Nutrient losses from manure and fertilizer applications as impacted by time to first runoff event.

Nutrient losses to surface waters following fertilization contribute to eutrophication. This study was conducted to compare the impacts of fertilization with inorganic fertilizer, swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) manure or poultry (Gallus domesticus) litter on runoff water quality, and how the duration between application and the first runoff event affects resulting water quality. Fertilizers were applied at 35 kg P ha-1, and the duration between application and the first runoff event varied between 1 and 29 days. Swine manure was the greatest risk to water quality 1 day after fertilization due t

Phosphorus compounds in sequential extracts of animal manures: chemical speciation and a novel fractionation procedure.

Pollution of water bodies by phosphorus in runoff from soil amended with animal manures is one of the greatest threats to water quality in developed countries. The environmental fate of manure phosphorus is determined in part by its chemical composition, yet extraction procedures to assess this are poorly developed and provide no structural information. We used solution 31P NMR spectroscopy to quantify phosphorus compounds in sequential extracts of three contrasting manures (broiler litter, beef-cattle manure, swine manure). Using a procedure originally developed for soils, but commonly applie

Mixed seeding with sheep manure amendment alters soil nematode network complexity in a sandy grassland.

INTRODUCTION: Soil nematodes are key bioindicators of terrestrial ecosystem functions, yet how restoration practices affect their community and interactions remains unclear. METHODS: A one-year field experiment in an alpine grassland tested three treatments: bare sandy soil, mixed seeding of Avena sativa L. and Festuca arundinacea, and mixed seeding with sheep manure amendment at 1.75 kg m-². Notably, the experimental design did not include a sheep-manure-only treatment; therefore, the specific contribution of manure independent of vegetation reconstruction cannot be disentangled. RESULT: Hi

Vermiwash as microbial inoculant improved compost quality and functional microbial succession in chicken manure composting.

Chicken manure composting faces challenges of slow maturation and nutrient losses. This study evaluated vermiwash bioaugmentation applied at 1.5% v/w to the composting substrate; the vermiwash was derived from Eudrilus eugeniae cultivated on an 8:2 cow-to-chicken manure substrate (20% chicken manure in the earthworm cultivation medium) selected for optimal vermiwash production. Vermiwash treatment achieved substantial improvements in nutrient content (nitrogen: 4.66% vs. 1.86%; phosphorus: 0.737% vs. 0.281%; free amino acids: 4.04 vs. 1.12 mg/g), microbial activity (density: 9.0 × 10⁹ vs. 1.3

Using desulfurization wastewater to mitigate lime disinfectant inhibition and enhance anaerobic digestion of swine manure.

Biogas production from swine manure is hindered by excessive Ca2+ introduced through lime disinfectants, causing microbial inhibition and process instability. Meanwhile, NaOH-based alkaline solutions widely applied for biogas purification generate desulfurization wastewater enriched with carbonate ions. Leveraging this connection, this study proposes an integrated strategy that couples NaOH-based biogas upgrading with mitigation of lime-induced inhibition. CO2 removal via NaOH bubbling increased CH4 purity to 83.1 % at 80 g/L NaOH. The resulting desulfurization wastewater was subsequently reus

Mechanism of clay minerals in promoting organic matter sequestration and humification during chicken manure composting.

To accelerate the humification process and promote organic matter sequestration during aerobic composting, this work assessed how various clay minerals facilitate organic matter sequestration and humic acid synthesis in chicken manure composting. A composting trial was set up, including a control and three treatments incorporating montmorillonite , halloysite , and sepiolite , respectively. A water-permeable membrane encapsulation technique was employed to isolate the clay minerals from the composting feedstock in order to monitor their adsorption behavior towards organic matter. Montmorilloni

Characterization of extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Klebsiella recovered from dairy manure in Southern Ontario, Canada.

Extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC)-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae are a problem in human patients and have been studied extensively. However, there is a paucity of information regarding ESC-resistant K. pneumoniae from livestock in general, and in Canada in particular. This study characterized ESC-resistant K. pneumoniae recovered from dairy manure in Ontario, Canada, and their ESC-resistance plasmids. ESC-resistant K. pneumoniae (n = 73) and K. quasipneumoniae (n = 11) isolates were screened by PCR for blaCTX-M, blaCMY and blaSHV prior to undergoing antimicrobial susceptibility testing us

Reduced life cycle climate impact from manure through catalytic methane conversion and carbon dioxide removal.

Agri-food systems constitute around one-third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with roughly half consisting of non-CO2 GHGs, mainly methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Methods and technologies to mitigate non-CO2 GHGs are currently limited, which is a reason for agriculture being categorised as a hard-to-abate sector. This study examines mitigation of GHG emissions from manure storage headspace through oxidisation of CH4 emissions at low concentrations, using a thermal catalytic process with and without subsequent CO2 capture and storage (CCS). The technology is studied using a com

Effects of hydrothermal pretreatment on sulfadiazine degradation during two-stage anaerobic digestion of pig manure.

