Substance abuse and cerebral blood flow.

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: This paper reviews acute and chronic effects of drugs of abuse on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolism and their clinical significance. The most important source of information for the review is human research reports published in refereed journals. A few animal studies, book chapters, and abstracts that are especially relevant are also included. RESULTS: In humans, ethanol in small doses produces cerebral vasodilation; higher doses induce cerebral vasoconstriction. Chronic alcoholism is associated with reduced CBF and cerebral metabolism. Sedatives and antianxiety d

Modes of cannabis use, frequency of use, and cannabis use problems: A latent profile analysis of modes of cannabis use.

BACKGROUND: While studies have linked different modes of cannabis use (CU) with CU problems and consequences, they have typically focused on unique effects of individual modes. Few studies have examined more complex patterns (e.g., using multiple modes). Studies that have typically combine modes and frequency of use, making it impossible to determine whether differences between patterns of use result from differing modes or differing frequencies of use. METHODS: We used data from 338 sexual minority women and gender diverse individuals (18-25 years old) who used cannabis (populations at high

Admissions to substance use treatment facilities for cannabis use disorder, 2000-2017: Does legalization matter?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A growing number of US states have legalized marijuana use in the past decade. We examined if marijuana legalization is associated with increased marijuana-related admissions to substance use treatment facilities between 2000 and 2017. METHODS: Data from the Treatment Episode Data Set-Admissions were used to examine the relationship between marijuana-related admissions among adults aged ≥18 by year and legalization status (i.e., fully legalized, medical use only [partially legalized], and illegal) (N = 35,457,854). Using interaction analyses, we further examined whe

Use of psychoactive substances in three medical specialties: anaesthesia, medicine and surgery.

In order to determine the prevalence of psychoactive substance use in three specialty groupings, 1,624 questionnaires were sent to physicians in medicine, surgery and anaesthesia; all had trained at the same academic institution. A response rate of 57.8% was achieved. Comparison of prevalence of impairment rates showed no differences between Surgery (14.4%), Medicine (19.9%) and Anaesthesia (16.8%). Substance abuse was clearly associated with a family history of abuse; 32.1% of the abusers had a family history of such abuse compared with 11.7% of the non-abusers. Increased stress at various ca

Platelet adenylyl cyclase activity as a state or trait marker in alcohol dependence: results of the WHO/ISBRA Study on State and Trait Markers of Alcohol Use and Dependence.

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable interest in identifying biochemical markers indicative of a genetic predisposition to alcohol dependence ("trait markers"), as well as biochemical markers of recent alcohol drinking ("state markers"). Platelet adenylyl cyclase activity has been suggested as a trait and/or as a state marker related to alcohol dependence. We have now measured platelet adenylyl cyclase activity in more than 1400 well-characterized subjects, which allows us to investigate the influence of a broad range of factors on this activity. METHODS: Subjects were recruited as part of

Comorbidity between depressive symptoms and substance use in-patients hospitalized for non-psychiatric diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies have shown a high prevalence and concurrence between depression and substance use. This is known as "dual diagnosis" and is associated with a worse prognosis for patients. OBJECTIVE: To establish the comorbidity between depressive symptoms and substance abuse in patients admitted with acute or chronic diseases to a public hospital. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study of prevalence which included 296 patients aged 18 to 65, to whom the PHQ-9 and ASSIST 3.0 scales were applied to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and substance abuse

Attitudes held by members of the clergy about alcohol.

Alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse continue to cause major threats to the physiological, psychological, sociological and spiritual health of the nation. According to recent statistics, over 80% of the illegal drugs used by youth, both male and female, is marijuana, with cocaine, opium and their derivatives comprising at least 15% of the drugs used by youth. When considering the ill effects of drug abuse, it is the legal one, alcohol that is responsible for the greatest impact on society. While it remains imperative that allied health professionals understand the many ramifications of substa

Panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia: associations with substance use, abuse, and dependence.

Anxiety and substance use disorders frequently co-occur. Despite the clinical importance of this co-occurrence, theory and research addressing the relations between anxiety-substance use disorder comorbidity remain limited. The present commentary is intended to briefly review and summarize key aspects of this literature, with a specific focus on panic-spectrum psychopathology (panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia) and its associations with tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use, abuse, and dependence. A heuristic theoretical model for better understanding the panic-substance use relatio

Self-reports by alcohol and drug abuse inpatients: factors affecting reliability and validity.

The reliability and validity of self-report data regarding substance abuse has often been questioned. To determine how best to enhance the veracity of self-report, three factors which might affect self-report veracity were examined: alcohol status at time of interview; level of cognitive functioning; and method of self-report data collection. Subjects were 234 admissions to an inpatient substance abuse treatment unit. Self-report data were collected via both personal interview on the day of admission and and questionnaire within the first week of stay. Self-reports concerned use of alcohol, co

Pharmacokinetic Drug Interactions with Tobacco, Cannabinoids and Smoking Cessation Products.

