This is a case report of isolated marginal zone B cell lymphoma originating from the parapharyngeal space and reaching up to the side of skull base. There are no obvious clinical symptoms of the marginal zone B cell lymphoma originating in the parapharyngeal space, the imaging examination of which showed slightly blurred edge mass shadow with heterogeneous textures and no specificity. The pathological examination revealed a large number of lymphocyte proliferation, which was not specific yet. Immunohistochemistry may show the tumor was monoclonal and positive to CD20 and CD79a positive. Margin

A 45-year-old woman with no symptoms underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. A discolored area was noted at the greater curvature of the gastric upper body. Endoscopic ultrasonography demonstrated thickening of the second sonographic layer indicating that the depth of invasion was confined to the mucosa. A urea breath test and anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody test were negative. A computed tomography scan showed a consolidation at the right lung. Gastric biopsy and transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) demonstrated a monotonous proliferation of atypical small lymphocytes. A diagnosis of gastr

Nodal marginal zone B cell lymphoma is a rare type of malignant lymphoma and appears to be heterogeneous. Here we report a 60-year-old woman with stage I splenic type of nodal marginal zone B cell lymphoma with prominent follicular colonization. She was treated only by radiation therapy, and remained free of disease on examination for 4 years. The lymph node cells showed an abnormal chromosome of deletion 13, although neither bone marrow cells nor peripheral blood cells demonstrated the same abnormal chromosome. This type of chromosomal abnormality has not been previously reported and may be r

UNLABELLED: Following a traumatic injury, 25-57% of children will develop clinically significant post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The cognitive model of post-traumatic stress disorder posits that PTSS develop based on the encoding of trauma memories and the individual's appraisals of the event and its sequelae. In addition, the behaviors and cognitive strategies used to cope with distress are proposed to serve as causal and maintaining factors for PTSS. The purpose of this study was to systematically review and summarize the role of psychological processing factors, including cognitive a

Marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL) is the second most common subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Korea (17.3%). Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) can develop in almost any organ as a result of exposure to a persistent stimulus, such as chronic infection or certain autoimmune processes. Under conditions of prolonged lymphoid proliferation, a malignant clone may emerge, which is followed by the development of a MALT lymphoma. Whereas MALT lymphoma of the stomach is the most common and the most extensively studied, we focus on non-gastric MZL studies conducted in Korea that highlight the

Splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma is characterized by high genetic heterogeneity, and hepatitis C virus infection seems to be involved in a subset of patients. The aims of the analysis were to identify potential genetic alterations related to hepatitis C virus status, IgV(H) gene mutational status, and prognostic categories identified in a multicenter study (Blood 2006;107:4643). Genome-wide array comparative genomic hybridization at a 100-kilobase (kb) resolution was performed in 34 patients with splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, 12 of whom were hepatitis C virus positive. Autoimmune diseases are defined as specific, adapted immune reactions against self antigens. Immune mechanism deficiency is a causal factor for B-cell lymphoma in primary Sjögren's syndrome and autoimmune thyroid disease. Thyroid mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a 67-fold and parotid lymphoma is a 44-fold increased risk in Sjögren's syndrome and thyroiditis. MALT lymphoma was not reported in rheumatoid arthritis. We herein report the case of a 56-year-old woman with maltoma of thyroid in rheumatoid arthritis patient.

BACKGROUND: No histological or clinical criteria allow distinction between primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL) and secondary cutaneous forms of systemic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma. Consequently, staging alone can indicate the origin of lymphoma. Lymphoma is considered as primary cutaneous only if no other extracutaneous sites are found. We studied the histological appearance of 49 cutaneous lymphomas in order to find distinctive criteria indicative of an extracutaneous origin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective descriptive study of histological appearance for

