Metastatic breast cancer simulating well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms of visceral organs.

A series of metastatic breast carcinoma (MBC) mimicking visceral well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms has not previously been reported. We identified 5 consultation cases originally submitted as neuroendocrine neoplasms in women but that were found to be MBC on subsequent review. All 5 neoplasms demonstrated nested architecture and relatively uniform nuclei. Four patients had a known history of breast cancer (remote in 3 and concurrent in 1), but the metastases (3 liver, 1 lung) labeled for chromogranin and/or synaptophysin, prompting misdiagnosis as neuroendocrine neoplasm. In a fifth

[Malignant lymphomas of the liver: new diagnostic algorithms].

Primary hepatic lymphomas represent rare neoplasms, which are partly observed in association with chronic viral hepatitis, immunosuppression and autoimmune diseases. In contrast, secondary hepatic lymphomas are much more frequent and represent disseminated disease. Lymphomas involving the liver include, with decreasing frequency, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, small lymphocytic lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma and extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma. Many B-cell lymphomas in the liver reveal a characteristic infiltration pattern allowing a rapi

A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma with massive invasion to the liver and multiorgan causing acute liver failure.

INTRODUCTION: Acute liver failure (ALF) due to a malignant neoplasm is rare. Here, we present a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) with massive invasion to the liver and multi-organ causing ALF that resulted in a poor outcome. A 56-year-old man was referred to our hospital for ALF of unknown cause. Abdominal imaging studies revealed hepatomegaly with multiple intrahepatic lesions. The patient also showed disseminated intravascular coagulation. Despite administration of prednisolone for the ALF, he died suddenly of respiratory failure on day 3 after admission. Autopsy showed a markedly enla

Structural alterations of liver parenchyma induced by anabolic steroids.

The long-term effects of an anabolic steroid (Dianabol) an the liver of motor-active mice was investigated. The pathologic changes occurring are due to cholestasis, peliosis hepatis, and diffuse hepatitis. It was assumed that a pathogenic relationship between cholestasis, peliosis, and cirrhosis exists. Neoplasms seldom occurred, but it was suggested that anabolic steroids do not primarily induce the formation of liver tumors.

Benign Biliary Tumors and Precursor Neoplasms: An Updated Clinicopathological and Molecular Review Based on the 2026 WHO Classification.

Benign biliary tumors and precursor neoplasms of the biliary tract are a heterogeneous group of uncommon neoplasms with significant clinical and diagnostic implications. Their importance lies in their variable malignant potential and morphological and molecular similarities to pancreatic neoplasms. The sixth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Digestive System Tumours (WHO DST6), published online in 2026, introduced major revisions to the classification of these entities. According to WHO DST6, benign tumors and precursor neoplasms of the liver and intrahepatic bile duct

Imaging of paediatric liver tumours with pathological correlation.

Paediatric hepatic tumours are relatively rare with malignant lesions being twice as frequent as benign neoplasms and are mostly metastases. Imaging has a significant role in the evaluation of most paediatric liver tumours. Differentiating benign from malignant tumours is important as it significantly affects treatment decisions. We present the characteristic radiological and pathological features of the most common paediatric liver tumours.

Non-immune fetal hydrops with hepatic hemangioendothelioma and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome: a case report.

A premature infant presented with non-immune hydrops fetalis, a liver mass, thrombocytopenia, and hypofibrinogenemia. Histologic examination of the liver tumor showed an infantile hemangioendothelioma. The clinical features of this case can be explained by anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and coagulopathy. The association with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, the pathophysiology of non-immune hydrops fetalis, and primary hepatic neoplasms of the neonate are discussed.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma of the liver and lung: a case report with morphohological and immunohistochemical features of tumor.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma is extremely rare neoplasm that mainly occurs in the lymph nodes. Only 45 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a case of this sarcoma arising from the liver and lung, a previosly unreported site for this neoplasm. An 19-year-old girl deteriorated rapidly after artificial abortion and died 4 weeks later. Autopsy showed markedly enlarged liver and lung with numerous nodules up to 0.5 centimeters in diameter. Microscopically, nodules was composed of large pleomorphic cells that were immunohistochemically positive for proteins S-100 a

Cancer risk, screening and surveillance in primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare chronic inflammatory condition mainly of the large bile ducts, affecting predominantly young men, and is associated with the presence of inflammatory bowel disease. There is no known cure for PSC, which progresses to cirrhosis or death over 10-20 years. Hepatobiliary malignancy, especially cholangiocarcinoma, is a feared complication associated with poor overall survival. Screening and surveillance appear to improve overall outcomes. To capture as many relevant studies, broad search criteria were employed within the PubMed database. Given the high

Diethylnitrosamine-Induced Liver Tumorigenesis in Mice Under High-Hat High-Sucrose Diet: Stepwise High-Resolution Ultrasound Imaging and Histopathological Correlations.

