The i-view® Video Laryngoscope Compared With the Macintosh Laryngoscope Does Not Enhance the Endotracheal Intubation Skills of Dental Students.

Background A disposable i-view® video laryngoscope (Intersurgical Limited, Berkshire, United Kingdom) is yet to be used to educate medical and dental students, who must learn endotracheal intubation skills. Additionally, the advantage of the i-view® use for the purpose, compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope, is unknown. We aimed to first determine whether the i-view® video laryngoscope enhances endotracheal intubation skills among dental students compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope. Methodology A prospective, observational, simulation study was conducted among 67 dental students in the

Adaptive ventilation based on cough detection and localization for airborne infection control in vehicles.

Cough-generated pathogen-laden aerosols can lead to airborne transmission of infectious diseases inside vehicle cabins, where occupants share a confined space. Ventilation is the most effective approach for mitigating the risk of airborne infections in vehicles. However, the effectiveness of ventilation strongly depends on the location of the index occupant. To enhance airborne infection control, this study developed an adaptive ventilation method that detects and localizes the coughing occupant and adjusts the airflow distribution of the cabin ventilation system accordingly. A system integrat

A Reproducible Peritonsillar Abscess Incision and Drainage Model for Junior Trainees.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the design and construction of a reproducible, low-cost, peritonsillar abscess (PTA) incision and drainage simulator and assess its impact on trainees' confidence. METHODS: The 2-part simulator we developed consisted of a manikin head with a fixed, partially open mouth and a modular PTA mold. The mold is created by injecting a lotion and water mixture into plastic bubbles, followed by silicone solidification. Neodymium magnets secure the silicone-abscess packet to the manikin's palate. The simulator was utilized during an academic otolaryngology residency training prog

Development and Evaluation of Two Canine Low-Fidelity Simulation Models.

Two self-made low-fidelity models for simulation of canine intubation and canine female urinary catheterization were developed and evaluated. We used a study design that compares acquired skills of two intervention groups and one control group in a practical examination. Fifty-eight second-year veterinary medicine students received a theoretical introduction to intubation and were randomly divided into three groups. Group I (high-fidelity) was then trained on a commercially available Intubation Training Manikin (item #2006, Veteffects), group II (low-fidelity) was trained on our low-fidelity m

Digital human modeling for occupational health of rice mill workers in manual materials handling.

BackgroundHeavy loads are carried out manually by rice mill workers, which causes a considerably high compressive force on the spine, particularly in the L4-L5 region.ObjectiveTo assess the posture and discomfort experienced by the rice mill workers in manual materials handling (MMH) tasks. To estimate the moment and back compressive force (BCF) at L4-L5 using digital human modeling (DHM).MethodsThe posture of 12 males was measured for three MMH tasks and three modes of load carrying. The measured posture was analyzed using the Kinovea software. A manikin was developed using CATIA software to

Numerical investigation of the convective heat transfer coefficient for a sleeping infant in a ventilation room.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of wind speed and direction on the convective heat transfer from a sleeping infant in different postures. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a virtual infant manikin with realistic dimensions was developed to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient (hc ) at the body surface and the airflow and temperature distributions. The numerical model was validated beforehand using experimental data collected from infant thermal manikin experiments. The simulation results revealed that the infant's whole-body hc increased from 4.00 to 15.73

Levels of agreement between student and staff assessments of clinical skills in performing cavity preparation in artificial teeth.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of agreement between staff and students' assessment of clinical skills in performing tasks related to cavity preparation on a traditional dental manikin. METHODS: Two studies were conducted with two successive student cohorts: Study 1-138 year 1 BDS students in a 2009/10 cohort and Study 2-135 students in a 2010/11 cohort. Staff members and students rated the students' performance in preparing a cavity on a traditional dental manikin using artificial teeth: hand-held (Study 1) and located in a lower jaw (Study 2). A 5-item criterion-related scoring rubric was

Viewing another person's body as a target object: a behavioural and PET study of pointing.

Humans usually point at objects to communicate with other persons, although they generally avoid pointing at the other's body. Moreover, patients with heterotopagnosia after left parietal damage cannot point at another person's body parts, although they can point at objects and at their own body parts and although they can grasp the others' body parts. Strikingly, their performance gradually improves for figurative human body targets. Altogether, this suggests that the body of another real person holds a specific status in communicative pointing. Here, we test in healthy individuals whether pe

Reduced hands-off-time and time to first shock in CPR according to the ERC Guidelines 2005.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Chest compressions and early defibrillation are crucial in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The Guidelines 2005 brought major changes to the basic life support and automated external defibrillator (BLS-AED) algorithm. We compared the European Resuscitation Council's Guidelines 2000 (group '00) and 2005 (group '05) on hands-off-time (HOT) and time to first shock (TTFS) in an experimental model. METHODS: In a randomised, cross-over design, volunteers were assessed in performing BLS-AED over a period of 5min on a manikin in a simulated ventricular fibrillation cardiac arr

Creation and Delphi-method refinement of pediatric disaster triage simulations.