Antibiotics in animal manure pose significant risks to the environment and health. While anaerobic digestion (AD) is commonly used for pig manure treatment, its efficiency in antibiotic removal has been considerably limited. This study investigated the impact of hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) on sulfadiazine (SDZ) removal in a two-stage AD system. Results indicated that the HTP process reduced SDZ concentration by 40.61%. Furthermore, the SDZ removal efficiency of the AD system coupling HTP increased from 50.90% to 65.04% compared to the untreated system. Biogas yield was also improved by 26.

Optimization of pig manure-derived biochar for ammonium and phosphate simultaneous recovery from livestock wastewater.

Livestock wastewater has led to serious eco-environmental issues. To effectively treat livestock wastewater and realize the resource utilization of livestock solid waste, manure waste has been widely used to prepare biochar for the recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, fresh biochar has a poor ability to adsorb phosphate due to its negative charge. To overcome the defect, the proportion of biochar samples prepared at 400 °C and 700 °C was optimized under a mass ratio of 2:3 to obtain mixed biochar PM 4-7, achieving the purpose of enhanced ammonium and phosphate recovery in livestock wa

[Effect of Antibiotic-Degrading Bacteria on Maturity and Bacterial Community Succession During Pig Manure Composting].

The inoculation of antibiotic-degrading bacteria into manure could promote the removal of antibiotics during composting. However, knowledge on the impact of inoculating these antibiotic-degrading bacteria on the composting process and indigenous microbial community succession is still limited. This study assessed the antibiotic removal efficiency in pig manure after inoculating a microbial inoculum with antibiotic-degrading bacteria as the key component. The effect of inoculating this microbial inoculum on the physicochemical dynamics and the succession of the manure bacterial community during

Resource recovery for environmental management of dilute livestock manure using a solid-liquid separation approach.

Mechanical solid-liquid separation is an emerging closed-loop technology to recover and recycle carbon, nutrients and water from dilute livestock manure. This closed-loop concept is tested using a modular separation technology (Z-Filter) applied at full-scale for the first time to treat effluent from a pasture-based dairy. Effluent flow rates were 200-400 L min-1 at a total solids (TS) content of 0.52% (pH 7.2). Separation efficiency and composition of the separated solid fraction were determined, and chemically-assisted separation with cationic polymer flocculant with/without hydrated lime wa

Dispersion of Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) from stored swine manure biogas digestate to the atmosphere.

Biogas digestate is a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and could pose a high health risk to both human and animals if the host microorganisms of ARGs become aerosolized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diversity and relative abundance characteristics of aerosol-loaded ARGs from biogas digestate during storage, and to explore whether the change of ARGs in biogas digestate directly affect the dispersion of aerosol-loaded ARGs. This study reported for the first time that 28 of 42 ARG subtypes detected in the biogas digestate could be dispersed to the atmosphere via

Manure contamination with Clostridium botulinum after avian botulism outbreaks: management and potential risk of dissemination.

BACKGROUND: Persistence of Clostridium botulinum in the environment is well known. Getting rid of it after animal botulism outbreaks is so tricky, especially as far as manure concerns. This study aimed at 1. describing manure management on 10 poultry farms affected by botulism and 2. assessing the persistence of C botulinum in poultry manure after the outbreak. METHODS: Each farm was visited twice at two different manure storage times (two weeks after manure removal and two months later). Fifteen samples of manure were collected on each visit and C botulinum was detected using real-time PCR.

Dynamics of oxytetracycline, sulfamerazine, and ciprofloxacin and related antibiotic resistance genes during swine manure composting.

Understanding the dynamics of veterinary antibiotic and related antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during swine manure composting is crucial in assessing the environmental risk of antibiotics, which could effectively reduce their impact in natural environments. This study investigated the dissipation of oxytetracycline (OTC), sulfamerazine (SM1) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) as well as the behaviour of their corresponding ARGs during swine manure composting. These antibiotics were added at two concentration levels and two different methods of addition (single/mixture). The results indicated that the

An object-oriented Bayesian network approach for establishing swine manure-borne natural estrogenic compounds budget.

A facility-wide estrogen budget model was developed to assess the excretion of natural estrogens by swine in a commercial swine farrowing concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) in North Carolina, using an object-oriented Bayesian network (OOBN) approach. The OOBN model is the combination of twelve objects of Bayesian network models, which characterize the estrogen budget flows based on the sow reproductive cycle (i.e., pre-estrus, estrus, and lactation) for the three natural estrogen types [estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3)] within each barn. This OOBN model provides a
