BACKGROUND: Although the vaccine research and development network in the United States remains vibrant, its continued success requires maintaining harmonious interaction among its many components. Changing one component is likely to affect the system overall. An examination of case studies of the development of selected vaccines would allow an examination of the network as a whole. This article presents conclusions drawn from the case study review undertaken.
OBJECTIVE: Successful development of vaccines is a time-intensive process requiring years of commitment from a network of scientists an

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to identify the optimal dose of an MF59-adjuvanted, monovalent, A/H1N1 influenza vaccine in healthy paediatric subjects.
METHODS: Subjects aged 3-8 years (n=194) and 9-17 years (n=160) were randomized to receive two primary doses of A/H1N1 vaccine containing either 3.75 μg antigen with half a standard dose of MF59 adjuvant, 7.5 μg antigen with a full dose of MF59, or (children 3-8 years only), a non-adjuvanted 15 μg formulation. A booster dose of MF59-adjuvanted seasonal influenza vaccine including homologous A/H1N1 strain was given one year after priming.

PROBLEM: To assess effects of the 1999 Maryland graduated driver licensing (GDL) law on both 16-year-old drivers and other road users.
METHOD: Calculation and comparison of crash involvement rates and non-fatal injury rates pre-GDL (1996-1998) and post-GDL (2001-2003) by type of road user, per population, and per licensed driver, with adjustment for trends among 30-59-year-old drivers.
RESULTS: Post-GDL, prevalence of licensure decreased 24% among 16-year-olds, and rates of 16-year-old drivers involved in crashes significantly decreased per 16-year-old population (corrected rate ratio (RRc)

CONTEXT: Clinical trials evaluate a vaccine's safety before approval, but some risks may escape detection or adequate characterization until larger population exposures occur after licensure.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize reports of events occurring after vaccination with 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), including those that may warrant further investigation to assess possible causation by PCV.
DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology of reports submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a national passive surveillance database.

INTRODUCTION: Impostor phenomenon (IP) is a psychological phenomenon in which successful individuals fail to internalize their achievements and fear being exposed as "incompetent." Medical students may be particularly vulnerable to IP because medical training combines repeated high-stakes assessment, competitive peer comparison, hierarchical clinical supervision, and rapid professional identity transition, potentially affecting psychological well-being and academic performance.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the global prevalence of IP in pre-licensure medical students and analyze differences by sex,

Dengue remains a significant global health challenge, with incidence rising and over half the world's population at risk. Vaccines could play an important role in controlling dengue, but without a validated correlate of protection (CoP), vaccine development relies on large, costly, and complex phase 3 field efficacy trials that are often underpowered for evaluating efficacy and safety by individual DENV serotypes in individuals who have never been infected with a dengue virus (i.e., DENV-naïve individuals). A validated CoP would help developers make informed decisions about the best vaccine ca

INTRODUCTION: Globally, the three main pathogens causing serious infections are Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis. Over the last 5 years, new vaccines protecting against these bacteria have been developed and introduced in various countries.
AREAS COVERED: This review describes the recently licensed glycoconjugates being used to protect against these encapsulated bacteria. Immunogenicity and safety data that led to licensure or licensure expansion of these glycoconjugates are discussed in addition to the resultant impact on the disease burden.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is estimated to have caused 319,000 cases of neonatal disease resulting in 90,000 infant deaths globally in 2015. It is also associated with maternal sepsis, preterm births, stillbirths and neonatal encephalopathy. There is a significant burden of neurologic impairment among survivors of infant GBS disease. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis strategies have reduced the incidence of newborn early-onset GBS (occurring days 0-6) in some settings, but they are not feasible in many low and middle-income countries. A maternal vaccine given to pregnant women to stimulate p

A growing body of knowledge supports the use of Elsevier's standardized HESI exams as an admission criterion to evaluate ongoing student performance and curricular outcomes and to measure students' preparedness for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Because a plethora of research indicates that the HESI Exit Exam (E(2)) is a valid predictor of NCLEX-RN success, faculty often designate a benchmark E(2) score that students are required to achieve. Students who do not achieve the faculty-designated benchmark score are required to remediate and retest with

Although the development and licensure of new vaccines over the last 2 years has generated a lot of excitement as well as debate, there is a lot more to come. Not discussed in this article. licensure of another long-awaited vaccine albeit for use in adults was that for herpes zoster. The second HPV and rotavirus vaccines are awaiting approval in the US. Next in line are the vaccines both prophylactic as well as therapeutic against HIV. Topics of debate over the new vaccines include discussions amongst practices as to the affordability and cost of the new vaccines as well as the ethical debate

Meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia are important causes of morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. More than 90% of the cases are caused by serogroups A, B and C; the remaining 10% are largely caused by the W-135 and Y strains. During the mid-to-late 1990s there was an increase in meningococcal serogroup (MS) C disease in the UK and some parts of Europe. MS C polysaccharide vaccines that were developed in the 1960s are weakly immunogenic and not protective in infants under 2 years of age, but are effective in older recipients. Meningitec (Wyeth-Ayerst) is produced by conjugat

BACKGROUND: Pharmaceutical access is essential for medical security systems to convert health protection commitments into actual treatment coverage. TRIPS compulsory licensing gives WTO members legal space to limit patent exclusivity under specific conditions, but legal authorization does not automatically become health policy mobilization. Existing research has not sufficiently tested the public health pressure and governance resource conditions under which compulsory licensing is mobilized in a WTO-corrected country-year risk set.
METHODS: Drawing on the Medicines Law & Policy TRIPS Flexibi

The GHPP BloodTrain team developed an e-learning concept in response to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, providing training formats with virtual stages that can be completed during the pandemic (and beyond) and on-site stages, where practical exercises and case reports in smaller groups can lead to a deeper understanding of the content. The virtual training workshop on "Authorisation and Licensing of Blood Establishments", hosted by the PEI GHPP BloodTrain from the 5th to the 8th of July 2021, was the first application of this concept. The number of participants could be substantially increas

Genetic counseling is defined by the American Society of Human Genetics as a communication process which deals with the human problems associated with the occurrence, or risk of occurrence, of a genetic disorder in a family. The first graduate program (Master's degree) in genetic counseling started in 1969 at Sarah Lawrence College, NY, USA, while in 1979 the National Society of Genetic Counseling (NSGC) was established. Today, there are 29 programs in U.S.A. offering a Master's degree in Genetic Counseling, five programs in Canada, one in Mexico, one in England and one in S. Africa. Most of t

PURPOSE: As part of the New York State law authorizing optometrists to use Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents (TPAs), the New York State Education Department commissioned a study to monitor and assess the prescribing patterns and competence of optometrists newly licensed to use TPAs. This report summarizes the findings of that study.
METHODS: The database was obtained from more than 11,000 Patient Data Reporting Forms (PDRFs) returned by 535 optometrists, listing diagnosis, type(s) of medication(s) prescribed, treatment outcome, and possible adverse effects.
RESULTS: Of the more than 11,000 f
