The different subtypes of temporal lobe seizures networks.

Temporal lobe epilepsies (TLEs) are among the forms of epilepsy most frequently encountered in surgical evaluations, characterized by a wide range of anatomical, functional, and electroclinical subtypes. Traditional classifications, such as mesial and lateral TLE, have been broadened by advances in stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), revealing more complex forms such as mesio-lateral and temporal-plus seizures. These findings support the concept of epileptogenic networks, emphasizing interconnected regions rather than isolated focal areas in the genesis of seizures. Quantitative tools, such a

Diffusion tensor tractography reveals disrupted topological efficiency in white matter structural networks in multiple sclerosis.

Little is currently known about the alterations in the topological organization of the white matter (WM) structural networks in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In the present study, we used diffusion tensor imaging and deterministic tractography to map the WM structural networks in 39 MS patients and 39 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Graph theoretical methods were applied to investigate alterations in the network efficiency in these patients. The MS patients and the controls exhibited efficient small-world properties in their WM structural networks. However, the global and lo

Temporal Lobe Spikes Affect Distant Intrinsic Connectivity Networks.

Objective: To evaluate local and distant blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal changes related to interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) in drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Methods: Thirty-three TLE patients undergoing EEG-functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) as part of the presurgical workup were consecutively enrolled. First, a single-subject spike-related analysis was performed: (a) to verify the BOLD concordance with the presumed Epileptogenic Zone (EZ); and (b) to investigate the Intrinsic Connectivity Networks (ICN) involvement. Then, a group analysis was perfo

Auditory cortical delta-entrainment interacts with oscillatory power in multiple fronto-parietal networks.

The timing of slow auditory cortical activity aligns to the rhythmic fluctuations in speech. This entrainment is considered to be a marker of the prosodic and syllabic encoding of speech, and has been shown to correlate with intelligibility. Yet, whether and how auditory cortical entrainment is influenced by the activity in other speech-relevant areas remains unknown. Using source-localized MEG data, we quantified the dependency of auditory entrainment on the state of oscillatory activity in fronto-parietal regions. We found that delta band entrainment interacted with the oscillatory activity

Independence and coherence in temporal sequence computation across the fronto-parietal network.

Time processing requires distributed and coordinated cortical dynamics, yet how multiple brain areas flexibly switch between coherent and independent temporal representations remains unclear. Using mesoscale two-photon calcium imaging, we simultaneously recorded neuronal populations in the secondary motor cortex and posterior parietal cortex of mice performing a novel alternating-interval timing task. Both areas encoded elapsed time through similar high-dimensional sequential activity, and decoding analyses revealed both coherent temporal errors shared across areas and independent errors confi

Synchronized brain network associated with essential tremor as revealed by magnetoencephalography.

Despite the fact that essential tremor (ET) is the most prevalent movement disorder, the underlying pathological mechanisms are not fully understood. There is accumulating evidence that this specific type of tremor is mainly of central origin, in particular involving inferior olive, cerebellum, thalamus, and primary motor cortex. We studied 8 patients with ET recording simultaneously neural activity with a whole-scalp neuromagnetometer and tremor activity with surface electromyography (EMG). Subjects performed an isometric contraction of the left forearm. Tremor frequency of 5 to 7 Hz and its

Strengthening community-based surveillance: lessons learned from the 2018-2020 Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Ebola outbreak.

INTRODUCTION: There has been little documentation of the large networks of community health workers that contributed to Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) surveillance during the 2018-2020 Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) epidemic in the form of community-based surveillance (CBS). These networks, comprised entirely of local community members, were a critical and mostly unrecognized factor in ending the epidemic. Challenges with collection, compilation, and analysis of CBS data have made their contribution difficult to quantify. From November 2019 to March 2020, the DRC Ministry of Health (MoH), the W

Excitatory and inhibitory networks diverge following early blindness.

Early visual deprivation profoundly reshapes cortical functional organization, yet the contribution of distinct neuronal populations to large-scale network plasticity remains unclear. We combined awake wide-field mesoscale calcium imaging within promoter-defined neuronal populations to characterize resting-state functional connectivity in pan-neuronal (hSyn), excitatory (Thy1), and inhibitory (mDLX) cortical networks in sighted and neonatal enucleated mice. Graph-theoretical analyses revealed a convergent reorganization pattern across populations in which medial higher visual and associative c

Hemispheric Patterns of Recruitment of Object Processing Regions in Early Alzheimer's Disease: A Study Along the Entire Ventral Stream.

BACKGROUND: Investigation of neural response patterns along the entire network of functionally defined object recognition ventral stream regions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is surprisingly lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate putative functional reorganization along a wide-ranging network of known regions in the ventral visual stream in mild AD. METHODS: Overall we investigated 6 regions of interest (5 of which were not investigated before), in 19 AD patients and 19 controls, in both hemispheres along the ventral visual stream: Fusiform Face Area, Fusiform Body Area, Extrastriate Body

Neural correlates underlying local and global processing during visual search across adulthood.

