Integrated fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/CT compared to standard contrast-enhanced CT for characterization and staging of pulmonary tumors eligible for surgical resection.

BACKGROUND: Accurate staging is necessary to determine the appropriate therapy in patients with lung cancer. Few studies have compared integrated fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and contrast-enhanced CT in the characterization and staging of pulmonary tumors considered eligible for surgical resection. PURPOSE: To compare 18F-FDG PET/CT with standard contrast-enhanced CT for the diagnosis and staging of lung neoplasms eligible for surgical resection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-six consecutive patients (56 male, 20 female; m

Neuroendocrine Neoplasia in Extranodal Marginal Zone Lymphoma of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT Lymphoma) of the Lung: A Case Report and Immunohistochemistry Analysis of Eight Pulmonary MALT Lymphomas.

Carcinoid tumorlets are peribronchiolar proliferations of neuroendocrine cells often associated with lung scars. Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) is a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that frequently involves the gastrointestinal tract but less commonly is described in the lung. Simultaneous occurrence of neuroendocrine neoplasms and MALT lymphoma is extraordinarily rare and has predominately been reported in the gastrointestinal tract. In this article, we describe the case of a 73-year-old female with coexisting pulmonary MALT lymphoma and carcinoid

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma of the liver and lung: a case report with morphohological and immunohistochemical features of tumor.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma is extremely rare neoplasm that mainly occurs in the lymph nodes. Only 45 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a case of this sarcoma arising from the liver and lung, a previosly unreported site for this neoplasm. An 19-year-old girl deteriorated rapidly after artificial abortion and died 4 weeks later. Autopsy showed markedly enlarged liver and lung with numerous nodules up to 0.5 centimeters in diameter. Microscopically, nodules was composed of large pleomorphic cells that were immunohistochemically positive for proteins S-100 a

Perivascular epitheloid cell tumour (PEComa) of the retroperitoneum - a rare tumor with uncertain malignant behaviour: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Perivascular epitheloid cell tumours are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by a proliferation of perivascular cells with an epitheloid phenotype and expression of myomelanocytic markers. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a cystic perivascular epitheloid cell tumour of the retroperitoneum associated with multifocal lung lesions. A 27-year-old woman underwent laparotomy to remove a 10 x 6 x 4 cm sized retroperitoneal mass. The resected specimen was subjected to frozen and permanent histological sections with conventional and immunohistochemical stains, includin

Socioeconomic differences in cancer incidence and mortality.

This chapter summarizes accumulated data on the presence, magnitude and consistency of socioeconomic differentials in mortality and incidence of all malignant neoplasms and 24 individual types of neoplasms in 37 populations in 21 countries. More or less consistent excess risks in men in lower social strata were observed for all respiratory cancers (nose, larynx and lung) and cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, and, with a number of exceptions, liver, as well as for all malignancies taken together. For women, low-class excesses were consistently encountered for cancers

Adenocarcinoma of Lung Presenting as Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome.

Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a paraneoplastic neuromuscular junction disorder. LEMS presents with muscular weakness and fatigability, mainly involving the proximal lower limbs. There are 2 types of LEMS depending on the etiology: paraneoplastic and idiopathic. The paraneoplastic form, which constitutes more than a half of the cases, is mostly associated with intrathoracic neoplasms. Most cases are seen in patients with small cell lung cancer; other subtypes of lung cancer are extremely rare. In this article, we report a case of LEMS as a rare association with adenocarcinoma of t

Follicular thyroid carcinoma metastatic to skin: a small papule and a big diagnostic change.

Cutaneous metastases are uncommon in daily practice, although very important, since they may be the first manifestation of an undiscovered primary neoplasm or the first indication of recurrence. Cutaneous metastases from the breast are the most frequent in women and cutaneous metastases from the lung are the most frequent in men. Thyroid carcinoma, despite representing the most frequent endocrine neoplasm, is considered a rare neoplasm, corresponding to 1% of malignant neoplasms diagnosed. Cutaneous metastases from follicular carcinoma are rare and occur mainly in the head and neck area. We re

Myeloid neoplasm with the abnormality of PDGFRB gene secondary interstitial pneumonia: A case report.

We report a case of myeloid neoplasm with the abnormality of PDGFRB gene secondary interstitial pneumonia. A 66-year-old male complained dry cough and shortness of breath after regular activities. Two years ago, high-resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) showed interstitial lung diseases, and no clear etiology was found. At that time, the diagnosis was idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. In the period of hospitalization, the interstitial lung disease was significantly advanced, and the peripheral blood eosinophil was significantly increased. ETV6-PDGFRB fusion genes was positive detected by FIS

[85-years-old patient with paraneoplastic polyneuropathy].

Symptoms associated with neoplasms that are not a direct result of tumor growth, metastases, concomitant infection or antineoplastic treatment are known as paraneoplastic syndrome (PS). PS results from autoimmune reaction against antigens common to host nervous cells and neoplasm. The most common neurological PS are Lambert-Eaton syndrome, paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration and polyneuropathies. The most common neoplasms inducing PS are oat cell lung carcinoma, ovarian carcinoma, breast carcinoma, neuroblastoma, thymoma and lymphoma. From 2001 to 2004 at the Dept. of Neurology, Ageing, Deg

Urgent Chemotherapy for Life-Threatening Complications Related to Solid Neoplasms.

