Hypogenetic lung syndrome is more popularly known as a scimitar syndrome (SS). It is a rare developmental lung malformation which almost always occurs on the right side. The two most constant features of this syndrome are anomalous pulmonary venous return into systemic circulation, most frequently via inferior vena cava (IVC), and lung hypoplasia. We are reporting such a case illustrating most typical and some uncommon features on chest radiograph and multislice computer tomography (MSCT) of chest. Focal herniation of liver through a diaphragmatic defect presenting as an ovoid soft tissue mass

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We assessed the diagnostic yield of chest computed tomography (CT) as an initial diagnostic method for patients with a tuberculosis (TB) infection detected by mass screening in a country with an intermediate TB burden.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with TB infection detected by mass screening performed between January 2015 and March 2018. The patients were classified according to whether they had a chest X-ray (CXR) or CT scan as an initial diagnostic test to exclude active TB.
RESULTS: Of 542 patients with TB infection detected by mass screening,

A 55-year-old man was admitted to the hospital for an elective herniorrhaphy. A significant past history of smoking and alcohol abuse was noted. The patient had no other complaints but a routine chest X-ray revealed an isolated left upper lobe mass. Laboratory tests were unrevealing and the impression was that the patient had a carcinoma. The surgical specimen consisted of a lobular mass containing multiple microabscesses. Grains consistent with actinomycosis were seen and the culture grew out Actinomyces meyeri. There was no other evidence of disease.

The pericardial cyst is a benign, uncommon congenital cystic lesion of pericardial origin located in the anterior and middle mediastinum. Most commonly, pericardial cysts are located in the right anterior cardiophrenic angle. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the chest are the non-invasive imaging modalities for the diagnosis of the pericardial cyst. Here we present a case of a 55-year-old male who presented with coughing and chest pain for two weeks. A chest X-ray revealed a soft-tissue opacity mass in the left lower zone. A CT of the chest showed a fluid-densit

We report a case of a 65 year old man who presented with haemoptysis. X-ray chest PA view shows mediastinal widening suggestive of mediastinal mass. A CT scan of thorax shows a large aneurysm of ascending aorta & arch of aorta. This an-eurysm is eroding the trachea and abutting the sternum and vertebrae. The patient is VDRL reactive. Haemoptysis is a rare presentation of aortic aneurysm.

We report a 12-year-old boy with primary bronchopulmonary fibrosarcoma (PBPF). He was misdiagnosed a having asthma until he presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Chest x-ray showed atelectasis of the right lung. Bronchoscopy performed to rule out foreign body inhalation revealed a friable mass obstructing the right main bronchus. Successful treatment was achieved with surgical resection of the lesion followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

A 48-year-old woman who had abused alcohol admitted to our hospital because of fever and chest pain. Laboratory data presented inflammation and liver dysfunction. Chest X-ray films revealed multiple mass lesions with air fluid levels. We diagnosed multiple lung abscesses and started treatment with antibiotics. However, her fever did not improve and mass lesions increased. On day 6 of hospitalization, three drainage tubes were inserted percutaneously into the mass lesions under computed tomography (CT) guidance, and alpha-hemolytic streptococcus, peptostreptococcus sp. and neutrophils were isol

Giant left atrium has become rare in present day owing to decreased incidence, earlier diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic mitral valve disease. Transthoracic ultrasonography (USG) is remarkable for clear visualization of giant left atrium with clots. Had there been no clot, USG picture could be mistaken for aortic aneurysm. In severe left atrial enlargement, chest x-ray may be mistaken for pleural/pulmonary mass or rarely pleural effusion. USG and echocardiography may help in diagnosis in such case. A 52 year old female presented with progressive respiratory distress for last two years. She

Thymolipoma is a very rare anterior mediastinal mass of thymic origin, accounting for only 2% to 10% of all thymic neoplasm. Histologically, the tumor is usually composed of adipose tissue interspersed with thymic tissues. We report a case of a 58-year-old man who presented with a few weeks history of shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain, found to have a retrocardiac infiltrate on chest X-ray. Computed tomography scan of the chest showed a large anterior mediastinal mass. Surgical excision revealed an ovoid fatty mass, which on histological examination displayed thymic tissue intermixed

A 28-year-old female presented with an incidentally detected mediastinal mass, found on routine chest X-ray. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) was advised to plan course of further management. FDG-PET/CT findings were suggestive of an FDG-avid soft-tissue mass in the left posterior mediastinum in paravertebral location with left pleural effusion. Overall, PET/CT scan findings favored the possibility of a nerve sheath tumor. However, histopathology along with immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of Castleman disease.

