A 2-year-old boy presented to Kapsowar Mission Hospital in Kenya with a history of general tiredness associated with mild, unilateral epistaxis and one episode of hematemesis. On admission, he had a hemoglobin value of 3.5 g/dL, with a white cell count of 20.6 × 109/L. The child was examined by the physician on call, with no source of bleeding found. Later that day, after a local physician noted that the presentation could be due to an unrecognized leech infestation, a deep examination of the oropharynx was performed with a laryngoscope and revealed a leech attached deep in the oropharynx. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The underlying mechanisms of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and effective treatment strategies remain unclear. DKD progression is closely associated with abnormal iron metabolism and ferroptosis in vivo. Leeches, used in traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis, are utilized to treat diabetes and its associated complications. Leeches effectively antagonize oxidative stress injury and exert protective effects on renal function. However, whether leeches can inhibit ferroptosis by modulating oxidative stress and iron me

Thermal stimulation of various parts of the skin in Hirudo medicinalis increases the frequency of spontaneous rhythmic excitation of Retzius neurons in leech ganglia. It was shown that the frequency of spontaneous rhythmic excitation of Retzius cells in the segmental ganglion increases only in response to thermal stimulation and returns to initial values upon cooling. This effect was also detected in neurons that are not directly connected by nerve fibers with the particular skin area. Changes in the frequency of spontaneous rhythmic excitation of Retzius cells in the segmental ganglion were o

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the internal and external morphological structures of two species of medicinal leeches (Hirudo sulukii and Hirudo verbana).
METHODS: Leech specimens were collected from various regions of Turkey between the years of 1995-2016. The leeches were first examined alive and later were stunned with 10% ethyl alcohol and fixed in 70% ethyl alcohol or 4% formaldehyde. After fixation, the internal morphology of leeches was examined by dissecting them under a stereo microscope.
RESULTS: Both species of leeches are dorso-ventrally flattened. H. verbana

UNLABELLED: There is significant interest in research to develop plant extracts with fungicidal activities that are less harmful to the environment and human health than synthetic fungicides. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of the extracts of Avicennia schaueriana against Colletotrichum and Cladosporium species and to identify the compounds responsible for the activity. Leaves and stems of A. schaueriana were extracted with ethanol and partitioned with petroleum ether, chloroform and ethyl acetate. The antifungal activity of such extracts was tested by bioautography agains

BACKGROUND: Leeches have gained a fearsome reputation by feeding externally on blood, often from human hosts. Orificial hirudiniasis is a condition in which a leech enters a body orifice, most often the nasopharyngeal region, but there are many cases of leeches infesting the eyes, urethra, vagina, or rectum. Several leech species particularly in Africa and Asia are well-known for their propensity to afflict humans. Because there has not previously been any data suggesting a close relationship for such geographically disparate species, this unnerving tendency to be invasive has been regarded on

At the core of the rhythmically active leech heartbeat central pattern generator are pairs of mutually inhibitory interneurons. Synaptic transmission between these interneurons consists of spike-mediated and graded components, both of which wax and wane on a cycle-by-cycle basis. Low-threshold Ca2+ currents gate the graded component. Ca imaging experiments indicate that these low-threshold currents are widespread in the neurons and that they contribute to neuron-wide changes in internal background Ca2+ concentration (Ivanov and Calabrese, 2000). During normal rhythmic activity, background Ca2+

Any surgical intervention that involves the manipulation of veins, large or small, carries the risk of acute venous congestion. Venous congestion is the product of an imbalance between arterial inflow and venous outflow, and results in the stasis of blood in the tissues that are normally drained by the affected veins. The resultant lack of tissue perfusion causes hypoxia, acidosis, and arterial thrombi formation, which can potentially progress to tissue necrosis and wet gangrene. In the past several decades, the use of leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) has been rediscovered as an effective method o

Therostasin is a potent naturally occurring tight-binding inhibitor of mammalian Factor Xa (K(i), 34 pm), isolated from the rhynchobdellid leech Theromyzon tessulatum. Therostasin is a cysteine-rich protein (8991 Da) consisting of 82 amino acid residues with 16 cysteine residues. Its amino acid sequence has been determined by a combination of techniques, including Edman degradation, enzymatic cleavage, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) on the native and s-beta-pyridylethylated compound. Sequence analysis reveals that it shares no si

