Cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Libyan Arab Republic: distribution of the disease and identity of the parasite.

The endemicity of cutaneous leishmaniasis in northwest Libya was confirmed. Although the strains isolated from man had variable biological properties they were all biochemically similar according to the tests used. The Libyan strains resemble those of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in parts of the Middle East, but can be differentiated from urban or highland strains. It is suggested that the recent discovery of the disease is due partly to the improvement in medical services, and partly to the development of new areas of land for agriculture and housing.

Projecting shifts in the distribution of Vachellia tortilis subsp. raddiana in Africa under climate change: a MaxEnt modeling and GIS analysis.

Vachellia tortilis (Forssk.) Hayne subsp. raddiana (Savi) Brenan, a drought-resistant tree native to arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Middle East, plays a crucial ecological and socioeconomic role by providing shade, forage, fuelwood, and contributing to soil stabilization and desertification control. To support scientific site selection for artificial planting and assess its current and potential distribution, we used the MaxEnt model combined with ArcGIS to evaluate climatic suitability across Africa based on occurrence records and environmental variables. After ten iterations, t

Louse-borne relapsing fever in a refugee from Mali.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the increasing number of refugees from East Africa, louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) has become an emergent disease in Europe. No single case of LBRF has been reported in Europe in refugees from other parts of Africa. CASE REPORT: We report a case of LBRF in a refugee from Mali, likely acquired in Libya, where several migration routes into Europe meet. The disease must be considered in any febrile refugee regardless the country of origin.

North American blastomycosis in Africans.

Two young adults, one a native of Libya and one a Sudanese from Saudi Arabia, were referred at different times to the chest service at Westminister Hospital in London with a diagnosis of tuberculosis. They both had neurological deficits due to vertebral lesions. In spite of the fact that neither patient had ever been to North America, diagnoses of North American blastomycosis were established; both patients made remarkable recoveries on amphotericin B therapy.

Investigating the prevalence of the G2019S mutation in Parkinson's disease among a Libyan population.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder influenced by both environmental and genetic risk factors. This study investigates the prevalence of the LRRK2 G2019S mutation in a Libyan population of 140 PD patients and 58 controls. Genetic analysis of blood samples revealed that 19.5% of PD patients carry the G2019S mutation, indicating a genetic association with the disease. The study highlights the G2019S mutation as a potential genetic risk factor for PD in Libya and emphasizes the importance of genetic screening for better understanding and management of the disease.

Genetic diversity of North African populations in the 17q21 genomic region.

The demographic history of human populations in North Africa has been characterized by complex migration processes that have determined the current genetic structure of these populations. We examined the autosomal markers of eight sampled populations in northern Africa (Tunisia and Libya) to explore their genetic structure and to place them in a global context. We genotyped a set of 30 autosomal single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) extending 9.5 Mb and encompassing the 17q21 inversion region. Our data include 403 individuals from Tunisia and Libya. To put our populations in the global contex

Isotope methods for management of shared aquifers in northern Africa.

Access to fresh water is one of the major issues of northern and sub-Saharan Africa. The majority of the fresh water used for drinking and irrigation is obtained from large ground water basins where there is minor contemporary recharge and the aquifers cross national borders. These aquifers include the Nubian Aquifer System shared by Chad, Egypt, Libya, and Sudan; the Iullemeden Aquifer System, extending over Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Benin, and Algeria; and the Northwest Sahara Aquifer System shared by Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia. These resources are subject to increased exploitation and may be s

Case series on telefono-type injuries in Mediterranean migrants.

This case series discusses three instances of telefono-type physical violence collected during a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) mission rescuing migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Libya. These cases demonstrate the various sequelae of ear-cuffing, including subjective hearing loss, tinnitus, ear pain, tympanic membrane rupture, and infection in this under-studied type of physical violence. The authors hope this case series further demonstrates the importance of awareness and recognition of subtle presentations of different types of torture.

Guillain-Barré syndrome in Arab countries: a systematic review.

Systematic review of the frequency and clinical pattern of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in Arab countries was initiated by a keyword search of PubMed, Medline and Embase and examination of references in all relevant papers. Seven articles were included from Iraq (n=1), Kuwait (n=1), Libya (n=2), and Saudi Arabia (n=3). The only incidence report from the Arab world, a 1987 study from Libya, gives an incidence of 1.7 per 100,000 person-years. Some studies reported that GBS was more common in males and in people in their twenties and thirties. Five studies showed that GBS occurred more frequentl

Ocular fireworks injuries in children.

Fourteen children and six adults presented in 1987 with firework-induced ocular injuries following celebrations of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday in Tripoli, Libya. The children's injuries were, typically, much more severe than those of the adults. Indigenous modifications to the fireworks, which are intended for children's use, render the devices into very dangerous missiles that, in the cases presented, resulted in the loss of one eye and serious damage to another. Educating children of the proper use of legal fireworks, and parents discouraging their children from modifying fireworks shoul

Spatio-Temporal Identification of Areas Suitable for West Nile Disease in the Mediterranean Basin and Central Europe.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-transmitted Flavivirus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex of the Flaviviridae family. Its spread in the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans poses a significant risk to human health and forces public health officials to constantly monitor the virus transmission to ensure prompt application of preventive measures. In this context, predictive tools indicating the areas and periods at major risk of WNV transmission are of paramount importance. Spatial analysis approaches, which use environmental and climatic variables to find suitable habit