Visual processing relies on the identification of both local and global features of visual stimuli. While well investigated at the behavioral level, the underlying brain mechanisms are less clear, especially in the context of aging. Using fMRI, we aimed to investigate the neural correlates underlying local and global processing in early and late adulthood. We recruited 77 healthy adults aged 19-77 who completed a visual search task based on 2-level hierarchical stimuli made of squares and/or circles. Participants were instructed to detect a target (a square) at either a local (small) or global

Urbanization as a facilitator of gene flow in a human health pest.

Urban fragmentation can reduce gene flow that isolates populations, reduces genetic diversity and increases population differentiation, all of which have negative conservation implications. Alternatively, gene flow may actually be increased among urban areas consistent with an urban facilitation model. In fact, urban adapter pests are able to thrive in the urban environment and may be experiencing human-mediated transport. Here, we used social network theory with a population genetic approach to investigate the impact of urbanization on genetic connectivity in the Western black widow spider, a

More widespread functionality of posterior language area in patients with brain tumors.

Damage to the posterior language area (PLA), or Wernicke's area causes cortical reorganization in the corresponding regions of the contralateral hemisphere. However, the details of reorganization within the ipsilateral hemisphere are not fully understood. In this context, direct electrical stimulation during awake surgery can provide valuable opportunities to investigate neuromodulation of the human brain in vivo, which is difficult through the non-invasive approaches. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of the cortical reorganization of the PLA within the ipsilate

Electrophysiological effects of deep brain stimulation in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To study deep brain stimulation (DBS)-induced electrophysiological changes over time in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: We performed EEG recordings on 4 AN patients treated with DBS at 3 time points, and on 8 age-matched controls. We extracted oscillatory power in the alpha and beta bands, connectivity and global network organization parameters based on graph theory. RESULTS: We found strong significant within-subject changes in alpha and beta power over time. Nominally significant effects were observed for posterior left (L) alpha (p = 0.034) and anterior/posterior

Distinct Patterns of Automatic and Controlled Incongruent Information Processing in the Human Brain.

It is a fundamental ability to discriminate incongruent information in daily activity. However, the underlying neural dynamics are still unclear. Using stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), in this study, we investigated the fine-grained and different states of incongruent information processing in patients with refractory epilepsy who underwent intracranial electrode implantation. All patients performed a delayed match-to-sample paradigm in the sequential pairs of visual stimuli (S1 followed by S2). Participants were asked to discriminate whether the relevant feature of S2 was identical to S1

Cortical Dynamic Causality Network for Auditory-Motor Tasks.

Motor preparation and execution require the interactions of a large-scale brain network, while the study of the dynamic changes of their interactions could uncover the underlying neural mechanism of the corresponding information processing. This dynamic analysis requires high temporal resolution of the recorded signals. Electroencephalogram (EEG) with high temporal resolution has been widely used in related studies. However, studies based on scalp EEG always lead to distorted results, due to scalp volume conduction, compared with that of cortically recorded signals. In the current study, the d

Neural synchrony links sensorimotor cortices in a network for facial motor control.

Primate societies rely on the production and interpretation of social signals, in particular those displayed by the face. Facial movements are controlled, according to the dominant neuropsychological schema, by two separate circuits, one originating in medial frontal cortex controlling emotional expressions, and a second one originating in lateral motor and premotor areas controlling voluntary facial movements. Despite this functional dichotomy, cortical anatomy suggests that medial and lateral areas are directly connected and may thus operate as a single network. Here, we test these contrasti

Evaluation of epileptogenic networks in children with tuberous sclerosis complex using EEG-fMRI.

PURPOSE: Ninety percent of patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) have epilepsy. Identification of epileptogenic areas can be difficult and studies are needed to characterize the epileptogenic network in more detail. METHODS: Five children with TSC and focal epilepsy were studied using simultaneous EEG and functional MRI recordings. Tubers were marked by a neuroradiologist on the anatomical MRI. Spike-associated BOLD (blood oxygenation level-dependent) responses were superimposed with lesions. RESULTS: Thirteen different types of interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) were analyzed

Cognitive control related network analysis: A novel way to measure neuron fiber connection of Alzheimer's disease.

Effective measurement of cognitive impairment caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD) will provide a chance for early medical intervention and delay the disease onset. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides a non-intrusive examination of cranial nerve diseases which can help us observe the microstructure of neuron fibers. Cognitive control network (CCN) consists of the brain regions that highly related to human self-control. In this study, hub-and-spoke model which was widely used in transportation and sociology area had been employed to analyze the relationship of CCN and other regions under its

Functional and structural lesion network mapping in neurological and psychiatric disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The traditional approach to studying the neurobiological mechanisms of brain disorders and localizing brain function involves identifying brain abnormalities and comparing them to matched controls. This method has been instrumental in clinical neurology, providing insight into the functional roles of different brain regions. However, it becomes challenging when lesions in diverse regions produce similar symptoms. To address this, researchers have begun mapping brain lesions to functional or structural networks, a process known as lesion network mapping (LNM). This approach seeks to
