From political to personal violence: Links between conflict and non-partner physical violence in post-conflict Liberia.

War and interpersonal violence together account for a large burden on global health. Yet very few studies look at the relationship between these types of aggression. Non-partner physical violence (NPPV) is an often-understudied form of gender-based violence (GBV). This analysis draws on two datasets from one conflict-affected country, Liberia, to evaluate the impact of conflict on NPPV post-conflict. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED) measures the intensity of the conflict in Liberia from 1999-2003, while the Demographic and Heath Survey (DHS) data measure women's experience

Lesson learned from the investigation and response of Lassa fever outbreak, Margibi County, Liberia, 2018: case report.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever (LF) is a viral hemorrhagic disease caused by the Lassa virus (LASV) and endemic in West African countries with an estimation of 300,000 to 500,000 cases and 5,000 deaths annually. The Margibi County Health Team of Liberia received a report of an unidentified febrile illness case from the Kakata district. We conducted the investigation to identify the causative agent and the source of infection to support treatment, control and prevention interventions. CASE PRESENTATION: We identified LASV in the blood specimens' of two patients by Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Cha

Diurnal biting activity and transmission of Onchocerca volvulus (Filariata: Onchocercidae) by Simulium yahense (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Liberia.

To determine the influence of meterological factors on the diurnal biting cycle of Simulium yahense Vajime & Dunbar (a member of the Simulium damnosum Theoblad complex), we captured host-seeking females as they landed on the exposed lower legs of humans in the Harbel area of Liberia. Biting activity was greatest during the morning hours and was characterized by a unimodal harmonic curve. Although meteorological conditions had no decisive influence on the unimodal pattern of diurnal biting activity, hourly variation in the number of S. yahense captured at human bait was affected by meterologica

Trend of Lassa fever cases and factors associated with mortality in Liberia, 2016 - 2021: a secondary data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Lassa fever (LF) is endemic in Liberia and is immediately reportable. Suspected cases are confirmed at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory. However, there is limited information on the trend and factors associated with mortality. We described the epidemiological characteristics of LF cases and determined factors associated with mortality in Liberia from 2016 to 2021. METHODS: we reviewed 867 case-based LF surveillance data from 2016 to 2021 obtained from the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL). The cases that met the suspected LF case definition were

Overview of Rate and Risk Factors of Surgical Site Infection in a Tertiary Hospital in Liberia: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) is accountable for a third of postoperative deaths and for 8% of all deaths due to hospital-acquired infections. There is a wide disparity in the incidence and burden of SSI in low and high-income countries. OBJECTIVES: To assess the rates and risk factors of SSI in a tertiary hospital in a resource-limited sub-Saharan African country and generate institutional baseline data for future monitoring and interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive prospective cohort study done at John F Kennedy Memorial Hospital, a tertiary hospital in M

Documenting the development, adoption and pre-ebola implementation of Liberia's integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR) strategy.

BACKGROUND: In the immediate aftermath of a 14-year civil conflict that disrupted the health system, Liberia adopted the internationally recommended integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR) strategy in 2004. Despite this, Liberia was among the three West African countries ravaged by the worst Ebola epidemic in history from 2014 to 2016. This paper describes successes, failures, strengths, and weaknesses in the development, adoption, and implementation of IDSR following the civil war and up until the outbreak of Ebola, from 2004 to early 2014. METHODS: We reviewed 112 official Gover

Examining the Influence of Trauma Exposure on HIV Sexual Risk Between Men and Women in Post-Conflict Liberia.

The adverse impact of exposure to war-related traumatic events on mental health is well documented. Few studies, however, have focused on the impact of exposure to war-related traumatic events on HIV sexual risk behavior in post-conflict countries such as Liberia. We investigated whether exposure to war-related traumatic events was linked to HIV sexual risk behavior, and identified potential mediators of this relationship, including stressful life events, problematic alcohol use, and intimate partner violence (IPV) among women and men in Liberia. Data were collected from a sample of 395 partic

Establishment of a community care center for isolation and management of Ebola patients - Bomi County, Liberia, October 2014.

As of October 29, 2014, a total of 6,454 Ebola virus disease (Ebola) cases had been reported in Liberia by the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, with 2,609 deaths. Although the national strategy for combating the ongoing Ebola epidemic calls for construction of Ebola treatment units (ETUs) in all 15 counties of Liberia, only a limited number are operational, and most of these are within Montserrado County. ETUs are intended to improve medical care delivery to persons whose illnesses meet Ebola case definitions, while also allowing for the safe isolation of patients to break chain

Quantitative studies of onchocerciasis transmission by Simulium yahense and Simulium sanctipauli in the Firestone Rubber Plantation at Harbel, Liberia.

Black fly vectors of onchocerciasis from three ecologically different Simuliid breeding habitats in the Firestone Rubber Plantation at Harbel, Liberia, were surveyed by human-biting collections conducted at weekly intervals over a 13-month period. Black flies were identified morphologically and the monthly and seasonal contribution of different vector species to the transmission of Onchocerca volvulus at each site was determined. Simulium yahense was identified as the predominant vector species at each site. Greatest populations of this species occurred during wet season (May-Oct), but its imp

A case-control study in northern Liberia of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in haemoglobin S and beta-thalassaemia traits.