Tobacco smoke contains a large number of compounds in the form of metals, volatile gases and insoluble particles, as well as nicotine, a highly addictive alkaloid. Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug of abuse in the world, with a significant increase in the USA due to the increasing number of states that allow medical and recreational use. Of the over 70 phytocannabinoids in marijuana, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannibinol are the three main constituents. Both marijuana and tobacco smoking induce cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2 through activation of the aromati

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

PURPOSE: As society has seen an increase in rates of cannabis abuse, largely related to an increase in legalization of the substance, a new clinical condition deemed cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome has been recognized. This syndrome of idiopathic etiology is stimulated from chronic marijuana usage and produces cyclic episodes of nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain often alleviated with compulsive hot water bathing. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 42-year-old woman with a medical history of hypertension and myasthenia gravis was admitted to the authors' institution with a mandibular fracture. RESUL

The effects of drug abuse on pregnancy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present article is an update on the effects of drug abuse on pregnancy outcome. RECENT FINDINGS: Substance abuse in pregnancy is on the increase worldwide. Simultaneously, there is great variability in prevalence rates in different countries, regions of countries and in different ethnic groups. In the United States nearly 90% of drug-abusing women are of reproductive age. Substances most commonly abused in pregnancy include cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, marijuana, ethanol, tobacco, caffeine, and toluene-based solvents. Polysubstance abuse is very common. SUMMARY: Sub

Characteristics of Northern Plains American Indians seeking substance abuse treatment in an urban, non-tribal clinic: a descriptive study.

Because few data exist on substance abuse rates in American Indian (AI) communities, the Methamphetamine and Other Drug project was developed and implemented by five nodes within the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network (NIDA CTN). This article presents findings from AI clients in a Northern Plains urban non-Native substance abuse treatment setting. Alcohol and marijuana were used earlier, longer, and by more clients, followed by stimulants and prescription opioids. Most regularly smoked tobacco. Differences in substance use patterns were associated with age of onset and vi

Harmful alcohol use and frequent use of marijuana among lifetime problem gamblers and the prevalence of cross-addictive behaviour among Greenland Inuit: evidence from the cross-sectional Inuit Health in Transition Greenland survey 2006-2010.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Public health research has pointed to alcohol and substance abuse as the most significant public health challenges in Greenland with the negative impact on families and communities that entail, but few studies have investigated the role of problem gambling as addictive behaviour among Inuit. The objectives of the present study were to investigate (a) the association between lifetime problem gambling and harmful alcohol use as well as frequent use of marijuana and (b) the prevalence of cross-addictive behaviour among Greenland Inuit. DESIGN: A representative cross-se

Pulmonary status of habitual cocaine smokers.

We determined the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and lung dysfunction in a large sample of habitual smokers of freebase cocaine ("crack") alone and in combination with tobacco and/or marijuana. In addition, we compared these findings with those in an age- and race-matched sample of nonusers of crack who did or did not smoke tobacco and/or marijuana. A detailed respiratory and drug use questionnaire and a battery of lung function tests were administered to (1) a convenience sample of 202 habitual smokers of cocaine (cases) who denied intravenous drug abuse and (2) a reference sample of 99 n

Epidemiologic trends of adolescent use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

This article provides an overview of drug and alcohol use and risk factors among American adolescents. Current trends indicate that tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana are the most frequently used substances among this age group. Further, the greatest risk factors for using these substances are being male, being White, being an older adolescent, engaging in sexual risk behaviors, having a family history of substance abuse, associating with peers who abuse substances, and lacking a sense of school commitment and connectedness. These findings underscore the need to involve communities, families, sch

Epidemiological evidence on the link between drug use and suicidal behaviors among adolescents.

Depression, substance abuse, and aggressive behavior disorders have shown to be among the most influential risk factors for suicide in community and clinical studies of adolescents and adults. Increasing evidence suggests that adolescents who use and abuse alcohol and drugs are at increased risk for suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, and completed suicide, although conclusive evidence has not yet been presented suggesting that drug use causes suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This paper reviews existing epidemiological evidence on the link between the use of more commonly used drugs among ad

Effects of client characteristics on admission activity in United States federally funded drug treatment facilities.

Utilizing data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse's CODAP, this paper examines the effect of client characteristics and drug of abuse on certain admission activity variables. It generally sustains the hypotheses (1) that the demographic characteristics of clients (i.e., sex, age, race-ethnicity, and education) admitted to treatment have no effect on admission activity and (2) that type of primary drug problem (opiates, marijuana, alcohol, barbiturates, and amphetamines) at admission is strongly associated with admission activity. The implications of these data for nondiscriminatory admi

Health risk and behaviour of out-of-school 16-year-olds in New South Wales.

This study describes the health risks and health behaviour of a sample of 283 out-of-school 16-year-olds in New South Wales. We sampled study participants through the Commonwealth Employment Service offices in 1994 using a multistage sampling procedure. Of those surveyed, 129 responded to a letter inviting them to participate and 154 were recruited opportunistically. This paper describes the study methods and results for self-reported binge drinking, weekly use of tobacco and marijuana, sexual abuse, physical abuse, drink-driving, violence, and use of health services, by sex and method of recr
