This report describes a case of traumatic corneal rupture 22 months after radial keratotomy in a 39-year-old woman. The patient struck her face on the side of her car resulting in a limbus rupture in her cornea through the horizontal incisions of a four-incision radial keratotomy. An orbital blowout fracture was also present. A sclerotomy was performed to drain persistent choroidal detachment. After the hemorrhage in the anterior chamber resolved, the iris and lens were found to be absent. Visual acuity of 20/40 was achieved with aphakic correction.

The purpose was to assess the profile of subconjunctival oblique limbus incision (SCOLI) design by using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and try to emphasize the proper technique of wound construction. The structural dimensions and integrity of the wound were acquired from the patients, who had undergone manual small-incision cataract surgery with SCOLI techniques, using a Canon OCT anterior-segment imaging system on the first postoperative day. The use of AS-OCT allowed for an in vivo evaluation of SCOLI in high definition. The radial OCT scan image showed three stagger

The cornea requires constant epithelial renewal to maintain clarity for appropriate vision. A subset of stem cells residing at the limbus is primarily responsible for maintaining corneal epithelium homeostasis. Trauma and disease may lead to stem cell deficiency and therapeutic targeting to replenish the stemness capacity has been stalled by the lack of reliable corneal epithelial stem cell markers. Here we identified the location of Lhx2 in mice (mLhx2) cornea and conjunctival tissue using an Lhx2eGFP reporter model and in human tissues (hLHX2). Lhx2 localized to the basal cells of central co

Sulfur mustard (SM) exposure induces ocular injury primarily to the cornea, limbus, and sclera. Although corneal injuries have been studied in detail, there is a dearth of literature on the effects of SM on limbus, particularly mechanisms underlying its compromised functioning, causing limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). LSCD causes impaired corneal repair leading to persistent epithelial defects, mustard gas keratopathy, and prolonged inflammation, resulting in total blindness in case of severe damage. Notably, dexamethasone (Dex) has been reported to treat SM-induced corneal injuries effecti

The aim of the study was to immunolocalise interstitial collagenase (MMP-1) and the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1) in ulcerating corneas from patients with rheumatoid arthritis, to determine whether changes in expression are associated with destructive corneal disease. Collagenase was expressed by stromal cells in 8 of 8 ulcerating corneas but was not seen in normal tissue (n = 3). TIMP-1 was abundant throughout the normal stroma, but was much reduced or absent from diseased corneas. Collagenase staining was frequently more intense near the epithelial surface and associated wi

The rabbit corneal angiogenesis assay was modified to allow quantification of the neovascular response induced by growth factors. Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) was used for this experiment. bFGF was diluted in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) in such a way that 2 microliter of solution contained concentrations ranging from 17 to 1,200 ng. Each drop was absorbed by a 1 x 2 mm particle of a dried 70% hydratable hydrogel and implanted into a mid-stroma corneal pocket, 2 mm from the limbus. Iodinated bFGF was used to measure growth factor diffusion in the cornea, which was found to be isotr

The limbus is a narrow tissue intersection between the cornea and conjunctiva which is purported to harbor stem cells (SCs) that replenish the corneal epithelium throughout life. Damage to these cells can result in debilitating visual consequences. To date, various immunohistochemical methods have been employed to investigate limbal morphology and identify SC location to improve their isolation for therapeutic use. However, none of these methods preserve tissue integrity and orientation, nor do they incorporate adjacent conjunctiva as a contiguous ocular surface for analyses. In this chapter,

An innovative intraocular lens (IOL), the CM-T Flex IOL, was used to correct surgical aphakia without disturbing a functioning filtering bleb. A 66-year-old man presented with aphakia in the left eye. Cataract extraction and trabeculectomy was performed in the left eye 2 years previously elsewhere. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in the left eye was 6/18, and, on examination, it showed a filtering bleb that encroached on the limbus and superior cornea. The cornea was clear with a deep anterior chamber. Retinal examination was normal. Disc cupping was noted with a cup-to-disc ratio of 0

PURPOSE: The study of angiogenesis depends on reliable and reproducible models for the stimulation of a neovascular response. The purpose of this research was to develop such a model of angiogenesis in the mouse cornea.
METHODS: Uniformly sized Hydron pellets containing either basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and sucralfate were prepared and implanted into the stroma mouse cornea adjacent to the temporal limbus.
RESULTS: Neovascularization of the corneal stroma began on day 3 and was sustained through day 8. The bFGF-induced neovascularizatio

