Ultrastructure and innervation of thumb carpometacarpal ligaments in surgical patients with osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: The complex configuration of the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC-1) joint relies on musculotendinous and ligamentous support for precise circumduction. Ligament innervation contributes to joint stability and proprioception. Evidence suggests abnormal ligament innervation is associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in large joints; however, little is known about CMC-1 ligament innervation characteristics in patients with OA. We studied the dorsal radial ligament (DRL) and the anterior oblique ligament (AOL), ligaments with a reported divergent presence of mechanoreceptors in nonosteoarthritic

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal and yellow ligaments on the lumbar spine.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament and ossification of the yellow ligament are the main causes of spinal canal stenosis. This article describes a case of ossification of the posterior longitudinal and yellow ligaments on the lumbar spine. The patient presented with gradually worsening left lower-extremity ache and pain. The deep tendon reflex was hyperreflexia in the lower extremities. Disturbances existed in the blade and bowel. The ossified lesion of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament was observed at L5-S1, and plain lateral radiographs and computed tomograp

Anatomy of the collateral ligaments of the feline elbow joint: functional implications.

Cats show a higher capability to supinate their forearms than dogs. This suggests a special arrangement of the collateral ligaments of the feline elbow joint. Therefore, the course of the ligaments was examined in 13 adult cats. The size of the ligaments was measured, and effects of passive joint movements were studied. Ligaments of five additional cats were examined histologically. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) had a superficial and deep part, both originating from the humerus. The free humeral portion of the LCL was short and contained fibrous cartilage. Fibre bundles of the deep par

Biomechanics of the membranous flexor tendon sheath: the role of Grayson's ligaments.

BACKGROUND: The biomechanical integrity of the tendon sheath of the fingers has a significant effect on the success of flexor tendon surgery. As nonweightbearing elements, the membranous parts of the sheath have received little attention, and their contribution to sheath movement is still obscure. The authors presumed that Grayson's ligaments, which have been described as force-transmitting elements, might play a role in the biomechanics of the membranous flexor tendon sheath. METHODS: Twenty-two long fingers of cadaver hands were examined. The authors studied the movements of the inner aspec

Biomechanics of the PCL and related structures: posterolateral, posteromedial and meniscofemoral ligaments.

This paper reviews and updates our knowledge of the anatomy and biomechanics of the posterior cruciate ligament, and of the posterolateral, posteromedial and meniscofemoral ligaments of the knee. The posterior cruciate ligament is shown to have two functional fibre bundles that are tight at different angles of knee flexion. It is the primary restraint to tibial posterior draw at all angles of knee flexion apart from near full extension. In contrast, the posterolateral and posteromedial structures are shown to tighten as the knee extends, and to be well-aligned to resist tibial posterior draw.

The association of absent suspensory ligaments of the liver and Marfan syndrome.

Gastrointestinal manifestations of collagen diseases are very rare. The authors report on a patient who has features of Marfan syndrome with mobile liver caused by the absence of its suspensory ligaments. This patient presented with an acute intestinal obstruction secondary to a congenital band across the distal transverse colon. Recurrent intestinal obstruction after resection of the band necessitated the performance of partial colectomy with ileotransverse anastomosis. The patient's phenotypic features are suggestive but not diagnostic of Marfan syndrome. Nevertheless, isolated skeletal mani

Extrinsic radiocarpal ligaments: magnetic resonance imaging of normal wrists and scapholunate dissociation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] in planes of imaging parallel to the known course of the extrinsic radiocarpal ligaments of the wrist aids in the visualization of these structures. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: MRI was performed on 32 wrists: a single normal cadaveric wrist, 23 normal wrists in volunteers and 8 wrists in patients with known scapholunate dissociation and rotatory scaphoid subluxation. Proton-density and T2-weighted images were obtained in the sagittal plane and gradient recalled echo images in an oblique sagittal plane, selected to parallel the extrins

[The functional significance of the suspending ligaments of the ear ossicle chain].

The contraction of the tensor tympani muscle has not enough force to stabilise the drum membrane-malleus complex against a negative pressure in the external ear nor against a hyperpressure in the middle-ear, as in sneezing, Valsalva's manoeuvre, etc. The ossicular ligaments must therefore perform this task. It was shown in experiments with fresh temporal bone preparations that the superior malleolar ligament diminishes the pressure-induced displacements of the malleus. This proves that this often neglected ligament has true functional significance. The most important ligament, which retains th

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments: a cause of spinal stenosis syndrome.