The hepatotoxic N-nitroso compound diethylnitrosamine (DEN) administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) induces liver neoplasms in rodents that reproducibly recapitulate some aspects of human hepatocarcinogenesis. In particular, DEN drives the stepwise formation of pre-neoplastic and neoplastic (benign or malignant) hepatocellular lesions reminiscent of the initiation-promotion-progression sequence typical of chemical carcinogenesis. In humans, the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is also a multi-step process triggered by continuous hepatocellular injury, chronic inflammation, and compe

Epidemiologic Trends and Factors Associated With Overall Survival for Patients With Hepatobiliary Neuroendocrine Neoplasms in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) constitute a heterogeneous group of rare tumors that most commonly originate from the gastrointestinal tract and lungs, with a consistently rising global incidence over recent decades. Hepatobiliary neuroendocrine neoplasms (HB-NENs), defined as primary NENs arising in the liver and biliary tract, are exceedingly uncommon, accounting for less than 0.5% of all NENs. Owing to their low incidence, atypical clinical presentations, and the paucity of large-scale datasets, no distinct World Health Organization (WHO) classification criteria have yet been es

Massive/Mass-forming Ductular Reaction Associated With Vascular Occlusion in Various Underlying Basic Liver Diseases.

Massive/mass-forming ductular reaction of the liver (MDR) is occasionally in the differential diagnosis with true bile duct tumors. Our diagnostic histomorphological and immunohistochemical study of 14 cases from a consultant collective of 2970 cases follows the appearance of MDR with regard to various underlying liver diseases and the conditions of pathologic perfusion. We describe MDR measuring up to 7 cm in localized form or affecting up to 70% of the parenchyma in subacute liver necrosis. MDR developed in the context of severe inflammatory liver diseases and liver cirrhosis, as well as in

Resection of advanced stage malignant retroperitoneal neoplasms with tumor thrombus extending into the right atrium: report of four cases.

Surgery for retroperitoneal neoplasms with a tumor thrombus extension into the right atrium is challenging. This study reviewed four surgical cases of advanced stage malignant neoplasms with the tumor thrombus extending into the right atrium. The malignant neoplasms involved the kidney in two patients, and the liver and adrenal gland in one each. The tumor thrombus was removed through a longitudinal cavotomy and right atriotomy in all cases. The inferior vena cava reconstruction was performed by directly closing it in one patient and by pericardial patch suturing in another. Cardiopulmonary by

Sudden unexpected death in infancy associated with an epithelial-type hepatoblastoma in a 6-month-old infant.

Sudden unexpected death in infancy and childhood attributable to undiagnosed neoplasia is rare. Malignant neoplasms are very uncommon in infancy, with an age-standardized incidence rate of 118.3 per million. Primary malignant liver tumors are rare, with hepatoblastoma accounting for up to two thirds of cases. Although hepatoblastoma is the most common malignant neoplasm of the liver in childhood, it only accounts for 3.1% of childhood cancers for infants less than 12 months of age. We describe the first case of sudden death in an apparently healthy 6-month-old infant whose autopsy revealed an

Hepatic tumors in children.

Although they account for only 1% to 4% of solid tumors in children, hepatic tumors and pseudotumors offer a diagnostic challenge to the clinician seeing only an occasional case. Metastatic lesions such as neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor, and lymphoma are the most common neoplasm seen in the liver, but 10 distinct primary tumors and pseudotumors of the liver occur with some regularity, and a few others may be seen rarely, including leiomyosarcoma, rhabdoid tumor, and endodermal sinus tumor. Five of these neoplasms--hepatoblastoma, infantile hemangio-endothelioma, mesenchymal hamartoma, undifferent

Combined hepato-cholangiocarcinoma arising in a gallbladder intracystic papillary neoplasm. A new view on so-called "hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder".

A 62-year-old female presented with abdominal pain, weight loss of 20 kg in the prior 6 months, and a palpable mass in the right upper quadrant during physical exam. Standard liver tests, including screening for hepatitis B and C and alpha-fetoprotein were negative or within normal limits. Computerized tomography depicted a transmural gallbladder tumor infiltrating into the adjacent liver with an irregular ill-defined mass occupying segments IV-V-VI, measuring 13.0 x 9.2 x 8.5 cm, with a solid-cystic component and heterogeneous captation of endovenous contrast media. A Novel Entity Among Vascular Liver Tumors: The First Reported Liver Transplantation. Is It Feasible?

Liver transplant could be considered for certain tumors even if there is still dubious indication, as in the case of hepatic small vessels neoplasms that pose a difficult differential diagnosis with liver angiosarcoma. Liver transplant could be the best choice for patients with stable or slow-progressing tumors, for young patients with impaired quality of life, and when it would use organs that would be otherwise discarded but are capable of affording a good function. Vascular tumors are very heterogeneous cancers and our case represents the first description of a new histologic lesion that ca

Simultaneous laparoscopic liver metastasectomy and intersphincteric resection for neuroendocrine tumor of the rectum by natural orifice specimen extraction surgery.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are relatively uncommon rectal neoplasms, and the liver is the most common site of distant metastasis. Simultaneous liver and colorectal resections by minimally invasive surgery and natural orifice specimen extraction are gaining popularity, reducing morbidity. We describe a case of rectal NET with liver metastasis operated simultaneously by laparoscopy with both specimens extracted via the anal canal. Transanal or transvaginal natural orifice specimen extraction surgery for suitable cases is underutilized and only isolated case reports for simultaneous resections e

Small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasm: what surgeons want to know.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the small bowel are a diverse group of tumors with a broad spectrum of imaging findings and clinical implications. Most tumors originate in close proximity to the ileocecal valve and most commonly metastasize to the mesentery and liver. This review will highlight the imaging findings of primary and metastatic small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasm that are most relevant to the surgical team.
