Osteosarcoma is a form of bone cancer that can originate in any bone throughout the body, although it is most commonly detected in the long bones of the arms and legs. Chondroblastic osteosarcoma, a rare variation of osteosarcoma, is associated with a greater likelihood of recurrence and metastasis. The term "chondroblastic" indicates that certain portions of the tumor have undergone changes, resembling a connective tissue called cartilage. In this report, we present an exceptional case of osteosarcoma affecting the patella. A 54-year-old patient sought consultation at our outpatient clinic, r

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can clearly visualize both the ossification centers and surrounding cartilage of growing bones and enable a three-dimensional analysis of their positional relationships by using overlapping images. The calcaneal position was evaluated based on five newly proposed parameters of magnetic resonance images in 30 clubfeet of 18 infants with the bimalleolar and lower leg axes as reference lines. Sixteen unaffected feet in the unilateral cases were analyzed as normal feet. MRI showed that the calcaneus in clubfoot rotated internally, medially and posteriorly with refe

The procedure and the external fixator for lengthening long bones was developed by G.A. Ilizarov in the late 1960's. This technique has, despite its proven abilities for leg lengthening and correction of angular deformities, some considerable disadvantages for the patients. Discomfort, infections and restricted weight bearing are some reasons for the development of a completely intramedullary device for leg lengthening. The device developed at the Laboratory of Biomechanical Engineering, University of Twente, is a telescopic intramedullary nail with a maximum diameter of 13 mm, which can be le

A technique of autogenous grafting for repair of large defects in long bones is presented. Quadrangular grafts, taken from the external table of the posterior ilium, are modeled by bending them into cylindrical form, which has higher mechanical resistance as compared to flat struts. Cancellous chips are added. The original shape of the bone is immediately restored, and heavy internal fixation is avoided. combination of cortical and cancellous bone grafts provides both strength and rapid bone healing. There is no risk of fracture at the donor site. Of eight consecutive cases operated on, seven

The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of the quality of life in the treatment of fractures of the bones of the lower extremities of various localizations using transosseous and submerged osteosynthesis. We examined 397 patients with injuries of the lower segment of the lower extremity (patellar fractures - 81, multiple bones fractures of the tibia - 84 and fractures of the ankles, accompanied by a dislocation of the foot - 232). Patients were distributed in the subgroups depending on the treatment. The main group was performed using transosseous osteosynthesis, the comparison group -

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal osteoporosis leads to a significant decline in bone mass. That complicates the treatment outcome. The objective of the present study was to find out the effects of pulsed modulated low level electric field capacitively coupled on bone histology of induced osteoporotic rats, for screening the potential therapy for osteoporosis.
METHODS: Osteopororosis was induced by performed by bilateral ovariectomy of female Wistar rats. After one month of surgery electric field stimulation was delivered to one leg of experimatal rats while the other was sham exposed. A

Toxopachyosteosis, a rare bone disease, was described in 1954 by Weissmann-Netter and Stuhl. This congenital osteopathy, which may be familial, is defined by an anteroposterior curvature (toxon = arc) and thickening (pachus = thick) of the shafts of both leg bones. Other bones may be affected. Short stature and delayed walking are other important special features of the disease. It is most often diagnosed late and by chance because of the minimal functional consequences of the deformities. Sequelae of vitamin D-deficient rickets are the main differential diagnosis. The aim of this study undert

A young patient sustained a high-voltage burn with extensive destruction of the soft tissue in his left lower extremity. Occlusion of the anterior and posterior tibial arteries, loss of toe extensors and the superficial and deep peroneal nerves were noted, besides the exposure of the lower end of the tibia and metatarsal bones. In the absence of proper recipient vessels, a cross-leg free latissimus dorsi muscle flap with overlying skin and depending on the vessels of the contralateral foot was used successfully for reconstruction of the defect. The pedicle was divided 3 weeks after microvascul

The principal aim of this study was to describe the frequent errors that are being committed when treating congenital pseudarthroses of the lower leg. The authors studied this in 25 patients. 21 of these were referred to surgery, whereas 4 were presented by colleagues seeking counsel and were then subjected to further treatment at another location. One-half of the 21 congenital pseudarthroses had already been unsuccessfully operated on in other hospitals up to as often as four times. The method of "combined plate osteosynthesis" was employed with 19 of the 21 patients; this method was original

A seven toes foot is an extremely rare foot disorder. It may appear as part of a complex limb dysplasia or as an isolated deformity. We present five children with a seven toes foot. Supernumerary bones of the foot were found either as isolated duplicated great and little toe either affecting proximal bones, including the metatarsals or midtarsal bones, characterized as mirror foot. Radiological examination with X-rays was adequate for the evaluation of the affected foot. All patients had dysplasia isolated to the foot. Spine dysplasia was found in one child, and a hypoplastic unilateral little

Congenital constriction of the limbs is usually due to amniotic band syndrome, which often causes damage to the skin and soft tissues. We report an unusual case in which a neonate had recent fractures of both leg bones with an amniotic band encircling the limb. Non-operative treatment was successful. Challenges to the management of neonatal limb constriction include the absence of a consensus about the best treatment and the high frequency of damage to vessels and nerves.

