Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B Streptococcus, is an aetiological agent of urinary tract infection (UTI) in adults, including cystitis, pyelonephritis and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). Whereas ABU-causing S. agalactiae (ABSA) have been shown to grow and achieve higher culture denstity in human urine compared to uropathogenic S. agalactiae (UPSA) other phenotypic distinctions between S. agalactiae isolated from different forms of UTI are not known. Here, we define the hemolytic activities and biofilm-formation of a collection of clinical isolates of UPSA, ABSA and recurrent S.

Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis), which could cause human disease and death by consuming the contaminated food, is an important zoonotic pathogen. With the rapid increase of antibiotic resistance all over the world, bacteriophage-based bio-control has gradually attracted public attention widely. In order to find a suitable phage treating S. Enteritidis infection, four phages infecting S. Enteritidis were isolated from poultry fecal samples. Host range showed that four phages had a broad-host-range to Salmonella isolates. The morphological analysis illustrated that all of those phages we

Escherichia coli O78: K80 strains isolated from an outbreak of meningitis, sepsis and enteritis in infants, were compared with O78: K80 strains from sporadic cases of enteritis, healthy carriers and animals. The strains were uniform in antigenic structure and phage pattern but differed in colicinogenicity. The epidemic strains and calf-pathogenic cultures produced colicin V, the remaining isolates were characterized by other types of colicin or were not colicinogenic. Col V+ strains multiplied in the mouse peritoneal cavity more readily and killed the animals at significantly lower doses than

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) infections are associated with major economic losses, cause perihepatitis, pericarditis, septicemia and even systemic infections in the poultry industry. APEC infections have usually been controlled by antibiotics, resulting in an increased prevalence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli. Concerns have been increased that transfer of antibiotic-resistant APEC via the food chain may cause risks for extra-intestinal infection of humans related to zoonotic transfer and increased difficulties in the treatment of human infections caused APEC-related E. coli types

BACKGROUND: Pelagic Sargassum has undergone significant range expansion and dramatic blooms in the Atlantic over the past 15 years. This alga's microbiome provides symbiotic functions that are believed to contribute to its ecological success. Recent research shows that Sargassum-associated bacteria are enriched in integrated prophages compared to the surrounding seawater and that these prophages are inducible by chemical and ultraviolet treatment.
RESULTS: Here, we investigated a Sargassum-derived in vitro multispecies biofilm encompassing the dominant heterotrophic microbial members associat

This study focuses on the isolation, identification, and characterization of Enterococcus faecalis strain Ef-01 and the bacteriophage vB_EfS_L1 targeting it. E. faecalis was isolated from hospital laboratory samples and confirmed through PCR analysis, yielding a 1466 bp sequence with high homology to E. faecalis ATCC 19433. Antibiotic sensitivity testing revealed that Ef-01 was susceptible to six antibiotics including ciprofloxacin and linezolid, intermediately susceptible to four, and resistant to five antibiotics such as penicillin and cefradine. Subsequently, bacteriophage vB_EfS_L1 was iso

Salmonella enterica is a foodborne pathogen associated with both typhoid and non-typhoid illness in humans and animals. This problem is further exacerbated by the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella enterica. Therefore, to meet public health and safety, there is a need for an alternative strategy to tackle antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Bacteriophages or (bacterial viruses), due to their specificity, self-dosing, and antibiofilm activity, serve as a better approach to fighting against drug-resistant bacteria. In the current study, a broad-host range lytic phage phiSalP219 w

The alarming findings presented in the latest WHO report on the global antimicrobial resistance crisis have redirected scientific attention toward phage-based approaches as a renewed line of defense against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. In this study, four bacteriophages infecting a MDR-Escherichia coli strain were isolated from water sources and subjected to detailed phenotypic and genomic characterization. All phages efficiently inhibited MDR-E. coli at MOIs of 0.1 and 0.01, showing high stability across a broad temperature (4–65 °C) and pH (4–10) range. TEM analysis revealed that all

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is a major opportunistic pathogen associated with dairy production systems, where it contributes to intramammary infections and may enter the food chain through contaminated milk. The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant strains underscores the need for alternative biocontrol strategies. Here, we report the isolation and comprehensive characterization of a novel lytic bacteriophage, vB_SauP-INT105, obtained from wastewater in Extremadura, Spain.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Plaque morphology revealed a distinctive three-zone halo pattern suggestive of p

Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) is frequently detected in the food supply chain, particularly in meat and fresh produce. It carries antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors, which pose significant risks to food safety and public health. Phages are considered a promising natural antimicrobial agent capable of effectively eliminating multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. However, the application of phages to control MDR P. mirabilis in the food supply chain remains relatively limited. In this study, the P. mirabilis isolate carried seven virulence factors, one class 1 integron, a

