COVID-19 in pediatrics in Latin America: six years later.

INTRODUCTION: Six years later, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children in Latin America remains profound. Even though they were considered less susceptible to the disease, infants have emerged as one of the most affected populations, with the pandemic exposing deep inequities and magnifying vulnerabilities. This paper is presented as a perspective from SLIPE on COVID-19, providing expert insight into the current epidemiological situation in the region. AREAS COVERED: This review analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's health and wellbeing, education, and immunizati

Social Capital and COVID-19 Pandemic Relationship in Latin America.

This study examines how structural, relational, and cognitive dimensions of social capital influenced public responses to COVID-19 in 18 Latin American countries. Using Latinobarometer survey data from 2018, 2020, and 2023. This estimates multivariate Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) models to assess associations between social capital and behaviors, such as risk perception, preventive measures, and evaluation of government response. Relational social capital-particularly institutional trust-was consistently associated with greater compliance with preventiv

Basaglia's psychiatric reform: A bridge between Italy and Latin America.

More than 40 years after the approval of Law 180, Italy remains the only country to have entirely replaced psychiatric hospitals with a comprehensive, community-based mental health system. Driven by the vision of Franco Basaglia, this transformative reform moved psychiatric care away from institutionalization toward a model rooted in human rights, autonomy, and social inclusion. Although pioneering, the implementation was uneven, constrained by limited financial and human resources, and initially hindered by the absence of systems to evaluate care outcomes. Recent nationwide studies have revea

Juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus: Challenge for equity in Latin America.

Juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (jSLE) is an autoimmune disease that presents with greater severity and higher mobility than adult-onset SLE. In Latin America, data on its incidence, prevalence and clinical phenotypes are limited. Specialized care is available only in a few centers with trained pediatric rheumatologists leading to substantial diagnostic delays and barriers to timely treatment. This review highlights the urgent need for region-specific strategies to improve early diagnosis, expand access to specialized care and reduce disparities in outcomes for children and adolesc

Community Emergency Response Teams and disaster volunteerism in Latin America.

While it may be more common to think of a disaster volunteer as someone from outside the community who comes to assist during times of need, it is important not to forget those members of the community who are well poised to build grassroots resilience when provided with the necessary training and tools. This paper examines the state of disaster volunteerism in Latin America and Spanish-speaking communities in the USA who have been exposed to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programme, with an emphasis on the perceptions of and motivations for grassroots volunteerism from the persp

COVID-19 in chronic myeloid leukemia patients in Latin America.

This observational, multicenter study aimed to report the clinical evolution of COVID-19 in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in Latin America. A total of 92 patients presented with COVID-19 between March and December 2020, 26% of whom were severe or critical. The median age at COVID-19 diagnosis was 48 years (22-79 years), 32% were 60 years or older, and 61% were male. Thirty-nine patients presented with at least one comorbidity (42.3%). Eighty-one patients recovered (88%), and 11 (11.9%) died from COVID-19. There was one case of reinfection. Patients with a major molecular response pres

Genetic etiology of non-syndromic hearing loss in Latin America.

Latin America comprises all countries from South and Central America, in addition to Mexico. It is characterized by a complex mosaic of regions with heterogeneous genetic profiles regarding the geographical origin of the ancestors and proportions of admixture between the Native American, European and African components. In the first years following the findings of the role of the GJB2/GJB6 genes in the etiology of hearing loss, most scientific investigations about the genetics of hearing loss in Latin America focused on assessing the frequencies of pathogenic variants in these genes. More rece

Nontyphoidal Salmonella in Food from Latin America: A Systematic Review.

In Latin America, nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is one of the most important etiological agents of foodborne infections; it can survive in soil, water, and food even after processing. Here, we aimed to perform a systematic review by collecting data on the prevalence, serotypes, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of NTS isolated from different food products in Latin America, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Out of 1766 studies screened, 244 reports from 13 Latin American countries were eligible. Among these, 182 reported NTS prevalence

[Chromosome 7q11.23 duplication syndrome. First reported case in Latin America].

7q11.23 duplication syndrome is a disease caused by duplication of a region of chromosome 7 comprising 26 genes. The first case described in the literature was reported by Somerville et al. in 2005, who described a patient with dolichocephaly, high and narrow forehead, long eyelashes, high and wide nose, short philtrum, high arched palate, dental malocclusion, retrognathia, and severe language delay. We report the case of a Colombian patient with 7q11.23 duplication by comparative genomic hybridization techniques, and classical clinical findings, this being the first reported case in Colombia

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in Latin America. A public health problem?

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) is a well-recognized major opportunistic infection in HIV-infected patients. During the 1980s, the HIV pandemic turned PcP into a major worldwide medical and public health problem. With the introduction of Pneumocystis chemoprophylaxis and the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of HIV infection, there has been a decrease in PcP incidence in developed countries. However, the prevalence of AIDS-related PcP in developing countries remains high because a lot of people do not have access to ART or ignore their HIV infec

Rotavirus vaccine: early introduction in Latin America-risks and benefits.

Rotavirus infection is the cause of severe gastroenteritis of young children worldwide, leading to an estimate of 600,000 deaths a year. Efforts to develop an effective and safe vaccine resulted in licensing in 1998 of a live oral vaccine (RotaShield) that was withdrawn less than 1 year later when reports of cases of intussusception were linked to its application. This led to development of new rotavirus vaccine candidates that are currently in late phase III clinical trials. One of these vaccines, GlaxoSmithKline's Rotarix, was licensed in July 2004 to be used in Mexico. This review describes

[Understanding snake venoms: 50 years of research in Latin America].

As a tribute to Revista de Biología Tropical in its 50th anniversary, this review describes some of the main research efforts carried out in the study of the chemical composition and the mechanism of action of toxins present in the venoms of snakes distributed in Latin America. Venom proteins involved in neurotoxicity, coagulopathies, hemorrhage and muscle necrosis are discussed, together with a description of the inflammatory reactions elicited by these venoms and toxins. In addition, the search for inhibitory substances present in plants and animals that may be utilized in the neutralization

Impact of United States artificial organ development in Latin America.

The University of Minnesota may be considered the cradle of heart surgery worldwide. That is where Dr. F. John Lewis carried out the first open heart surgery in September, 1952 and repaired an atrial septal defect in a 5 year old girl. Thenceforth, new solutions to allow systematic heart surgeries have been extensively investigated. This requires boldness and imagination. In 1954, Dr. Walton Lillehei, who had been working in Minnesota since after the war, carried out the first surgery with cross circulation using a second person who worked as a circulatory support, while the patient's heart wa

Steatotic liver disease in Latin America: current views and perspectives.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, alcohol-associated liver disease and metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-related liver disease represent the principal subtypes of steatotic liver disease (SLD), together constituting a rapidly growing global health challenge. Latin America bears a disproportionately high burden of SLD, driven by the convergence of increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, high levels of harmful alcohol consumption, and a high frequency of genetic risk variants, particularly in the gene encoding patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing pro

Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Latin America: Unmet Needs, Barriers, and Challenges.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most common monogenic disorder predisposing individuals to premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Despite an estimated prevalence of 1 in 250 individuals, FH remains largely underdiagnosed and undertreated across Latin America, where more than 2 million people are expected to be living with FH. Early identification and intensive lipid-lowering therapy substantially improve clinical outcomes; however, multiple structural, socioeconomic, and educational barriers continue to limit optimal care throughout the region. FH detection rates remain lo