The relationship between enhanced cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to staphylococcal antigens, expressed as delayed hypersensitivity (DH), and the development of catarrhal infiltrates at the limbus in the rabbit has been explored by others. This DH is required for infiltrates to develop in the rabbit cornea when it is exposed to conjunctival inoculation with live Staphylococcus aureus cells. Similar investigations have not been pursued in the human, although St. aureus has been isolated from lids of patients with sterile marginal ulcers. We have tested 69 patients with blepharitis, eleven with and

BACKGROUND: Transplantology is a quickly developing field of ophthalmology. It currently is able to treat many inherited, degenerative, inflammatory, traumatic, and cancerous diseases. This review outlines recent concepts and methods of treating ocular diseases with tissue and cell grafts. Ocular transplants related to the anterior part of the eye, including the conjunctiva and the cornea, are reviewed in Part 1.
MATERIAL/METHODS: The scientific literature dated from January 2005 to July 2011 was thoroughly searched using Medline and PubMed. Publications dated 2009, 2010, and 2011 were analyz

We present a finite element model of the human cornea used to simulate corneal refractive surgery according to the three most diffused laser procedures, i. e., photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK), laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). The geometry used for the model is patient-specific in terms of anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea and intrastromal surfaces originated by the planned intervention. The customization of the solid model prior to finite element discretization avoids the struggling difficulties associated with the geometrical

The ocular surface, which forms the interface between the eye and the external environment, includes the cornea, corneoscleral limbus, the conjunctiva and the accessory glands that produce the tear film. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans (PGs) have been shown to play important roles in the development, hemostasis and pathology of the ocular surface. Herein we review the current literature related to the distribution and function of GAGs and PGs within the ocular surface, with focus on the cornea. The unique organization of ECM components within the cornea is essential for the mainten

Experiments were performed with a model of focal, thermal-induced ulceration to test the clinical impression that vascularization prevents ulceration of the corneal stroma. Slow-release polymers containing a vasoproliferase agent (tumor angiogenesis factor) were placed in corneal pockets 2 mm central to the limbus of albino rabbits. These polymers elicited blood vessel ingrowth up to the implant. Control eyes received empty polymers which caused minimal to no vessel growth. Polymers were removed, and each cornea received a focal, thermal burn placed just central to the polymer site. All contro

INTRODUCTION: The Spiral of Tillaux describes the historically accepted insertion distances of the medial rectus, inferior rectus, lateral rectus, and superior rectus from the limbus: 5.5 mm, 6.5 mm, 6.9 mm, and 7.7 mm, respectively. The corneal diameters are historically accepted to be 11.7 mm horizontally and 10.6 mm vertically in adults. We investigated the variability of the insertion distances of the extraocular rectus muscles from the limbus as well as the corneal diameters using eyes from human cadavers and compared our measurements to these historically accepted measurements.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case series of idiopathic lipoidal corneal degeneration in falcons.
ANIMALS STUDIED: Five falcons including three peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), one prairie falcon (Falco mexicanus), and one red-naped shaheen (Falco peregrinus babylonicus) were observed to develop slowly progressive corneal opacification that began at the temporal limbus and extended centripetally across the cornea over a period of years. Four of the birds were over 20 years old.
PROCEDURES: All animals underwent complete ophthalmic examinations. A red-naped shaheen underwent ocular imaging via

The cornea is our window to the world and our vision is critically dependent on corneal clarity and integrity. Its epithelium represents one of the most rapidly regenerating mammalian tissues, undergoing full-turnover over the course of approximately 1-2 weeks. This robust and efficient regenerative capacity is dependent on the function of stem cells residing in the limbus, a structure marking the border between the cornea and the conjunctiva. Limbal stem cells (LSC) represent a quiescent cell population with proliferative capacity residing in the basal epithelial layer of the limbus within a

Biological effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) are mediated through receptors known as nerve growth factor receptors (NGFR), which include p75 and TrkA. This study was initiated after identifying NGFR as an up-regulated gene in the limbus by cDNA microarray analysis and we postulate that its expression may be indicative of a stem/progenitor cell phenotype. Immunohistochemistry was performed on normal human adult (n=5) and foetal (n=3) corneal tissue using antibodies directed against p75, TrkA, NGF, p63, ABCG2 and CK3/12. Limbal, conjunctival and pterygium tissue was obtained from patients (n=

BACKGROUND: Complications of refractive corneal procedures are a consequence of inevitable corneal deformation or thinning. We aim to reduce corneal refractive power but omit laceration on the cornea itself.
METHODS: 1. Rabbits: The procedure war first studied in 16 chinchilla rabbits (32 eyes). Seven eyes were enucleated in different intervals for microscopic evaluation. In rabbits the corneal diameter increased and refractive power of the cornea was diminished by 3.0 to 6.0 diopters. Refraction was controlled after 1, 2, 6 and 12 months. 2.