Forensic anthropologists assess sex by analysing quantitative and qualitative characters of the human skeleton. In general, the pelvis and skull are the skeletal regions used most often, but in many cases, they are missing or fragmentary. In such circumstances, where only limb bones are present, it is necessary to use techniques based on other skeletal elements. Metric traits of the long bones of the lower extremities have been reported as reliable indicators of sex. This study was designed to determine whether the two main long bones of the leg, the femur and tibia, can be used for the assess

BACKGROUND: Fibular hemimelia has been reported as the most common congenital longitudinal deficiency of the long bones. Previous studies have focused on the best treatment options for this congenital condition. There is very little to our knowledge in the literature focused on residual persisting malformations and leg length discrepancy after treatment.
METHODS: Seven patients presenting fibular hemimelia in eight fibulae received treatment between years 1988 and 2001. Pre-treatment average leg length discrepancy was 5.3 cm. All patients presented associated congenital deformities of the ips

We report a unusual case of "fillet flap" to reconstruct the lower limb with the amputated contralateral leg. This kind of procedure was first described by Foucher et al. in 1980 for traumatic hand surgery as the "bank finger". A 34-year-old man suffered a microlight accident with bilateral open legs fractures. A large skin defect of the left leg exposed the ankle, the calcaneus and a non-vascularized part of the tibial nerve (10 cm). The patient came to the OR for surgical debridement and had massive bone resection of the left calcaneus. The right leg showed limited skin defect at the lower p

Two diabetic patients are described who showed widened and tortuous arteries, increased blood flow and increased filling of small arteries, with simultaneous filling of arteries and veins (increased flow through arterio-venous anastomoses). In one patient, during an observation period of four years, occlusion of both common iliacs developed, as well as a block of one femoral artery and mural changes in the other. Inthe second patient, areas of occlusion and hypervascularisation co-existed. The first patient showed osteolytic changes, also involving the joints, whereas the second patient develo

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess if there are structural and functional changes of hands and legs already in early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA), compared with the population-based control group. Additionally, we aimed to identify if the changes are symmetrical in hands and legs and if there are factors that are associated with these changes. The study was conducted, and, thus far, the results have been controversial. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of 83 consecutive patients with ERA and 321 control subjects. The association of finger clubbing and periostitis has been reported in primary biliary cirrhosis and, more rarely, in other forms of chronic liver disease. The prevalence of periostitis and its relationship to finger clubbing is unknown. In this prospective study, we have determined the prevalence of periostitis and finger clubbing in 74 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and 54 with other forms of chronic liver disease. Clubbing was present in 24% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, 29% with HBsAg negative chronic active hepatitis, and 23% in the group of miscellaneous liver dis

Multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE) are an autosomal dominant disorder, consisting of multiple cartilage capped bone tumour arising from the metaphysis of long tubular bones. Mutations are seen in Exostosin-1 and Exostosin-2 genes. We present a family of MHE for three generations. The index case was a 10-year-old male presented with multiple exostoses in hand, forearm, leg, right knee and chest. Family history revealed similar complaints in younger brother, father, paternal uncle, paternal aunt & her daughter and grandfather.

Mycetoma is a chronic disorder involving the skin, bones and soft tissues and is characterized by multiple discharge sinuses, nodules and swelling of the affected part. It may be caused by actinomycetes or eumycetes. It most commonly involves the foot but occasionally involve the hands, back or shoulders. We describe a 66-year-old male agricultural worker, hospitalized in Military Hospital of Craiova, for leg amputation caused by the disease evolution without response at treatment that was initiated 20 years ago.

A review of the literature was made with special interest in morphology, pathogenesis and treatment of hemophilic pseudotumors. 110 reports of hemophilic pseudotumors were evaluated and compared with 25 own cases. The separation according to the inflicted site and the primarily involved anatomical structure revealed three types of hemophilic pseudotumors: 1. Intramuscular hematomas which enter secondarily into the periosteum. a) In the diaphyses of long tubular bones (femur 49, lower leg 14, humerus 4, forearm 2). b) In the iliac bone (37). 2.
