Association between personality traits and mental health outcomes in older adults with lifetime trauma exposure: a nationwide community sample.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the impacts of earlier traumatic events on the mental health of older adults, in terms of mental disorders and mental well-being, according to sociodemographic variables, trauma-related characteristics, and personality traits in a nationally representative sample of older Koreans. METHODS: A total of 1,621 subjects aged 60 to 74 years from a Korean national epidemiological survey of mental disorders responded face-to-face interviews. The Korean Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to investigate lifetime trauma exposure (LTE) and psychiatric d

Larval crowding enhances dengue virus loads in Aedes aegypti, a relationship that might increase transmission in urban environments.

BACKGROUND: Climate change and urbanization will alter the global distribution of disease vectors, changing the disease burden in yet unpredictable ways. Aedes aegypti is a mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses that breeds in containers associated with urban environments. We sought to understand how ambient temperature and larval densities in the immature aquatic phases determine adult life history traits and dengue virus loads post-infection. We predicted that larval crowding and high temperatures would both lead to smaller mosquitoes that m

Age influences the thermal suitability of Plasmodium falciparum transmission in the Asian malaria vector Anopheles stephensi.

Models predicting disease transmission are vital tools for long-term planning of malaria reduction efforts, particularly for mitigating impacts of climate change. We compared temperature-dependent malaria transmission models when mosquito life-history traits were estimated from a truncated portion of the lifespan (a common practice) versus traits measured across the full lifespan. We conducted an experiment on adult female Anopheles stephensi, the Asian urban malaria mosquito, to generate daily per capita values for mortality, egg production and biting rate at six constant temperatures. Both t

The vector ecology of introduced Culex quinquefasciatus populations, and implications for future risk of West Nile virus emergence in the Galápagos archipelago.

Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae), an important vector of West Nile virus (WNV) in the U.S.A., was first detected on the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador) in the 1980s. However, little is known of its ecology, distribution or capacity for arbovirus transmission in the Galápagos. We characterize details of lifecycle (including gonotrophic period), temporal abundance, spatial distribution, vector competence and host-feeding behaviour. Culex quinquefasciatus was detected on five islands of the Galápagos during 2006-2011. A period of 7-14 days was required for egg-adult emergence; water sa

Microevolutionary response of a gut nematode to intestinal inflammation.

Parasitic helminths interfere with the immune response of their hosts to establish long-lasting, chronic infections. While favorable to the parasite, the capacity to dampen the immune response can also provide a benefit to the host in terms of reduced risk of immune disorders and immunopathology. The immunomodulatory role of nematodes has been exploited in clinical trials to treat a number of inflammatory and immune diseases. However, how parasites adapt to an inflammatory environment remains a poorly explored question. Here, we conducted a serial passage experiment where the gut nematode Heli

Carneiro's global dataset of cultural traits in ethnographic and historical societies: a digital edition.

The late Robert L. Carneiro was a prominent anthropologist who devoted his life to the study of political evolution and the evolution of complex societies. In the 1960s and 1970s, he and his colleagues created a cross-cultural dataset for their Scale Analysis project, collecting ethnographic and historical data on hundreds of cultural traits in more than a hundred societies worldwide. Although Carneiro presented the results of the project in several papers, the dataset itself has not yet been published. Here we present a digital version of two editions of the dataset, based on Carneiro's docum

Multidimensional Trait Space of Soil Protists: Ecological Strategies and Environmental Responses.

Soil protists comprise vast eukaryotic diversity and play key roles in microbial food webs, yet their community assembly remains poorly understood from a trait-based perspective. Here, we address this gap by integrating 10 traits related to morphology, behaviour, life history and trophic strategy across broad environmental gradients. RLQ analysis combined with fourth-corner tests revealed two major dimensions of soil protist trait variation. Reduced precipitation drove trait composition towards slower, persistence-oriented strategies, including reduced mobility, narrower niche breadth and incr

Live Fast, Die Old: Lowering Insulin Signalling During Development Can Speed Growth, Increase Reproduction and Lifespan, but Impair Environmental Sensing and Harm Offspring in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Genetic trade-offs can constrain life-history evolution resulting in the evolution of ageing. Reduced insulin/insulin-like signalling (rIIS) improves somatic maintenance and dramatically increases lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans, but the effects on fitness are unclear. Here we used a novel experimental approach to show that, contrary to the prevailing paradigm, rIIS via daf-2 RNAi during development can improve development, reproduction, survival, individual fitness, and population growth rate in the laboratory and semi-natural conditions. However, developmental rIIS extends lifespan and im

Perceived lack of training moderates relationship between healthcare providers' personality and sense of efficacy in trauma-informed care.

