Improving the antenatal and post-partum management of women presenting to Sexual Health Services with positive syphilis serology through audit.

The incidence of congenital syphilis remains low in the UK, but the morbidity and mortality to babies born to women who are untreated for the condition make testing for the disease antenatally one of the most cost-effective screening programmes. Women attending North Middlesex Hospital, UK with a positive syphilis test at their antenatal booking visit are referred to St Ann's Sexual Health Clinic, London, for management and contact tracing. We were concerned that our initial audit revealed that a large proportion of women referred to our service never attended and recorded partner notification

Interventional pathway in the management of refractory post cholecystectomy pain (PCP) syndrome: a 6-year prospective audit in 60 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Post cholecystectomy pain syndrome can affect over a third of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Acute exacerbations can result in recurrent emergency admission with excessive healthcare utilization. Standard surgical management appears to focus on visceral aetiology. Abdominal myofascial pain syndrome is a poorly recognised somatic pathology that can cause refractory pain in this cohort. It develops as a result of trigger points in the abdominal musculature. The report describes the pathophysiology and a novel interventional pathway in the management of post cholecy

A retrospective audit of pain assessment and management post-caesarean section at New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The most common major surgical procedure performed worldwide is the caesarean section (CS). Effective pain management is a priority for women undergoing this procedure, to reduce the incidence of persistent pain (a risk factor for postpartum depression), as well as optimise maternal-neonatal bonding and the successful establishment of breastfeeding. Multimodal analgesia is the gold standard for post-CS analgesia. At present, no perioperative pain management protocols could be identified for the management of patients presenting for CS at regional hospitals in South Africa. This aud

Using Criteria-Based Audit to Improve the Management of Postpartum Haemorrhage in a University Hospital in Eastern Ethiopia: A Before and After Study.

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum haemorrhage, an excessive bleeding after childbirth, remains a leading cause of maternal mortality in low-resource settings. Improving the quality of postpartum haemorrhage care using audit and embedded quality improvement is essential for addressing this. A criteria-based audit, an objective, systematic and critical analysis of the quality of health care against a set of criteria, is essential for identifying appropriateness of care and areas for improvement in postpartum haemorrhage management. The aim of this study was to audit management of postpartum haemorrhage as

Optimized scoring of end-to-end dosimetry audits for passive motion management - A simulation study using the IROC thorax phantom.

Dosimetry audits for passive motion management require dynamically-acquired measurements in a moving phantom to be compared to statically calculated planned doses. This study aimed to characterise the relationship between planning and delivery errors, and the measured dose in the Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) thorax phantom, to assess different audit scoring approaches. Treatment plans were created using a 4DCT scan of the IROC phantom, equipped with film and thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs). Plans were created on the average intensity projection from all bins. Three levels of

Peri-operative cardiac arrest: management and outcomes of patients analysed in the 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

The 7th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists studied peri-operative cardiac arrest in the UK, a topic of importance to patients, anaesthetists and surgeons. We report the results of the 12-month registry phase, from 16 June 2021 to 15 June 2022, focusing on management and outcomes. Among 881 cases of peri-operative cardiac arrest, the initial rhythm was non-shockable in 723 (82%) cases, most commonly pulseless electrical activity. There were 665 (75%) patients who survived the initial event and 384 (52%) who survived to hospital discharge. A favourable functional outcom

Current Clinical Practice for the Use of Hypnotics to Manage Primary Insomnia in Adults in a Tertiary Hospital in Saudi Arabia: An Audit Study.

Despite the risks associated with hypnotics and their recent increased use in Saudi Arabia, there are no specific national guidelines for using these medicines to treat insomnia nor are there any data on how these medicines are currently prescribed. There is the potential, however, that some physicians might be adhering to the United States guidelines. The current audit study was aimed to assess the current practice in treating insomnia with hypnotics in Saudi Arabia, and to evaluate its agreement with the US guidelines. The audit was conducted using data collected between April 2012 and March

Retrospective review of the management of epididymo-orchitis in a London-based level 3 sexual health clinic: an audit of clinical practice.

The aetiology of epididymo-orchitis is largely related to a patient's age with sexually transmitted pathogens being the common aetiological agents in those below 35 years of age. In individuals aged over 35, uropathogens represent the commonest cause. National guidelines exist for the appropriate management of this condition and its varying aetiology. We aimed to assess the management of epididymo-orchitis in our clinic with reference to the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV national guidelines. We describe the demographics, investigations, treatment and outcomes of patients presen

Prospective audit on the use of the LMA-Supreme for airway management of adult patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery in prone position.

BACKGROUND: The LMA-Supreme (SLMA) is a single-use, latex-free, supraglottic airway device with a drain tube which allows immediate assessment of correct positioning of the device at insertion and throughout the procedure and provides access to gastric contents. The anatomically shaped airway tube facilitates easy insertion in anaesthetized patients in the supine, lateral, and prone positions. We present a prospective audit in 205 consecutive adult patients presenting for elective spine surgery in the prone position. Patients positioned themselves in the prone position, on a Montreal or Wilson

Heterogeneity of clinical management of low-grade gastric lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. An audit of 198 patients in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Cure of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with gastric lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) leads to long-term clinical remission in the initial stages. As it is a rare disease, its management in clinical practice remains largely unknown and heterogeneity of care remains a concern. The aim was to audit the management and evolution of a large series of low-grade gastric MALT lymphomas from thirteen Spanish hospitals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multicentre retrospective study including data on the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with gastric low-grade MALT
