Function analysis of CYP321A9 from Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) associated with emamectin benzoate, and a novel insecticide, cyproflanilide detoxification.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is an invasive agricultural pest that is a serious threat to agricultural production and global food security. Chemical control is the most effective method for preventing outbreaks of S. frugiperda. However, insecticide resistance often develops as a result of prolonged pesticide use, and the molecular mechanisms involved in insecticide resistance remain unclear. Insect cytochrome P450 monooxygenases play an important role in the detoxification of insecticides and insecticide resistance in Lepidoptera. In our study, the LC50 of a novel insecticide (cy

A novel cytochrome P450 CYP6AB14 gene in Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and its potential role in plant allelochemical detoxification.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) play a prominent role in the adaptation of insects to host plant chemical defenses. To investigate the potential role of P450s in adaptation of the lepidopteran pest Spodoptera litura to host plant allelochemicals, an expressed sequence data set derived from 6th instar midgut tissues was first mined. One sequence identified from the S. litura 6th instar midgut EST database was determined by phylogenetic analysis to belong to the CYP6AB P450 subfamily, and named CYP6AB14. Dietary supplementation of S. litura larvae with either xanthotoxin (XAN), coumarin (

High-pressure washing treatments to remove obscure mealybug (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) and lightbrown apple moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) from harvested apples.

Mixed life stages of obscure mealybug, Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret), and late 1st-instar or early 2nd-instar lightbrown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), on 'Royal Gala' apples (Malus domestica Borkhausen) were exposed to standard packhouse processing with and without addition of high-pressure apple washer treatments. Insect removal and mortality were assessed. After standard packhouse processing approximately 60% of P. viburni remained on their host apples. The 2 high-pressure apple washer treatments (500 and 800 psi at 2.0 rods/s) were equally effective and significantly reduced

Re-evaluation of recommended insecticides for resistance development, cross-resistance pattern, and underlying mechanisms in Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The rise of insecticide resistance threatens biodiversity and agricultural sustainability as insects develop mechanisms like enhanced detoxification to withstand toxic exposures. This study assessed resistance levels of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) populations from various regions of India to emamectin benzoate, indoxacarb, spinetoram, and lambda-cyhalothrin, and investigated the role of detoxification enzymes in resistance. Field populations showed variable susceptibility, with negligible resistance to emamectin benzoate, indoxacarb, and spinetoram. Among the tested H. armige

Flavin-Dependent Monooxgenase Confers Resistance to Chlorantraniliprole and Spinetoram in the Rice Stem Borer Chilo suppressalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Understanding the role of flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) in the genetic mechanisms of insecticide resistance is essential for developing effective management strategies against the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis. In this study, we identified five FMO genes in C. suppressalis, examined their expression patterns, and revealed overexpression of FMO3B and FMO3C in field populations resistant to multiple insecticides, including chlorantraniliprole and spinetoram. Functional characterization using transgenic Drosophila indicated that FMO3B and FMO3C do not confer resistance to abamecti

Intercropping Okra and Castor Bean Reduces Recruitment of Oriental Fruit Moth, Grapholita molesta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in a Pear Orchard.

Intercrops can lower pest densities by increasing plant diversity, altering chemical communication in the arthropod community, and integrating well with other IPM tactics. We used two years of field observations and Y-tube olfactometer assays to explore the effects of intercropping a pear orchard with okra and castor bean on the cosmopolitan fruit-boring pest Grapholita molesta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Intercropping okra reduced G. molesta trap catches in the pear orchard in both years, and intercropping with castor bean reduced them in the second year. Hydrocarbons, phenols, and ketones pr

The parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), influences food consumption and utilization by larval Diatraea saccharalis (F.) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Parasitoids exploit host insects for food and other resources; they alter host development and physiology to optimize conditions to favor parasitoid development. Parasitoids influence their hosts by injecting eggs, along with a variety of substances, including venoms, polydnaviruses, ovarian fluids, and other maternal factors, into hosts. These factors induce profound changes in hosts, such as behavior, metabolism, endocrine events, and immune defense. Because endoparasitoids develop and consume tissues from within their hosts, it is reasonable to suggest that internal parasitization would als

Characterization of plant growth-promoting traits of bacteria isolated from larval guts of diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (lepidoptera: plutellidae).