Background and Objectives: Medical patients often have trauma histories that are not routinely assessed, which can adversely affect health outcomes. Despite growing awareness of this issue, there is limited understanding of factors that influence provider competency in trauma-informed care (TIC). The study examined healthcare providers' personality traits in relation to their sense of TIC efficacy, taking into account perceived barriers to TIC and professional quality of life. Study Design: The study used cross-sectional survey methods to examine our central hypothesis that provider personalit

Transmission dynamics of two strains of Schistosoma mansoni utilizing novel intermediate and definitive hosts.

The intimate host-parasite relationship mandates adaptation to the genetic and phenotypic variability of their counterparts. Here, inbred and outcrossed strains of Schistosoma mansoni were challenged with "Локально" and "novel" intermediate and definitive hosts to examine effects of genetic variability and novelty on infection success and dynamics. Genetically distinct lines of Biomphalaria glabrata intermediate hosts exposed to inbred and outcrossed S. mansoni larvae were assessed for differences in both snail and parasite life-history parameters. Sub-lethal effects of spinetoram application interacts with temperature in complex ways to influence respiratory metabolism, life history and macronutrient composition in false codling moth (Thaumatotibia leucotreta).

In many pests, insecticide efficacy is dependent on environmental conditions, including ambient temperature. However, it remains unknown if thermal history alters sub-lethal effects to potentially enhance or reduce pesticide resistance in the false codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta. Here, using FCM, a pest of economic importance in South Africa infesting several commercial food crops, we report results of sub-lethal exposure to spinetoram, an insecticide that disrupts the nervous system. We investigate whether insecticide efficacy is temperature dependent or perhaps interacts with t

The dark side of organic farming: Copper sulphate compromises the life history and behaviour of the walking stick insect, Bacillus rossius.

Organic farming is considered the most sustainable form of modern soil cultivation. Yet it often relies on the use of chemical compounds that are not necessarily harmless for the surrounding wildlife. In this study, we tested the effects of realistic concentrations of copper sulphate-largely used in organic farming as a fungicide-on ecologically-relevant traits of the walking stick insect Bacillus rossius, a species commonly found in the proximity of cultivated fields across Europe. By using second-generation progeny of wild-caught parthenogenetic females bred in common gardens, we measured th

Effect of personality traits, psychological resilience and life adversities on lifetime violence trajectories: A novel classification model in schizophrenia.

The risk of violence is higher in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) compared to the general population and it is a pressing and understudied issue. Several dispositional and environmental factors have been previously correlated with violence, however, there has been little success in assessing their ability to predict violence patterns across the life span. This study aims to assess violence prediction based on personality traits, psychological resilience, and life-course adversities in a non-forensic population of SSD patients. In a sample of 231 patients with SSD, we assessed violence u

Diet influences resource allocation in chemical defence but not melanin synthesis in an aposematic moth.

For animals that synthesise their chemical compounds de novo, resources, particularly proteins, can influence investment in chemical defences and nitrogen-based wing colouration such as melanin. Competing for the same resources often leads to trade-offs in resource allocation. We manipulated protein availability in the larval diet of the wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, to test how early life resource availability influences relevant life history traits, melanin production and chemical defences. We expected higher dietary protein to result in more effective chemical defences in adult moths

Heterogeneous constraint and adaptation across the malaria parasite life cycle.

Evolutionary forces vary across genomes, creating disparities in how traits evolve. In organisms with complex life cycles, it is unclear how intrinsic differences among discrete life stages impact evolution. Here, we look for life history-driven patterns of adaptation in Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria-causing parasite with a multi-stage life cycle. We posit that notable differences across the P. falciparum life cycle-including cell ploidy, the extent of clonal competition and the presence of transmission bottlenecks-alter the drift-selection balance acting at discrete life stages. Trade-offs in avian parental care: a review of theory and meta-analysis of brood size manipulations.

The selective forces shaping parental care have been studied for over 50 years. While theoretical and experimental work has yielded qualitative progress, the large body of empirical work testing predictions about parental investment based on life-history trade-offs has yet to be synthesized. We first provide an overview of the core life-history theory exploring how selection might shape parental care. We then conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on studies that experimentally manipulated brood size in birds, a widely used experimental approach to manipulate parental investment. We ext

Genome size estimation and evolution trends in Acari.

Acari, including mites and ticks, pose significant challenges in agriculture, horticulture, and medicine. Among these, agricultural concerns are particularly critical, as many mite species directly affect crop health and productivity. The genome sizes of Acari vary widely, reflecting their diverse ecological roles and life history traits. This variation often corresponds to differences in reproductive strategies, parasitic behaviors, and adaptation to specific environments. Here, to better understand evolution trends in Acari, we (1) estimated the genome size of six mite species using flow cyt