Foodborne diseases caused by Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) pose a serious threat to public health. Phages offer a promising biocontrol strategy, but phage resources targeting B. cereus remain limited. In this study, a novel lytic phage, WAH1, was isolated from sewage using a multidrug-resistant B. cereus strain as the host. Morphological analysis revealed that WAH1 possesses an icosahedral head and a long, contractile tail. WAH1 exhibits a broad host range, lysing 33 out of 51 (64.7%) B. cereus strains covering 17 sequence types (STs), as determined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The phag

Temperate bacteriophages are increasingly recognized as important drivers of microbial evolution. However, their role in mediating competition among members of the same species during infection remains poorly defined. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa), an opportunistic pathogen associated with acute and chronic infections, frequently exhibits clonal dominance within infected individuals, suggesting the existence of effective mechanisms for excluding conspecific competitors. Here, we investigate the contribution of temperate bacteriophages to intraspecies competition among clinical Pa isolates. Scree

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) wound infections remain a major clinical challenge due to antibiotic resistance and biofilm persistence. Although phage therapy has re-emerged as a promising alternative, its efficacy is limited by poor stratum corneum penetration following conventional topical application. Here, we isolated and characterized a lytic MRSA phage, Pelagios, and evaluated its transdermal delivery using detachable dissolvable microneedles (DDMNs). Genomic analyses classified Pelagios within the genus Silviavirus of the family Herelleviridae and indicated that it m

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent bacterial diseases associated with serious health complications, particularly those caused by antibiotic resistant Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Antibiotic resistant UPEC infections present significant treatment challenges due to multiple pathogenic factors and resistance mechanisms to various antibiotics. Consequently, bacteriophages have emerged as a promising alternative for controlling antibiotic resistant bacterial infection. In this study, a virulent phage (vB_Eco_ZCEC02) was isolated and characterized on both the phys

Salmonella enterica is a major public health concern due to its widespread contamination of food products and the increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains. Bacteriophage-based biocontrol has emerged as a safe and effective alternative to conventional antibiotics. Here, we isolated and characterized the broad-spectrum lytic phage vB_SgulP_SP124, which lysed 81.08% of 148 tested Salmonella strains across five clinically important serotypes: S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, S. Pullorum, S. Choleraesuis, and S. Dublin. The phage exhibited high viability across a pH range of 2-10 and tem

Surfaces contaminated with enveloped viruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and influenza virus, can potentially spread illness via hand contact. Often, the efficacy of hand hygiene interventions relies on virus recovery from hands. However, the recovery of bacteriophage phi6 (Φ6), a recommended surrogate for enveloped viruses, from the entire hands using the ASTM E2011-21 standard has not been optimized. For Φ6 recovery from the hands, three eluents [lysogeny broth (LC), tryptic soy broth (TSB), and 1.5% beef extract (BE)] and three recovery methods [glove juice meth

Most bacteria are polylysogens that carry multiple prophages integrated into the chromosome. These prophages confer advantages to their bacterial host, yet also pose a lethal threat as they can reactivate and enter a lytic cycle. DNA damage of the bacterial host is a common trigger of prophage lytic cycles. Because DNA damage is frequently experienced by bacterial pathogens exposed to host immune defenses, prophage activation may be common during infection. Investigating the consequences of prophage induction in Salmonella, we discover a prophage competition element in the Gifsy-1 prophage tha

A gene library constructed from large (approximately 20 kb) fragments of total DNA from the geldananmycin-producing strain Streptomyces hygroscopicus 3602 cloned in the plasmid vector pIJ61 were used to transform S. lividans TK24. Three transformants of about 800 tested were found to have acquired the ability to produce an antibiotic lethal to a geldanamycin-sensitive strain of Bacillus subtilis. The plasmids isolated from these transformants, pIA101, pIA102 and pIA103, each contained an insert of approximately 15 kb. A 4.5 kb DNA fragment from the insert in pIA102 hybridised to DNA from S. hy

Since the discovery of the first Listeria bacteriophage by Schultz in 1945, more than 219 phages were isolated for L. monocytogenes, L. invanovii, L. innocua, L. seeligeri and L. welshimeri. To date, no phage for L. murrayi and L. grayi is described in the literature. Unless two phages found by Jasińska in a water sample, all the other phages, when the origin is mentioned, were isolated from lysogenic strains, with or without induction. Electron microscopic examination of 55 Listeria phages revealed that two L. innocua phages belonged to the Myoviridae family (tail with contractile sheath) whe
