Loneliness, social relations and health and well-being in deprived communities.

There is a growing policy concern about the extent of loneliness in advanced societies, and its prevalence among various social groups. This study looks at loneliness among people living in deprived communities, where there may be additional barriers to social engagement including low incomes, fear of crime, poor services and transient populations. The aim was to examine the prevalence of loneliness, and also its associations with different types of social contacts and forms of social support, and its links to self-reported health and well-being in the population group. The method involved a c

Loneliness is associated with an increased risk of sedentary life in older Israelis.

OBJECTIVES: Both loneliness and insufficient physical activity are common in old age. This study investigated the association between loneliness and adherence to recommended guidelines of physical activity in a national sample of Israelis, and examined whether loneliness was a risk factor for insufficient physical activity independent of other variables. METHODS: A random sample of 1663 (799 men) older adults aged 65+ reported their physical activity routine, and based on official guidelines were categorized as sufficiently active, insufficiently active, and inactive. In addition, they were d

Toward a better understanding of loneliness in community-dwelling older adults.

The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study was to explore the meaning of loneliness in community-dwelling older adults and to understand their daily practices in coping with loneliness. The sample consisted of 8 women and 4 men. Interviews were conducted with the 12 participants utilizing several tools, including 3 separate interview guides and the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Version 3 (Russell, 1996). A critical finding was that many participants experienced loneliness as a result of disrupted meaningful engagement, due to age-related changes, as well as other losses, including death

Loneliness in relation to suicide ideation and parasuicide: a population-wide study.

Some links between loneliness and different manifestations of suicidal conduct have been reported in variety of subgroups (e.g., college students, the elderly, psychiatric patients). We tested this hypothesis by using the results of a population-wide survey. Strong associations among suicide ideation, parasuicide and different ways of being lonely and alone, defined either subjectively (i.e., the feeling), or objectively (i.e., living alone or being without friends), were observed. Moreover, prevalence of suicide ideation and parasuicide increased with the degree of loneliness. Only minimal di

Experiences of loneliness among older deaf adults who use sign language.

Loneliness is recognized worldwide as a risk to well-being and health. It emerges from the discrepancy between our expectations of social relationships and the reality. However, very little is known about the experiences of loneliness among older deaf adults. The aim of the study was to describe the experiences and expressions of loneliness among 12 older deaf adults who use sign language. We interviewed them, and the interview transcripts were analyzed inductively. Loneliness manifested itself in a variety of ways in the narratives, facial expressions, postures, movements, gestures, and the v

Loneliness Among Older Adults Receiving Home Care: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Study.

Background/Objectives: Norway's ageing population includes many older adults living alone who receive home care and are at increased risk of loneliness. Loneliness is the subjective sense of unmet or imbalanced social needs, shaped by culture and living conditions, and can be social (lack of contact) or emotional (absence of close, trusting relationships). In older people, it often follows partner or role loss or reduced mobility or participation and is associated with emotional pain, lowered self-worth and poorer health and quality of life. This study aimed to explore patients' experiences of

Insomnia mediates the longitudinal association between loneliness and burnout among nurses.

Burnout is common among nurses and undermines their health, well-being and job performance. The purpose of this two-wave longitudinal study was to analyze the relationships between loneliness and three dimensions of burnout (i.e. exhaustion, cynicism and professional efficacy) in this professional group and to test whether these relationships are mediated by insomnia. A total of 520 nurses were assessed at two time points, T1 and T2, six months apart, with a set of self-reported questionnaires including the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS), the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and the Masl

Body-Esteem, Self-Esteem and Loneliness among Social Media Young Users.

UNLABELLED: The use of social networking sites for socializing, having fun, solving academic tasks or even getting counselling for health-related problems is now inevitable. METHODS: A total of 427 medical students, who are users of social media sites, were included in the research. Data about socio-demographic, anthropometric, and self-rated items regarding satisfaction with physical and mental health were collected. Three psychological tools were also used to measure self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), body-esteem (Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults) and loneliness (UCLA Lo

Brief induction of loneliness decreases vagal regulation during social information processing.

Perceived social isolation, or loneliness, has been repeatedly linked to numerous adverse health outcomes. Much effort has been directed towards elucidating the mechanisms underlying its effects on the cardiovascular system, which may explain the deleterious effects on morbidity and mortality. It has been previously suggested that perceived social isolation can impair effective parasympathetic regulation and physiological adjustment to the demands of the social environment. Thus, the present study aimed at investigating the causal impact of an induction of loneliness on vagal activity during s

HIV-positive Mozambican migrants in South Africa: loneliness, secrecy and disclosure.

South Africa continues to bear a heavy burden of HIV and a significant proportion of the nation's population consists of immigrants from other severely afflicted African nations. Yet little is known about how migrant populations respond to HIV in shifting cultural and clinical landscapes. Analysing 21 ethnographic life history interviews, this paper explores the social complexities of living with antiretroviral therapy and disclosure of serostatus among HIV-positive Mozambican migrants in Johannesburg. It focuses on (i) conceptualising the 'biosocial ambiance of illness'; (ii) how transformati

Loneliness among students with special educational needs in mainstream seventh grade.

The goals of this study were twofold. The first aim was to explore loneliness prevalence in typically developing students, students with ASD and students with motor and/or sensory disabilities in mainstream 7th grade in Belgium. The second aim was to explore the relations between number of friends, friendship quality, social self-concept on the one hand and loneliness on the other for each of these three groups, and to compare them across groups. In this study, 108 students with special educational needs (SEN; i.e., 58 students with ASD and 50 students with motor and/or sensory disabilities) w

Loneliness accentuates age differences in cardiovascular responses to social evaluative threat.

The effects of aging and loneliness on cardiovascular stress responses were examined in 91 young (18-30 years) and 91 older (65-80 years) normotensive adults. Participants completed the revised UCLA Loneliness Scale and a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test. Piece-wise linear growth-curve analysis was used to model group differences in resting, reactivity, and recovery levels of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Replicating and extending prior research, analyses revealed age-related increases in resting SBP and DBP. Adjusting for demographics and he

Social isolation and loneliness: differences between older rural and urban Manitobans.

The purpose of this paper was to identify predictors of social isolation and loneliness for very old rural and urban adults. With data from the 1996 Aging in Manitoba Study (N = 1,868; age range 72-104), separate multiple regression models were constructed for rural and urban sub-samples, using the life space index (LSI) to measure social isolation as one outcome, and a loneliness index created by the authors from a combination of items to measure loneliness as a second outcome. Different factors were found to predict the outcomes for the two sub-samples. The models with isolation as the outco

Living arrangements, loneliness, and social support of low-vision older clients.

1. Loneliness has been linked to both psychological and medical problems. The study of loneliness and social support should interest nurses because nursing interventions may assist in preventing or alleviating potential health problems. 2. Study results indicate that low-vision older clients who lived alone were no lonelier than those who lived with others. Clients who lived alone were as satisfied with their social networks as those who lived with others. The actual number of supporters in the social network had no effect on loneliness for either group. 3. Neither group was particularly lonel

Loneliness Biases Social Engagement Decisions: Evidence From Value-Based Choice Models.

Loneliness is a well-established risk factor for adverse mental health outcomes and persistent social withdrawal. We tested whether loneliness is associated with systematic alterations in value-based social decision-making and examined mechanisms that may sustain withdrawal. Across two preregistered online studies (total N = 6517), participants were randomly assigned to positive, negative, or neutral social expectation priming and completed a vignette-based task manipulating reward, effort, and threat. Loneliness and psychopathological symptoms were assessed by self-reports. Across both studie
