An event-based magnetoencephalography study of simulated driving: Establishing a novel paradigm to probe the dynamic interplay of executive and motor function.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is particularly well-suited to the study of human motor cortex oscillatory rhythms and motor control. However, the motor tasks studied to date are largely overly simplistic. This study describes a new approach: a novel event-based simulated drive made operational via MEG compatible driving simulator hardware, paired with differential beamformer methods to characterize the neural correlates of realistic, complex motor activity. We scanned 23 healthy individuals aged 16-23 years (mean age = 19.5, SD = 2.5; 18 males and 5 females, all right-handed) who completed a cus

Electrophysiological signatures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reflect frequency-specific alterations in large scale cortical coordination during resting state magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is increasingly conceptualized as involving stress-related alterations in large-scale neural systems supporting memory-related processes, alongside broader cognitive and emotional regulation. The present study examined resting-state, frequency-specific oscillatory activity and functional connectivity in PTSD using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Guided by the tri-network model, we tested whether PTSD would be associated with altered cortical oscillatory dynamics and reduced synchrony within and between the default mode, salience, and central executive network

Connectivity alteration in thalamic nuclei and default mode network-related area in memory processes in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy using magnetoencephalography.

This work aimed to investigate the involvement of the thalamic nuclei in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and identify the influence of interictal epileptic discharges on the neural basis of memory processing by evaluating the functional connectivity (FC) between the thalamic nuclei and default mode network-related area (DMNRA) using magnetoencephalography. Preoperative datasets of nine patients with MTLE with seizure-free status after surgery and those of nine healthy controls were analyzed. The FC between the thalamic nuclei (anterior nucleus [ANT], mediodorsal nucleus [MD], intralaminar

Resting-state magnetoencephalography source magnitude imaging with deep-learning neural network for classification of symptomatic combat-related mild traumatic brain injury.

Combat-related mild traumatic brain injury (cmTBI) is a leading cause of sustained physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disabilities in Veterans and active-duty military personnel. Accurate diagnosis of cmTBI is challenging since the symptom spectrum is broad and conventional neuroimaging techniques are insensitive to the underlying neuropathology. The present study developed a novel deep-learning neural network method, 3D-MEGNET, and applied it to resting-state magnetoencephalography (rs-MEG) source-magnitude imaging data from 59 symptomatic cmTBI individuals and 42 combat-deployed

The association of magnetoencephalography high-frequency oscillations with epilepsy types and a ripple-based method with source-level connectivity for mapping epilepsy sources.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) and epilepsy types and to improve the accuracy of source localization. METHODS: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) ripples of 63 drug-resistant epilepsy patients were detected. Ripple rates, distribution, spatial complexity, and the clustering coefficient of ripple channels were used for the preliminary classification of lateral temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE), mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), and nontemporal lobe epilepsy (NTLE), mainly frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Furthermore, the seizure site identification was i

Amyloid-β deposition predicts oscillatory slowing of magnetoencephalography signals and a reduction of functional connectivity over time in cognitively unimpaired adults.

With the ongoing developments in the field of anti-amyloid therapy for Alzheimer's disease, it is crucial to better understand the longitudinal associations between amyloid-β deposition and altered network activity in the living human brain. We included 110 cognitively unimpaired individuals (67.9 ± 5.7 years), who underwent [18F]flutemetamol (amyloid-β)-PET imaging and resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording at baseline and 4-year follow-up. We tested associations between baseline amyloid-β deposition and MEG measures (oscillatory power and functional connectivity). Next, we exam

BDNF Val66Met Polymorphism and Gamma Band Disruption in Resting State Brain Functional Connectivity: A Magnetoencephalography Study in Cognitively Intact Older Females.

The pathophysiological processes undermining brain functioning decades before the onset of the clinical symptoms associated with dementia are still not well understood. Several heritability studies have reported that the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Val66Met genetic polymorphism could contribute to the acceleration of cognitive decline in aging. This mutation may affect brain functional connectivity (FC), especially in those who are carriers of the BDNF Met allele. The aim of this work was to explore the influence of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism in whole brain eyes-closed, restin

Altered activity of the primary visual area during gaze processing in individuals with high-functioning autistic spectrum disorder: a magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate an impaired ability to infer the mental states of others from their gaze. Thus, investigating the relationship between ASD and eye gaze processing is crucial for understanding the neural basis of social impairments seen in individuals with ASD. In addition, characteristics of ASD are observed in more comprehensive visual perception tasks. These visual characteristics of ASD have been well-explained in terms of the atypical relationship between high- and low-level gaze processing in ASD. METHOD: We studied neural activit

Dissociated expressive and receptive language functions on magnetoencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and amobarbital studies. Case report and review of the literature.