OBJECTIVE: There is a need for rigorously designed pediatric disaster triage (PDT) training simulations for paramedics. First, we sought to design three multiple patient incidents for EMS provider training simulations. Our second objective was to determine the appropriate interventions and triage level for each victim in each of the simulations and develop evaluation instruments for each simulation. The final objective was to ensure that each simulation and evaluation tool was free of bias toward any specific PDT strategy. METHODS: We created mixed-methods disaster simulation scenarios with p

Simulation in Anesthesia for Perioperative Neuroscience: Present and Future.

The brain's sensitivity to fluctuations in physiological parameters demands precise control of anesthesia during neurosurgery, which, combined with the complex nature of neurosurgical procedures and potential for adverse outcomes, makes neuroanesthesia challenging. Neuroanesthesiologists, as perioperative physicians, work closely with neurosurgeons, neurologists, neurointensivists, and neuroradiologists to provide care for patients with complex neurological diseases, often dealing with life-threatening conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, cerebral aneurysms, and spinal co

[A neuropsychological and functional brain imaging study of visuo-imitative apraxia].

We describe the case of a 58-years-old right-handed women suffering from an occipital-parietal lesion. The administration of a cognitively based assessment tool for limb praxis (Batterie d'Evaluation des Praxies, B.E.P., Peigneux and Van der Linden, 1998) demonstrated bilateral visuo-imitative apraxia. Gesture production was mainly characterised by spatial, errors, and imitation of meaningful gestures was worse than their pantomime on verbal command. Moreover, the imitation of meaningless gestures and their reproduction on a manikin were worse than imitation of their matched meaningful gesture

[Bus drivers' biomechanical risk assessment in two different contexts].

The application of standardize methods for the biomechanical risk assessment in non-industrial cycled activity is not always possible. A typical case is the public transport sector, where workers complain of suffering for shoulder more than elbow and wrist pains. The Authors present the results of two studies involving two public transport companies and the risk of biomechanical overload of upper limbs for bus and tram drivers. The analysis has been made using three different approaches: focus groups; static analysis by using anthropometric manikins; work sampling technique by monitoring worke

Management of complicated second stage of labour in stillbirths: a review of the literature and lessons learnt from two cases in the UK.

The stillbirth rate for singletons in the UK is approximately 5.3/1,000 births/year. Macrosomic babies are associated with obstructed labour and shoulder dystocia. Some 3.3% of stillborns weigh over 4 kg, when such problems are likely to be encountered. In developed countries, caesarean section is regarded as being more civilised than destructive operations for obstructed labour prior to full cervical dilatation in an interuterine death. However, when the cervix is fully dilated or severe shoulder dystocia is encountered, fetal destructive operations have half the maternal mortality rate of th

Ideomotor apraxia and cerebral dominance for motor control.

Ideomotor apraxia is a symptom of left hemisphere damage. Patients with ideomotor apraxia commit errors when imitating movements with their left, non-paralyzed hand. This has been taken as evidence for a motor dominance of the left hemisphere. It has been hypothesized that the left hemisphere is dominant for internal preprogramming of skilled movements of either hand. We investigated the kinematics of movement trajectories of imitation of meaningless gestures. Group analysis confirmed that hesitant, feedback-controlled movement prevail in patients with apraxia, but analysis of single cases rev

Supraglottic airways in difficult airway management: successes, failures, use and misuse.

Supraglottic airway devices (SAD) play an important role in the management of patients with difficult airways. Unlike other alternatives to standard tracheal intubation, e.g. videolaryngoscopy or intubation stylets, they enable ventilation even in patients with difficult facemask ventilation and simultaneous use as a conduit for tracheal intubation. Insertion is usually atraumatic, their use is familiar from elective anaesthesia, and compared with tracheal intubation is easier to learn for users with limited experienced in airway management. Use of SADs during difficult airway management is wi

Learning garment manipulation policies toward robot-assisted dressing.

Assistive robots have the potential to support people with disabilities in a variety of activities of daily living, such as dressing. People who have completely lost their upper limb movement functionality may benefit from robot-assisted dressing, which involves complex deformable garment manipulation. Here, we report a dressing pipeline intended for these people and experimentally validate it on a medical training manikin. The pipeline is composed of the robot grasping a hospital gown hung on a rail, fully unfolding the gown, navigating around a bed, and lifting up the user's arms in sequence

Apneic laryngeal oxygenation during elective fiberoptic intubation - a technical simulation.

BACKGROUND: Sedation during elective fiberoptic intubation for difficult airway can cause respiratory depression, apnea and periods of desaturation. During apneic episodes, hypoxemia can be prevented by insufflation of oxygen in the deep laryngeal space. The aim of this study was to evaluate an oropharyngeal oxygenation device (OOD) designed for deep laryngeal insufflation during fiberoptic intubation. METHODS: The OOD is split in the front to form a path for the bronchoscope. An external lumen delivers oxygen in the deep laryngeal space. In this experimental study, air application (as contro

Neonatal head and torso vibration exposure during inter-hospital transfer.

Inter-hospital transport of premature infants is increasingly common, given the centralisation of neonatal intensive care. However, it is known to be associated with anomalously increased morbidity, most notably brain injury, and with increased mortality from multifactorial causes. Surprisingly, there have been relatively few previous studies investigating the levels of mechanical shock and vibration hazard present during this vehicular transport pathway. Using a custom inertial datalogger, and analysis software, we quantify vibration and linear head acceleration. Mounting multiple inertial se