OBJECTIVES: Solid neoplasms can be directly responsible for organ failures at the time of diagnosis or relapse. The management of such specific complications relies on urgent chemotherapy and eventual instrumental or surgical procedures, combined with advanced life support. We conducted a multicenter study to address the prognosis of this condition. DESIGN: A multicenter retrospective (2001-2015) chart review. SETTING: Medical and respiratory ICUs. PATIENTS: Adult patients who received urgent chemotherapy in the ICU for organ failure related to solid neoplasms were included. The modalities

Role of Nkx2.2 immunohistochemistry in distinguishing Ewing sarcoma from neuroendocrine neoplasms at different sites.

OBJECTIVES: Ewing sarcoma is a high grade round cell sarcoma that exhibits considerable histomorphological overlap with other round cell tumors, especially neuroendocrine neoplasms. In the present study, we compared the immunohistochemical expression of Nkx2.2 in cases of Ewing's sarcoma, neuroendocrine neoplasms at different sites, and a small subset of other mesenchymal and nonmesenchymal tumors in order to assess its utility in their distinction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive retrospective study lasted for 14 months and investigated 60 cases, with 17 cases of Ewing sarcoma, 34 ca

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma presenting with miliary pattern and fatal outcome: Case report with molecular analysis & review of the literature.

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a rare benign smooth muscle neoplasm that originates in the uterus and metastasizes to distant sites-most commonly the lungs. BMLs are often found incidentally in patients with a history of uterine leiomyoma(s) and tend to be indolent. Occasionally they may be symptomatic and rarely follow an aggressive clinical course. We report an unusual case of BML presenting in a 46-year-old woman as a miliary nodular pattern bilaterally in the lungs and progressive respiratory failure. Her past medical history was significant for uterine "leiomyomas" of at least 9

Pulmonary metastases from uterine neoplasms after long tumour-free interval: four cases and review of the literature.

AIMS: Uncommon cases of lung metastasis from different types of uterine neoplasms with a long tumour-free interval after hysterectomy are reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four cases were retrieved from our surgical pathology archives. Case 1 was a 68-year-old woman who had three pulmonary nodules 23 years after hysterectomy for low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS). The nodules obtained with video-assisted thoracic surgeries were consistent with metastatic LGESS. Case 2 was a 36-year-old woman who had numerous bilateral pulmonary nodules 6 years after hysterectomy for leiomyoma. A trans

[Mediastinal Cavernous Hemangioma with Concurrent Primary Lung Cancer Resected by Thoraco scopic Surgery:Report of a Case].

Cavernous hemangiomas of the mediastinum (CHM) are relatively rare, accounting for 0.5% of all mediastinal neoplasms, and they are difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Here, we reported a CHM with a primary lung carcinoma. A 69-year-old female was referred to our hospital. The chest computed tomography( CT) revealed multiple ground glass nodules in the upper and lower lobes of the right lung and an anterior mediastinal mass enhanced heterogeneously. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the right S6 and the mediastinal tumor. A final diagnosis of CHM with concurrent l

A Case of Malignant PEComa of the Uterus Associated with Intramural Leiomyoma and Endometrial Carcinoma.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) refers to a family of mesenchymal neoplasms composed of angiomyolipomas, clear cell "sugar" tumors of the lung, and lymphangioleiomyomatoses. These tumors have a distinctive and common component of perivascular epithelioid cells that show an association with blood vessel walls and immunohistochemically display myomelanocytic differentiation. The unique neoplasms have been shown to have an expanded range through a variety of case reports, including visceral, intra-abdominal, soft tissue, and bone tumors. The retroperitoneum, abdominopelvic region,

[Poliomyelitis vaccine contaminated with SV40 and prior exposure to asbestos: cognitive study in a group of car repair workers].

Pleural and pulmonary malignancies are usually associated with previous asbestos exposure and the presence of simian virus 40 (SV40) has been detected in these neoplasms. Our study aimed to investigate the health situation among mechanics servicing buses, ex-exposed to asbestos, who received polio vaccines contaminated by SV 40. We conducted a descriptive study and so we recruited, on the basis of birth date and duration in the current job, 39 mechanics, born since 1950 until 1965, with length of service above 15 years. Of all subjects a clinical examination, a lung function test and a chest r

[The surgical treatment of lung metastases. The prognostic factors and the indications for the surgical approach].

BACKGROUND: After the liver, the lungs represent the most frequent site of metastasis from primary tumours. Surgical treatment of lung secondary neoplasms leads to a significant improvement in survival. METHODS: Between 1960-1997, 178 patients with lung metastases underwent surgery at the Thoracic Surgery Department of Turin University in a total of 193 operations. A retrospective study was made in order to identify the prognostic factors which influenced final survival in this population. RESULTS: Overall survival was 47% after 2 years and 20% after five years. Prognosis was not influenced