Eight bacterial isolates from the larval guts of Diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella) were tested for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits and effects on early plant growth. All of the strains tested positive for nitrogen fixation and indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid production but negative for hydrogen cyanide and pectinase production. In addition, five of the isolates exhibited significant levels of tricalcium phosphate and zinc oxide solubilization; six isolates were able to oxidize sulfur in growth media; and four isolates tested positive for chitinase and beta-1,3-glu

Impact of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) feeding on yield components in double-cropped soybean with determinate and indeterminate growth habits.

Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) injury to soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) may result in yield loss. To minimize loss, economic thresholds are used to make treatment decisions. However, many of these thresholds are based on studies using determinate soybean varieties, and it remains unclear whether indeterminate varieties have a greater capacity to compensate for H. zea herbivory compared to determinate ones. For this reason, we investigated whether soybean varieties with different growth habits vary in their ability to compensate for H. zea feeding injury in double-crop syst

Exposure to Cry1 Toxins Increases Long Flight Tendency in Susceptible but Not in Cry1F-Resistant Female Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The fall armyworm (JE Smith) (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a polyphagous pest targeted by selected Cry and Vip3A insecticidal proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) that are produced in transgenic Bt corn and cotton. Available evidence suggests that sublethal larval exposure to Cry1Ac increases flight activity in adult Spodoptera spp. However, it is not known whether this effect is also observed in survivors from generally lethal exposure to Cry1Ac. Moreover, while multiple cases of field-evolved resistance to Bt proteins have been described in the native range of S. frugiperda,

Tyrictaca hyalina (Kallies & Arita, 2001) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae: Tinthiini)-a description of pupa and the introduction into Europe on an infested Ficus microcarpa.

The clearwing moth, Tyrictaca hyalina (Kallies Arita, 2001) (Tinthiini, Sesiidae), was reared from cultivated Ficus microcarpa L.f. which were imported from China to Poland. Tyrictaca hyalina is native to southeast Asia and was probably reared before from the same imported Ficus plants in Germany and France. This article presents the first description of the pupal morphology of Tyrictaca. We compare the description of pupal morphology of T. hyalina to known morphological features of the pupae of other Tinthiini species. The morphological characters of adult and male genitalia are also presente

Survivorship of Z-Pheromone Race European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) on a Range of Host Plants Varying in Defensive Chemistry.

The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), was introduced in North America in the early 1900s and became a major pest of corn. After its introduction, it was found on > 200 other plant hosts, but corn remained its primary host. Early life history studies indicated that European corn borer had the potential of a wide host range. For nearly 80 yr before the introduction of Bt corn, the European corn borer was a major pest of corn in North America. This study investigated the growth and survivorship of the Z-pheromone race European corn borer on a range of hosts that vary in defensive

Transcriptional regulation of de novo biosynthesis of cyanogenic glucosides throughout the life-cycle of the burnet moth Zygaena filipendulae (Lepidoptera).

The six-spotted burnet moth Zygaena filipendulae (Lepidoptera) utilize the two cyanogenic glucosides (CNglcs) linamarin and lotaustralin as deterrents against predators throughout the entire life cycle. CNglcs can be hydrolyzed and bioactivated by β-glucosidases, resulting in the release of toxic hydrogen cyanide. CNglcs are retained through metamorphosis, probably involved in mating communication, and transferred during mating from the male to the female as a nuptial gift. CNglcs can be biosynthesized de novo by Z. filipendulae larvae, but may also be sequestered from their food plant Lotus c