Spinal Stenosis Syndrome (SSS) causes varying radiculopathies and myelopathies by compressing the spinal cord, rootlets and nerves within the bony canal. An enlarged and ossified posterior longitudinal ligament, a rare cause of the syndrome, can occupy up to 80% of the cervical spinal canal resulting in severe, sometimes permanent myelopathy. The clinical and the radiographic findings are discussed.

Biomechanical assessment of ligament maturation after arthroscopic ligament reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament.

BACKGROUND: Many techniques have been described for lateral ankle ligament reconstruction. Although the biomechanical properties of gracilis tendons are different from those of ligaments, the use of a gracilis tendon autograft is a popular option for anatomical reconstruction. Graft maturation and the biomechanical processes over time remain unclear. This study describes changes in graft stiffness following anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) reconstruction and graft reaction to varus stress. HYPOTHESIS: The reconstruction would be stiffer than the native ATFL, but would decrease during foll

Treatment of isolated injuries of the lunotriquetral ligament. A comparison of arthrodesis, ligament reconstruction and ligament repair.

We studied 57 patients with isolated lunotriquetral injuries treated by arthrodesis, direct ligament repair, or ligament reconstruction. The outcomes were compared by using written questionnaires, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, range of movement, strength, morbidity and rates of reoperation. Isolated lunotriquetral injury was confirmed by arthroscopy or arthrotomy. The mean age of the patients was 30.7 years (15.4 to 53.7) and the injuries were subacute or chronic in 98.2%. Eight patients underwent lunotriquetral reconstruction using a distally-based strip of the

Functional Anatomy and Clinical Significance of the Lateral Ankle Ligaments: A Cadaveric Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tears in the lateral ankle ligaments are among the most common injuries in both athletes and the general population. The ligaments involved in the lateral ankle complex include the anterior tibiofibular ligament (ATFL), calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and posterior tibiofibular ligament (PTFL). Information on the anatomy and variation of these structures is currently limited. This study aims to provide detailed documentation of the anatomy and morphometry of the lateral ankle ligament complex (LALC). METHODS: This study involved 22 cadaveric ankles. Ankles with pre- or post-mort

Anatomical analysis of ligaments surrounding calcaneocuboid joint; implications for role in foot stability.

PURPOSE: The calcaneocuboid joint is located in the lateral part of the foot and acts as a major stabilizer for the foot. Injuries to this joint often occur in association with ankle or foot injuries and are frequently overlooked, subsequently causing chronic pain or osteoarthritis. However, the relationship between ligaments surrounding the joint and joint instability remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the morphology and position of the ligaments surrounding the calcaneocuboid joint, and to reveal the relationship between the ligament structure. METHODS: The position and

Automatic detection of attachment sites for knee ligaments and tendons on CT images.

PURPOSE: The diseases and injuries of the knee joint are the most common orthopedic disorders. Personalized knee models can be helpful in the process of early intervention and lasting treatment techniques development. Fully automatic reconstruction of knee joint anatomical structures from medical images (CT, MRI, ultrasound) remains a challenge. For this reason, most of state-of-the-art knee joint models contain simplifications such as representation of muscles and ligaments as line segments connecting two points which replace attachment areas. The paper presents algorithms for automatic detec

Rupture Site Location of Surgically Treated Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Ulnar and Radial Collateral Ligaments.

PURPOSE: Thumb metacarpophalangeal collateral ligament injuries occur in 50 per 100,000 people. The most frequent rupture site locations that are often cited are the thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) occurring distally from the proximal phalanx and the radial collateral ligament (RCL) occurring proximally from the metacarpal head.2,16 In this study, we report the frequency of the rupture site location of both thumb UCL and RCL injuries. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1,004 consecutive finger collateral ligament surgeries performed at a single academic institution over 17 years was c

PDLSCs Regulate Angiogenesis of Periodontal Ligaments via VEGF Transferred by Exosomes in Periodontitis.

Abnormal angiogenesis is one of the significant features in periodontitis leading to progressive inflammation, but angiogenic changes of periodontal ligaments under inflammatory condition were rarely reported. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) were a kind of dental stem cells associated with vascularization. Here we investigated the alteration of angiogenesis of periodontal ligament in periodontitis, and revealed an exosome-mediated pathway to support the effect of PDLSCs on angiogenic improvement. Vascular specific marker CD31 and VEGFA were found to be highly expressed in periodontal