A case-control study was carried out on 558 patients with malaria attending a hospital in Yekepa, northern Liberia; 94 patients (16.8%) were aged at least ten years, probably because of a low level of protective immunity in town dwellers due to malaria control. The proportion of sickle cell traits (1.8%) among the patient group was lower than in the population (7.2%) served by the hospital (chi 2, 21.455, 1 df, P less than 0.001). A stratified analysis showed the relative risk for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in sickle cell trait over normal homozygotes, as 0.29 (upper 95%) confidence interva

Similar health emergencies, different commitments: Comparative strategies to end Ebola and COVID-19 in "post-conflict" Liberia.

Liberia, in the face of two consecutive health emergencies - the Ebola epidemic in 2014 and COVID in 2019 - offers a unique, comparative perspective on health crisis management within a fractured healthcare system. In dialogue with a feminist-informed political economy of health in the African context, this paper has two central objectives. First, it examines the strategies employed by community-based women's organisations - many of whom remain invested in peacebuilding after a 14-year civil war (1989-2003)) - to contain the Ebola and COVID-19 disease outbreaks. Second, it explores the impleme

The implementation of integrated disease surveillance and response in Liberia after Ebola virus disease outbreak 2015-2017.

INTRODUCTION: Although Liberia adapted the integrated diseases surveillance and response (IDSR) in 2004 as a platform for implementation of International Health Regulation (IHR (2005)), IDSR was not actively implemented until 2015. Some innovations and best practices were observed during the implementation of IDSR in Liberia after Ebola virus disease outbreak. This paper describes the different approaches used for implementation of IDSR in Liberia from 2015 to 2017. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using the findings from IDSR supervisions conducted from September to November 201

Risk communication during disease outbreak response in post-Ebola Liberia: experiences in Sinoe and Grand Kru counties.

INTRODUCTION: Lessons learned from the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak enabled Liberia to develop a health plan for strengthening public health capacity against potential public health threats. risk communication is one of the core pillars that provide life-saving information and knowledge for the public to take preventive and proactive actions against public health threats. These were applied in response to the post-ebola meningococcal septicemia and meningitis outbreaks in Sinoe and Grand Kru counties. This paper documents risk communication experiences in these post-ebola outbreaks in Li

Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum infection among pregnant women at first antenatal visit in post-Ebola Monrovia, Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of malaria control strategies during the West African 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic led to an increase in malaria-attributable mortality. However, recent data on malaria infection in vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, are lacking in this post-Ebola scenario. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum infection and of molecular markers of drug resistance among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Monrovia, capital of Liberia. METHODS: From October 2016 to June 2017, all pregnant women attending their first antenatal care v

Outbreak of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C outside the meningitis belt-Liberia, 2017: an epidemiological and laboratory investigation.

BACKGROUND: On April 25, 2017, a cluster of unexplained illnesses and deaths associated with a funeral was reported in Sinoe County, Liberia. Molecular testing identified Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C (NmC) in specimens from patients. We describe the epidemiological investigation of this cluster and metagenomic characterisation of the outbreak strain. METHODS: We collected epidemiological data from the field investigation and medical records review. Confirmed, probable, and suspected cases were defined on the basis of molecular testing and signs or symptoms of meningococcal disease. Meta

Psychological Distress among Ebola Survivors Discharged from an Ebola Treatment Unit in Monrovia, Liberia - A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: A consequence of the West Africa Ebola outbreak 2014-2015 was the unprecedented number of Ebola survivors discharged from the Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs). Liberia alone counted over 5,000 survivors. We undertook a qualitative study in Monrovia to better understand the mental distress experienced by survivors during hospitalization and reintegration into their community. METHODS: Purposively selected Ebola survivors from ELWA3, the largest ETU in Liberia, were invited to join focus group discussions. Verbal-informed consent was sought. Three focus groups with a total of 17 parti

Policy Options for Addressing Health System and Human Resources for Health Crisis in Liberia Post-Ebola Epidemic.

Qualified healthcare workers within an effective health system are critical in promoting and achieving greater health outcomes such as those espoused in the Millennium Development Goals. Liberia is currently struggling with the effects of a brutal 14-year long civil war that devastated health infrastructures and caused most qualified health workers to flee and settle in foreign countries. The current output of locally trained health workers is not adequate for the tasks at hand. The recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) exposed the failings of the Liberian healthcare system. There is limited eviden

Evidence for a decrease in transmission of Ebola virus--Lofa County, Liberia, June 8-November 1, 2014.

Lofa County has one of the highest cumulative incidences of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in Liberia. Recent situation reports from the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) have indicated a decrease in new cases of Ebola in Lofa County. In October 2014, the Liberian MoHSW requested the assistance of CDC to further characterize recent trends in Ebola in Lofa County. Data collected during June 8-November 1, 2014 from three sources were analyzed: 1) aggregate data for newly reported cases, 2) case-based data for persons admitted to the dedicated Ebola treatment unit (ETU) for the