1. The cutaneous receptive field of the medial pressure (mP) sensory neurone in the leech has been examined. The cell has one major receptive field and an anterior and a posterior minor receptive field, principally on lateral and dorsal skin. The two minor receptive fields are contiguous with the major receptive field and are innervated by fine anterior and posterior axons, but there is no overlap between major and minor receptive fields. 2. At low frequencies of stimulation of the minor receptive fields, conduction block takes place in the mP cell at the central branch point within the leech

An epidemic of severe ulcerations of the tongue and buccal cavity was documented in subadult and adult largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from Currituck Sound, North Carolina (USA). Other external clinical signs were not present. Between November 1986 and May 1987, reports from fishermen indicated that as many as 90% of large (greater than 300 mm total length) bass were affected. Older fish were the most commonly involved. The leech, Myzobdella lugubris (= Illinobdella moorei), was consistently present on or near the lesions. Lesions were heavily infected with several different bacteria t

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Leeches exhibit robust anticoagulant activity, making them useful for treating cardiovascular diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. Whitmania pigra, the primary source species of leech-derived medicinal compounds in China, has been demonstrated to possess formidable anticoagulant properties. Hirudin-like peptides, recognized as potent thrombin inhibitors, are prevalent in hematophagous leeches. Considering that W. pigra is a nonhematophagic leech, the following question arises: does a hirudin variant exist in this species?

Reports on non-invasive blood sampling are limited, and there are only a few studies on using kissing bugs (Reduviidae) and medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) for hematology and biochemistry testing in various zoo animal species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of non-invasive blood sampling with medicinal leeches for arbovirus epidemiological investigations in various animal species from one zoo collection. Medicinal leeches were manually applied on 35 animals of 11 species. Control blood samples were obtained by venipuncture of the jugular vein. Antibodies to tick-bo

Leech infestation of the upper airway is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition, especially among children living in rural areas with limited access to safe drinking water. Early recognition and intervention are crucial to prevent severe complications such as airway obstruction and profound anemia. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy from rural North Gondar, Ethiopia, who arrived at our facility with a 5-day history of coughing up blood, blood-stained saliva, hoarseness, throat discomfort, and progressive respiratory distress. On examination, he was acutely ill, severely a

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFASs) frequently detected in aquatic environments, where its accumulation in sediment-associated organisms raises increasing ecological concern. While PFOS toxicity has been extensively investigated in fish and other conventional model organisms, limited information is available regarding its bioaccumulation behavior and biochemical responses in freshwater benthic annelids. In this study, the medicinal leech Poecilobdella manillensis was used as a sediment-associated model organism to evaluate PFOS accumulati

Airway leech infestation is a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of severe hemoptysis, usually occurring after exposure to untreated freshwater in rural or endemic areas. Mechanical mucosal injury, together with the anticoagulant and antiplatelet effects of leech saliva, including hirudin and other bioactive substances, may contribute to persistent bleeding, while nonspecific symptoms can delay diagnosis. We report the case of a 56-year-old chronic smoker who was admitted with severe hemoptysis, dysphonia, and mild dyspnea after recent exposure to untreated freshwater. Computed tomogr

BACKGROUND: Leeches belong to a group of annelids of the class Hirudinea which are blood feeding ecto-parasites of humans, wild animals and domesticated animals. A leech can suck out as much blood as ten times its own weight. Leech can occur at different sites in humans commonly in the eyes, nasopharynx, larynx, urethra, and vagina and rarely in the rectum.
CASE DETAILS: This is a four years old male child who presented with painless, bright red rectal bleeding for two weeks. Heamatocrit was 9.2%. Leech was removed from the rectum by letting the child sit on a bucket of water. The patient was

This is the first report that describes histological and ultrastructural details of ovary organization in haemadipsid leeches. In Haemadipsa japonica, the female reproductive system is organized similar to that of other haemadipsids. Each of the paired and oval ovaries of H. japonica is comprised of the ovary wall (ovisac), which encloses two elongated, thread-like ovarian units termed ovary cords. Ovary cords are comprised of germ-line cells and associated somatic cells. Each cord is polarized and contains germ-line cells in the consecutive developmental stages that are sequentially located a

Medicinal leeches are commonly used after finger replantation to treat surgically unsalvageable venous congestion. Infection from Aeromonas hydrophila is a recognized complication of leech therapy that can be underestimated by the medical community. Ciprofloxacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole are the most commonly recommended prophylactic antibiotics used to prevent A. hydrophila infections during leech therapy. Here, we report 2 cases of ciprofloxacin-resistant Aeromonas infections, occurring within 4 months of each other. Both cases developed after leech therapy for unsuccessful digital
