Speech and language therapy for adolescents in youth justice: A series of empirical single-case studies.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents in contact with youth justice are a vulnerable and marginalized group at high risk of developmental language disorder (DLD) and other communication difficulties. Though preliminary studies have demonstrated the benefits of speech and language therapy (SLT) services in youth justice, limited research has empirically tested the efficacy of intervention in these settings. AIMS: To evaluate the extent to which intensive, one-to-one language intervention improved the communication skills of incarcerated adolescents with below-average (> 1 SD below the mean) language and/or

Speech and language therapy for primary progressive aphasia across the UK: A survey of current practice.

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) describes a heterogeneous group of language-led dementias. People with this type of dementia are increasingly being referred to speech and language therapy (SLT) services. Yet, there is a paucity of research evidence focusing on PPA interventions and little is known about SLT practice in terms of assessment and provision of intervention. AIMS: To survey the practices of SLTs in the areas of assessment and intervention for people with PPA. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A 37-item, pilot-tested survey was distributed electronically through the Royal College

The provision of speech-language therapy in services destined to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) worldwide has been a major public health concern; therefore, discussion about the services and therapies required has become important. This study aimed to characterize the provision of speech-language therapy services in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. To this end, a questionnaire with 23 questions was developed based on the Balanced Scorecard methodology. This questionnaire was applied to 854 individuals assisted in 25 ASD services. The results show that only 64% of the ASD services offer speech-language therapy and that the numb

An Ecosystem of Intelligent ICT Tools for Speech-Language Therapy Based on a Formal Knowledge Model.

The language and communication constitute the development mainstays of several intellectual and cognitive skills in humans. However, there are millions of people around the world who suffer from several disabilities and disorders related with language and communication, while most of the countries present a lack of corresponding services related with health care and rehabilitation. On these grounds, we are working to develop an ecosystem of intelligent ICT tools to support speech and language pathologists, doctors, students, patients and their relatives. This ecosystem has several layers and c

The 'robustness' of vocabulary intervention in the public schools: targets and techniques employed in speech-language therapy.

This study examined vocabulary intervention-in terms of targets and techniques-for children with language impairment receiving speech-language therapy in public schools (i.e., non-fee-paying schools) in the United States. Vocabulary treatments and targets were examined with respect to their alignment with the empirically validated practice of rich vocabulary intervention. Participants were forty-eight 5-7-year-old children participating in kindergarten or the first-grade year of school, all of whom had vocabulary-specific goals on their individualized education programmes. Two therapy sessions

Rehabilitation or compensation: time for a fresh perspective on speech and language therapy for dysphagia and Parkinson's disease?

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease and can have negative consequences for physical health and quality of life. A variety of treatment options are available to clinicians working with people who have dysphagia and Parkinson's disease. These options can be broadly categorized as being compensatory or rehabilitative in nature. AIMS: To explore the evidence behind treatment options available to clinicians working with dysphagia and Parkinson's disease and to draw conclusions about whether compensatory or rehabilitative approaches are likely to provide the best outcom

Trajectory and outcomes of speech language therapy in the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS): case report.

The aim of this study was to describe the trajectory and the outcomes of speech-language therapy in Prader-Willi syndrome through a longitudinal study of the case of an 8 year-old boy, along four years of speech-language therapy follow-up. The therapy sessions were filmed and documental analysis of information from the child's records regarding anamnesis, evaluation and speech-language therapy reports and multidisciplinary evaluations were carried out. The child presented typical characteristics of Prader-Willi syndrome, such as obesity, hyperfagia, anxiety, behavioral problems and self aggres

Staying on the same wavelength: talking about talking in paediatric speech and language therapy sessions.

Participants in speech and language therapy sessions engage in talk about talking to accomplish different social actions: identifying and explaining linguistic concepts; correcting language use; and repairing misunderstanding. Different traditions in interaction research have examined the practices of topic management, correction, and repair in instructional and mundane conversation, but the need to disentangle the common thread of 'language' that runs through these practices in speech and language therapy interaction has not been recognized. This paper examines three short extracts from trans

A narrative therapy approach to counseling: a model for working with adolescents and adults with language-literacy deficits.

