A low-molecular-weight glucan from Lycium barbarum reprograms tumor-associated macrophages involving the Dectin-1/NOX2 axis to suppress hepatoma.

Polysaccharides from Lycium barbarum L., particularly LBP3, exhibit immunomodulatory and anti-tumor properties, yet their active constituents remain unclear. Here, LBP3 was fractionated into PolyA, PolyB, and PolyC. PolyC emerged as the key bioactive component, enhancing phagocytosis in vitro and showing superior anti-tumor efficacy to PolyA in vivo (125 mg/kg). Mechanistically, PolyC upregulates gp91 and p47 expression involving Dectin-1, driving M2 macrophages toward an M1 phenotype and enhancing antigen presentation and adaptive immunity. Purification of PolyC yielded its major subfraction,

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide extracts preserve retinal function and attenuate inner retinal neuronal damage in a mouse model of transient retinal ischaemia.

BACKGROUND: Retinal ischaemia is a common feature shared by numerous eye diseases. Ischaemic insult leads to retinal dysfunction and neuronal death. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides are well known for eyesight preservation. We have previously reported the effect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides on cell death, blood ocular barrier and oxidative stress within 24 h retinal ischaemia. This study focuses on retinal function and looks for ultrastructural and cellular correlates after a relatively long period of reperfusion for 7 days. METHODS: Two-hour ischaemia was induced by intraluminal occlusi

Genome-wide identification of the superoxide dismutase gene family in Lycium barbarum and their expression profiles under abiotic stress and phytohormone treatment.

BACKGROUND: Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are crucial metalloenzymes that constitute the first line of defense against reactive oxygen species in plants under abiotic stress. Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum) is an economically important medicinal plant with notable stress tolerance, however, a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of its SOD gene family has not yet been performed. RESULTS: We identified ten wolfberry SOD genes (LbaSODs) and classified them into three subfamilies: iron-SODs (Fe-SODs), manganese-SODs (Mn-SODs), and copper/zinc-SODs (Cu/Zn-SODs). Members within each subfamily shared cons

A highly specific fluorescent probe with facile pretreatment for rapid and accurate detection of sulfur dioxide residues in wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.).

INTRODUCTION: Sulfur fumigation is a traditional technique for drying, pest control and mildew prevention in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, excessive sulfur fumigation significantly impairs drug safety and clinical efficacy, rendering sulfur dioxide (SO2) residues in sulfur-fumigated TCM a growing concern. Conventional detection methods exhibit drawbacks in practical operation, such as complex procedures, long time consumption, low sensitivity and expensive instruments. METHODS: Herein, a fluorescent probe-based method was established for the rapid and accurate detection of SO2