Pericardial cysts are a rare and benign entity that comprise 7% of the mediastinal masses. They are asymptomatic in over half of the cases, being usually detected as an incidental mass lesion on chest X-ray. When symptomatic, they usually present with dyspnea, chest pain, or persistent cough. Fever at presentation is an uncommon symptom. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with a history of fever of unknown origin for over two years. The diagnostic study was relevant for an echocardiogram showing a pericardial cyst in the right cardiophrenic angle. While waiting for surgical resection,

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are a rare cause of pulmonary symptoms, including dyspnoea on exertion, hypoxemia and haemoptysis. PAVMs are an aetiology that is often overlooked by physicians when developing a differential diagnosis for pulmonary symptoms and unidentified lung masses. However, it is an important differential diagnosis to have as PAVMs can have serious sequelae including strokes, brain abscess and life-threatening bleeding. We present a case of an impressive PAVM presenting with chest pain, chronic cough, feelings of anxiety, mild resting hypoxemia and exertional

Mediastinal lymphadenopathy may manifest subtly on routine chest radiographs, particularly when arising in the left paraaortic region, where the normal pleural reflection across the aortic arch ("left paraaortic stripe") can be obscured. We report the case of an 82-year-old man with a history of renal cell carcinoma in remission who presented with fatigue, mild dyspnea, and weight loss. A postero-anterior chest X-ray revealed a double aortic contour, absent on imaging two years prior, raising the suspicion of lymphadenopathy. This prompted a non-contrast CT that identified a 2 cm paraaortic ly

Compared to cervical rib, first rib anomaly is less familiar to us as a cause of thoracic outlet syndrome. We report a case of thoracic outlet syndrome due to first rib anomaly. A 50-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of right arm pain when his arm was raised up. Chest X-ray showed an abnormal right first rib which made a J-shaped curve and was attached to the second rib. A palpable mass was noted in the supraclavicular region. Angiography revealed complete occlusion of the right subclavian artery in the Allen test position. During conservative therapy for two months, the sympto

Type IV hiatal hernia is a mixed type of hiatal hernia characterized by the herniation of visceral organs other than the stomach into the mediastinum. It is the least common type of hiatal hernia. We report a case of a 4-month-old male infant who presented with shortness of breath and persistent vomiting. Initial chest X-ray suggested a mediastinal mass, but further evaluation with chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed herniation of the stomach and duodenum through the hiatal oesophagus into the thoracic cavity. Radiological imaging was crucial in confirming the diagnosis of hiatal hern

Schwannoma in primary neurogenic tumors of the trachea is an extremely rare disease. A 21-year-old male patient with stridor was followed up with a diagnosis of asthma for two years. While no lesion was observed in the chest X-ray, tracheal schwannoma was diagnosed in the case who underwent tracheotomy due to the lesion obstructing the trachea almost completely on chest CT. The clinical findings of the patient improved ultimately in the postoperative period. We aimed to discuss the approach and follow-up of the disease with our case, although it is rare that schwannoma might be in the differen

A female in her 40s was admitted with an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. A chest computed tomography (CT) revealed an anterior mediastinal cystic mass with calcification. We suspected the tumor to be a teratoma, and surgery was performed. The tumor was connected with the thymus, and did not infiltrate to the surrounding tissues. Macroscopically, the cyst was multiloculated with fibrous walls. Microscopically, thymic tissue was noted in the cyst wall, with neither thymic epithelial tumor nor teratoma. The cyst wall contained collagen fibers, cholesterol clefts, and calcification. Based on these