PURPOSE: Remediation efforts with adolescents and adults with language-literacy deficits (LLD) may be hindered by concomitant factors such as decreased self-esteem and self-efficacy. Despite sound linguistically based remediation practices, treatment lacking integrated counseling components may fail to achieve optimal outcomes. In this tutorial, we recount a counseling approach, specifically a narrative therapy counseling approach based on constructivist theory, to be used with adolescents and adults with LLD. METHOD: A review of the literature includes research on the use of counseling in co

Intergenerational communication: fundamental but under-exploited theory for speech and language therapy with older people.

There is a body of research literature already applied in speech and language therapy practice that is concerned with communication between children and adults and the adaptations adults make to facilitate the development of language in children. There is much less and more recent literature concerned with intergenerational communication involving older people and older people in institutional care. This has not yet impacted on speech and language therapy practice, especially in the area of training others. The aims of this paper are (1) to describe some of the main theoretical concepts associ

A comparison of three approaches to delivering a speech and language therapy service to people with learning disabilities.

This research aimed to compare three different approaches to delivering a speech and language therapy service to people with learning disabilities, in order to make recommendations for future service delivery. The three approaches all involved working with key communication partners in the environment. They were: (i) working directly on a one-to-one basis with the person and partner; (ii) working indirectly by providing teaching for partners; and (iii) a combination of these two approaches. A teaching course called 'Talkabout' was used. Talkabout aims for staff to reach a recognised level of k

Attitudes of a group of South African speech-language pathologists towards stutterers and stuttering therapy.

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes of a group of South African speech-language pathologists towards stuttering and stuttering therapy. Further aims were to investigate whether a stereotype of stutterers was found among these speech-language pathologists, and to determine whether there was any relationship between the attitudes held about stutterers, and the therapists' training and experience. A random probability sample of respondents was selected from the population of speech therapists registered with the Interim Medical and Dental Council of South Africa (I.M.D.C.S.A.). A sel

Comparison of formal language therapy with supportive counseling for aphasia due to acute vascular accident.

A total of 60 right-handed patients with acute aphasia due to left hemispheral stroke were randomly assigned to two modes of therapy for six months, beginning one month after the ictus. Conventional speech therapy provided by professional speech pathologists twice weekly was compared with emotionally supportive counseling therapy, also provided by professional speech pathologists at the same intervals. Language function was tested periodically by the Porch Index of Communicative Ability. Fifty of the subjects were also tested at ten months after the ictus. There was no difference in the amount

Virtual Reality-Supported Speech Therapy in Children with Developmental Language Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Digital technologies are increasingly explored as complementary tools in speech and language therapy for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. However, evidence on virtual reality-based interventions for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a Virtual Reality Rehabilitation System (VRRS)-based language intervention combined with standard speech therapy in preschool children with DLD. Secondary objectives included assessing the feasibility, usability, and safety of the VRRS-integrated interve

Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven technologies for managing pediatric speech and language therapy: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the high demand for speech and language therapy (SLT) for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs), accessible services remain limited. Technology-driven efforts have led to the development of systems and applications to assist children, parents, and therapists in the SLT process. AI and machine learning (ML), particularly through automatic speech recognition and audio processing techniques, play a central role in these advancements. This scoping review examines studies focusing on these techniques for managing the SLT process. METHODS: To include the most relevant studi

Speech and language therapy students: how do those with 'non traditional' university entry qualifications perform?

BACKGROUND: Entry to speech and language therapy (SLT) undergraduate pre-registration programmes in the UK is usually achieved through qualifications attained at school (e.g. A-levels). A smaller number of people who did not succeed academically at school enter through qualifications achieved post-schooling, e.g. Access to Higher Education courses. This second group of students are attractive recruits to SLT training programmes as they bring different experiences and backgrounds to the programme and to the SLT profession. However, there are no published studies that explore the academic perfor

Constraint-induced aphasia therapy stimulates language recovery in patients with chronic aphasia after ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Constraint-induced aphasia therapy (CIAT) offers potential benefits to individuals with history of aphasia-producing ischemic stroke. The goals of this pilot study were to implement the original German CIAT protocol, refine the treatment program, and confirm its efficacy in patients with chronic aphasia. MATERIAL/METHODS: We translated and modified the original CIAT protocol to include a hierarchy of individual skill levels for semantic, syntactic, and phonological language production, while constraining non-use behaviors. Three male participants with moderate to severe post-strok
