Leishmaniasis in travelers: a literature review.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne protozoan infection whose clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic infection to fatal visceral leishmaniasis. Over the last decades, an increase in imported leishmaniasis cases in developed, non-endemic countries, have been pointed-out from a review of the international literature. Among the possible causes are increasing international tourism, influx of immigrants from endemic regions and military operations. The main area for the acquisition of cutaneous leishmaniasis, especially for adventure travelers on long-term trips in highly-endemic forested areas, is

[Poliomyelitis in literature, cinema and television].

INTRODUCTION: Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease whose initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headaches, vomiting, a stiff neck and pains in the limbs. In many cases, the sequelae are irreversible paralysis and may result in death if there is bulbar or respiratory compromise. A set of symptoms, called post-polio syndrome, which appears years after the acute infection, are also described. AIM: To analyse the way poliomyelitis has been dealt with in literature, cinema and television. DEVELOPMENT: Film and television writers and directors have shown an interest in poliomyelitis and have portr

Ventricular diverticulum: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular diverticulum (VD) is a rare cardiac malformation. The surgical indications for VD remain controversial. This review is designed to determine the demographic characteristics, diagnosis, and surgical indications of this disease. METHODS: Using PubMed and the Chinese electronic databases CNKI, WANFANG, and VIP, a computerized search was performed of the literature from China published between March 1965 and July 2012. Major risk factors for developing VD complications were confirmed by logistic regression analysis in case-control studies. RESULTS: Ninety-three articles a

Chloroquine cardiomyopathy - a review of the literature.

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are still used for the prevention and treatment of malaria. Moreover, they are experiencing a renaissance in the long-term therapy of connective tissue diseases (particularly in systemic lupus erythematosus). They induce a lysosomal dysfunction with an accumulation of pathologic metabolic products, which can be seen in ultrastructural histology as pathognomonic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Due to its lower toxicity, hydroxychloroquine is the form used predominantly today. Retinopathy as a toxic result of this medication is well known. Cardiac side effects ar

Moyamoya disease: a review of the literature.

Moyamoya disease is a rare progressive cerebrovascular disorder that can be congenital or acquired and involves progressive stenosis and occlusion of cerebral arteries. The brain through compensatory angeogenesis then attempts to compensate for ischemia by producing a local network of tiny blood vessels, which appear cloud-like on angiograms. Consistent with multifocal or diffuse areas of ischemia, people with moyamoya often have multiple areas of cognitive impairment. A thorough literature review of the neuropsychological profile in individuals diagnosed with moyamoya disease is provided. Med

Pediatric Mastocytosis: A Review of the Literature.

Mastocytosis has a bimodal distribution often presenting in children from birth to 2 years of age and in those over the age of 15. Pediatric mastocytosis is due to the effects of mast-cell degranulation enzymes such as histamine and tryptase causing the presentation of pruritis, flushing, vesicles, abdominal and bone pain, or headache. Three different forms of mastocytosis can occur: urticaria pigmentosa, diffuse cutaneous, and solitary mastocytoma. Systemic symptoms are typically a result of mast-cell mediator release but do not prove systemic mast-cell hyperplasia. In this review, we present

Locked-in: the syndrome as depicted in literature.

Protagonists who are locked-in can be found throughout fiction, probably because being locked-in serves as a strong philosophical metaphor for human existence. In this chapter, three protagonists who are locked-in due to physical/medical reasons will be described. The fictitious stories of Noirtier from The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas and that of Madame Raquin from Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola are followed by the real-life story of Jean-Dominique Bauby's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Dumas' Noirtier is considered the first description of the locked-in syndrome in literature,

Temporal variability in the deglutition literature.

A literature review was conducted on temporal measures of swallowing in healthy individuals with the purpose of determining the degree of variability present in such measures within the literature. A total of 46 studies that met inclusion criteria were reviewed. The definitions and descriptive statistics for all reported temporal parameters were compiled for meta-analysis. In total, 119 different temporal parameters were found in the literature. The three most-frequently occurring durational measures were upper esophageal sphincter opening, laryngeal closure, and hyoid movement. The three most

Emphysematous cystitis: a review of the literature.

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a rare form of complicated urinary tract infection, its characteristic feature being gas within the bladder wall and lumen. Patients with EC present with variable clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to severe sepsis. EC is typically observed in elderly women with severe diabetes mellitus. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae are often isolated from urine cultures. Imaging methods, such as plain conventional abdominal radiography and computed tomography, are pivotal for obtaining a definitive diagnosis of EC. Most cases can be treated with a co

Choledochal cysts : a review of literature.

Choledochal cysts are cystic dilation of extrahepatic duct, intrahepatic duct, or both that may result in significant morbidity and mortality, unless identified early and managed appropriately. The incidence is common in Asian population compared with western counterpart with more than two third of the cases in Asia being reported from Japan. The traditional anatomic classification system is under debate with more focus on etiopathogenesis and other aspects of choledochal cysts. Even though categorized under the same roof, choledochal cysts vary with respect to their natural course, complicati

Oral mucoceles - review of the literature.

Oral mucoceles are mucin filled cavities and lined by ductal epithelium or covered by granulation tissue in retention or extravasation type respectively. The extra-vasation type is very common in the minor salivary glands (particularly in the labial glands), but very infrequent in the major salivary glands, whilst most of the retention cyst affect the major salivary glands. Partial obstruction of duct and spillage of mucin following trauma are the chief etiological factors. Though the two lesions are clinically indistinguishable, the patients are typically older than in the case of extra-vasat

Cancers of the appendix: review of the literatures.

Cancers of the appendix are rare. Most of them are found accidentally on appendectomies performed for appendicitis. When reviewed, majority of the tumors were carcinoid, adenoma, and lymphoma. Adenocarcinomas of appendix are only 0.08% of all cancers and the treatment remains controversial. Here we are reporting a 46-year-old male presented with symptoms of appendicitis, diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the appendix. The patient was treated with appendectomy and refused further surgical intervention to complete hemicolectomy. Up to date, he remains asymptomatic. We performed literature review

Pyostomatitis vegetans: a review of the literature.

Pyostomatitis vegetans (PV) is a rare condition characterized by pustules that affect the oral mucosa. It is a highly specific marker for inflammatory bowel disease and its correct recognition may lead to the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Thus, a presumptive diagnosis of PV should suggest a complete gastrointestinal investigation. PV pathogenesis is as yet unknown, although immunological and microbial factors have been suggested as possible aetiological factors. Pyostomatitis vegetans is characterized by erythematous, thickened oral mucosa with multiple pustules and super

Eagle's syndrome: a review of the literature.

Eagle's syndrome represents symptoms brought on by compression of regional structures by elongation of the styloid process or ossification of the stylohyoid or stylomandibular ligaments. Watt Eagle described it for the first time in 1937, dividing it into two subtypes: the "classic syndrome" and the "stylo-carotid artery syndrome." Many theories have been put forth regarding its pathogenesis. Depending on the underlying pathogenetic mechanism and the anatomical structures compressed or irritated by the styloid process, symptoms vary greatly, ranging from cervicofacial pain to cerebral ischemia