Dissociated language functions are largely invalidated by standard techniques such as the amobarbital test and cortical stimulation. Language studies in which magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance (fMR) imaging are used to record data while the patient performs lexicosemantic tasks have enabled researchers to perform independent brain mapping for temporal and frontal language functions (MEG is used for temporal and fMR imaging for frontal functions). In this case report, the authors describe a right-handed patient in whom a right-sided insular glioma was diagnosed. The

An individual data-driven virtual resection model based on epileptic network dynamics in children with intractable epilepsy: a magnetoencephalography interictal activity application.

Epilepsy surgery continues to be a recommended treatment for intractable (medication-resistant) epilepsy; however, 30-70% of epilepsy surgery patients can continue to have seizures. Surgical failures are often associated with incomplete resection or inaccurate localization of the epileptogenic zone. This retrospective study aims to improve surgical outcome through in silico testing of surgical hypotheses through a personalized computational neurosurgery model created from individualized patient's magnetoencephalography recording and MRI. The framework assesses the extent of the epileptic netwo

Ketamine Dysregulates the Amplitude and Connectivity of High-Frequency Oscillations in Cortical-Subcortical Networks in Humans: Evidence From Resting-State Magnetoencephalography-Recordings.

Hypofunctioning of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) has been prominently implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (ScZ). The current study tested the effects of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic and NMDA-R antagonist, on resting-state activity recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) in healthy volunteers. In a single-blind cross-over design, each participant (n = 12) received, on 2 different sessions, a subanesthetic dose of S-ketamine (0.006 mg/Kg) and saline injection. MEG-data were analyzed at sensor- and source-level in the beta (13-30 Hz) and gamma (30-90 Hz) freq

Restoration of altered somatosensory cortical representation with spinal cord stimulation therapy in a patient with complex regional pain syndrome: a magnetoencephalography case study.

OBJECTIVES: Development of effective chronic pain treatment strategies has been hampered by the lack of an objective pain biomarker. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has demonstrated cortical disorganization corresponding to the affected limb of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) patients and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) can acutely treat CRPS in a reversible and adjustable fashion. In order to better define a potential MEG-sensitive biomarker for chronic pain, our goal was to study the effects of therapeutic SCS on cortical disorganization in patients with unilateral limb CRPS. METHODS: Two

Successful declarative memory formation is associated with ongoing activity during encoding in a distributed neocortical network related to working memory: a magnetoencephalography study.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the spatio-temporal characteristics of the neural correlates of declarative memory formation as assessed by the subsequent memory effect, i.e. the difference in encoding activity between subsequently remembered and subsequently forgotten items. Different operations could account for these effects. In particular, it has been proposed that successful memory formation depends on the organization of the information at the time of encoding, an operation accomplished by the working memory system. Consequently, functional magnetic resonance imaging stud

Frequency-specific network changes in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy: Analysis of chronic and transient dysfunctions in the temporo-amygdala-orbitofrontal network using magnetoencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is associated with disruptions in the temporo-amygdala-orbitofrontal (TAO) network, a key component of the limbic system. We aimed to investigate TAO network alterations in patients with MTLE using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which overcomes susceptibility artifacts that limit functional MRI analysis of the orbitofrontal cortex. METHODS: Nine seizure-free patients with MTLE post-temporal lobectomy and nine age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Preoperative MEG data were collected and segmented into frequency bands ranging from

Decoding kinematic information from beta-band motor rhythms of speech motor cortex: a methodological/analytic approach using concurrent speech movement tracking and magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: Articulography and functional neuroimaging are two major tools for studying the neurobiology of speech production. Until now, however, it has generally not been feasible to use both in the same experimental setup because of technical incompatibilities between the two methodologies. METHODS: Here we describe results from a novel articulography system dubbed Magneto-articulography for the Assessment of Speech Kinematics (MASK), which is technically compatible with magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain scanning systems. In the present paper we describe our methodological and analytic

Surgical planning, histopathology findings and postoperative outcome in MR-negative extra-temporal epilepsy using intracranial EEG, functional imaging, magnetoencephalography, neuronavigation and intraoperative MRI.

OBJECTIVE: MRI-negative drug-resistant epilepsy presents a challenge when it comes to surgical planning, and surgical outcome is worse than in cases with an identified lesion. Although increasing implementation of more powerful MRI scanners and artificial intelligence has led to the detection of previously unrecognizable lesions, in some cases even postoperative pathological evaluation of electrographically epileptogenic zones shows no structural alterations. While in temporal lobe epilepsy a standardized resection approach can usually be performed, the surgical management of extra-temporal le

Localization of beta power decrease as measure for lateralization in pre-surgical language mapping with magnetoencephalography, compared with functional magnetic resonance imaging and validated by Wada test.

Objective: Atypical patterns of language lateralization due to early reorganizational processes constitute a challenge in the pre-surgical evaluation of patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy. There is no consensus on an optimal analysis method used for the identification of language dominance in MEG. This study examines the concordance between MEG source localization of beta power desynchronization and fMRI with regard to lateralization and localization of expressive and receptive language areas using a visual verb generation task. Methods: Twenty-five patients with pharmaco-resistant epil
