights from typical and atypical development.

Various studies have shown that occurrence of locomotion in infancy is correlated with the development of spatial cognitive competencies. Recent evidence suggests that locomotor experience might also be important for the development of spatial language. Together these findings suggest that locomotor experience might play a crucial role in the development of linguistic-cognitive spatial skills. However, some studies indicate that, despite their total deprivation of locomotor experience, young children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) have the capacity to acquire and use rich spatial represent

Experiences from a language development intervention in nursing homes from the perspective of first-line managers, language advocates and care staff: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: An increase in foreign-born workers in nursing homes (NHs) has challenged first-line managers to implement language initiatives for their staff. Evidence regarding foreign-born care workers' experiences of language support initiatives is still scarce. Thus, the aim of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of a language development intervention "Talk about Work" from the perspective of first-line managers (FLMs), language advocates and participating care staff. METHODS: An explorative qualitative study using on-going evaluation methods following the intervention "Ta

Moving ahead in language: observations on a report of precocious language development in 3-4 year old children with spinal muscular atrophy type II.

Benony and Benony in a recent issue of this Journal have presented new data on the precocity of language acquisition in children with type II spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), at age 36-47 months. They refer to our interim report of advanced early language development in these motor-impaired children, which covers the age period 18-35 months. Here, we provide more details of our findings and discuss them in relation to their report and our theory of the role of the procedural system in language learning.

Peer Dependency Anxiety in Adolescence: Development and Initial Psychometric Evaluation of an Arabic-Language Measure.

BACKGROUND: During adolescence, peer relationships play a central role in identity development and emotional adjustment. Excessive worry and distress about the potential or actual loss of peer support referred to as peer dependency anxiety may increase vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Despite its significance, no validated measure exists for Arabic-speaking adolescents. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the Peer Dependency Anxiety Scale (PDAS) among Jordanian adolescents. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed in Jordan in 2025. In the qualitative phase, items were genera

Second Language Learners' Cognitive Evaluation of GenAI Interactive Learning Experience: Scale Development and Network Analysis.

As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes increasingly integrated into second language (L2) learning, there is a growing need for reliable instruments to assess learners' cognitive evaluation of GenAI-mediated interactive learning experiences. This study developed and validated the GenAI L2 Interactive Learning Experience Scale (AI-L2-ILES) among 1130 Chinese university students. Drawing on an interactive experience perspective and adapting it to L2 learning, the study conceptualized learners' cognitive evaluation of GenAI interaction as comprising five dimensions: Effectiveness, S

Improving Radiology Report Error Detection Using a Multipass Large Language Model: Framework Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Large language model (LLM) proofreaders for radiology reports generate many false positives (FPs) due to the low prevalence of errors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether an optimized LLM framework could improve both precision and cost-efficiency without compromising error detection capability. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 1000 radiology reports (radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging; 250 each) were sampled from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III database. Parental Social and Musical Characteristics, the Home Music Environment, and Child Language Development in Infancy.

Parents use music, especially singing, to interact with their young children, supporting parent-child bonding and social communication. Little is known about the parental attributes that support musical interactions with their infants. In this exploratory study, we analyzed self-report data from 43 caregiver/infant dyads at up to four time points (9, 12, 15, and 18 months) to assess parent social motivation and musical training as predictors of the home music environment overall, parental singing, and parental beliefs in the benefits of music. We also investigated the home music environment as

Speech sound development of young Dutch children with a developmental language disorder: A complex matter.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of all young children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) also have problems with speech production. Research on speech sound development and clinical diagnostics of speech production difficulties focuses mostly on accuracy; it relates children's phonological realizations to adult models. Contrarily to these relational analyses, independent analyses indicate the sounds and structures children produce irrespective of accuracy. Such analyses are likely to provide more insight into a child's phonological strengths and limitations, and may thus provide better

Supporting language development in Lebanese preschools: SLT and pre-KT practice and perception of roles.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are increasingly engaging in school-based interventions targeting children with language difficulties. Collaborative work between teachers and SLTs has shown to be beneficial in fostering language development in all children. Both groups of professionals have different but complementary roles in offering language support, according to children's needs. Effective collaboration between SLTs and teachers requires both parties to understand their roles and practices in schools. However, little is known about language support practices in Lebanese p