To better characterize ocular adnexal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MZL-MALT), we analyzed the clinical and pathologic features of 23 patients (11 men, 12 women, median age 66 years). The tumor was confined to one ocular structure in 18 cases (conjunctiva, n=8; orbit, n=8; or lacrimal gland, n=2). Concurrent extraorbital disease was detected by the staging procedure in five patients, and preferentially involved other MALT sites. Histogenetic B cell marker studies, available in 13 cases, showed an early post-germinal center (GC) phenotype (BCL-6(-)/IRF4(+)/CD138(-

We present the study of 16 cases of splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (SMZBL) combining conventional cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization technique (FISH). We used a locus specific probe (11q22.3) that hybridizes with Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated gene (ATM) and a centromeric probe of chromosome 11 as a control. Deletions in ATM gene region have been found in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and have been considered as an independent prognosis factor in these pathologies. The aim of our study was to determine the ATM status in SMZBL

A case of synchronous adenocarcinoma of lung and extranodal marginal zone/low-grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) is reported. Primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is relatively rare, however, the majority of these lesions are low-grade B-cell lymphomas of MALT. After the stomach, the lung is the second most common location for such latter lesions. Lung adenocarcinoma in selected countries is fast becoming the leading form of non small-cell lung carcinoma. To our knowledge, this synchronous occurrence in the lung has not been previously reported. Such associat

Primary nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma is an uncommon monoclonal B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. We report a case of a 79-year-old woman who presented with generalized lymphadenopathy. Histologic and immunohistochemical examinations of biopsy sections from an axillary lymph node were consistent with nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma. Flow cytometry analysis showed 2 distinct clonal B-cell populations expressing lambda or kappa light chain restriction. Subsequently, genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) isolated from a paraffin-embedded lymph node section was analyzed for the presence

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been linked to lymphoproliferative disorders. Marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL) represents one of the most frequent lymphoma subtypes associated with HCV infection. We describe an unusual subset of HCV-associated MZL characterized by subcutaneous presentation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A series of 12 HCV-positive patients presenting with subcutaneous nodules that revealed lymphoma infiltration at biopsy. Molecular analysis of immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) gene rearrangement and FISH investigations for t(11;18)(q21;q21) and t(14;18)(q32;q21)

Primary lymphoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare. We present an asymptomatic case of primary combined DLBCL--MALT lymphoma of the gallbladder in a 78-year-old man in whom definitive diagnosis was made with laparotomic cholecystectomy. Preoperative diagnosis was supported by NMR, CT and PET scans. The pathological report identified a polypoid lesion measuring 3.5 cm in diameter. A non-Hodgkin lymphoma with two different coexisting patterns was identified histologically: large diffuse B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) associated with focal areas of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MALT-type)

There have been several case reports associating hairy cell leukemia (HCL) with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, it remains unclear whether these rare phenomena represent disease transformation or the coexistence of two separate disease entities. De novo marginal zone lymphoma can be routinely seen in elderly patients; however, in a patient with a history of HCL, a transformation is more likely than de novo blastoid marginal zone lymphoma. In this report, we present a rare case of a patient with HCL developing a high-grade blastoid marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBCL).

BACKGROUND: High-grade B-cell lymphoma (HGBL) is an unusual malignancy that includes myelocytomatosis viral oncogene (MYC), B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2), and/or BCL-6 rearrangements, termed double-hit or triple-hit lymphomas, and HGBL-not otherwise specific (HGBL-NOS), which are morphologically characteristic of HGBL but lack MYC, BCL-2, or BCL-6 rearrangements. HGBL is partially transformed by follicular lymphoma and other indolent lymphoma, with few cases of marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) transformation. HGBL often has a poor prognosis and intensive therapy is currently mainly advocated, but ther

The genetic and molecular abnormalities underlying histological transformation (HT) of nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL) to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are not well known. While del(20q12) is commonly deleted in myelodysplastic syndrome it has not previously been associated with DLBCL. We recently described a case of DLBCL harboring del(20q12) in a patient with a history of MZL involving lymph nodes and skin. Here we report eight matched cases of transformed MZL(tMZL): six from nodal MZL (tNMZL) and two from splenic MZL (tSMZL). We found >20% del(20q12) in 4/6 tNMZL, but not in tSM
