Adverse events following immunization during mass vaccination campaigns at first introduction of a meningococcal A conjugate vaccine in Burkina Faso, 2010.

MenAfriVac™ is a new meningococcal A conjugate vaccine developed to prevent meningitis outbreaks in Africa. It was first introduced during the last quarter of 2010 in three West African countries. We report on the monitoring of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) in Burkina Faso where more than 11 million people aged 1-29 years were vaccinated. Vaccine pharmacovigilance relied on stimulated passive AEFI surveillance countrywide and active surveillance for 12 clinical conditions in one sentinel district (Ziniaré) with 97,715 people eligible for vaccination. All AEFI occurring during th

Monitoring of adverse events during the 2003 mass vaccination campaign with a trivalent meningococcal A/C/W135 polysaccharide vaccine in Burkina Faso.

During a mass campaign with a newly licensed meningococcal polysaccharide ACW135 vaccine in Burkina Faso, adverse events following immunization (AEFI) were monitored up to 4 weeks after the campaign. Eighty-six AEFI cases (5.9 cases per 100,000 vaccine doses distributed) were reported. Among 22 serious events, 4 severe local reactions were considered very likely and 4 severe allergic reactions were considered probably related to the vaccination. One fatal case in a child followed protracted seizures of undetermined cause. In a setting with no prior surveillance system, adverse events were repo

Using geospatial models to map zero-dose children: factors associated with zero-dose vaccination status before and after a mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign in Southern province, Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite gains in global coverage of childhood vaccines, many children remain undervaccinated. Although mass vaccination campaigns are commonly conducted to reach these children their effectiveness is unclear. We evaluated the effectiveness of a mass vaccination campaign in reaching zero-dose children. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in 10 health centre catchment areas in Southern province, Zambia in November 2020. About 2 months before a national mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign conducted by the Ministry of Health, we used aerial satellite maps to identify

Post-Vaccination and Post-Infection Immunity to the Hepatitis B Virus and Circulation of Immune-Escape Variants in the Russian Federation 20 Years after the Start of Mass Vaccination.

A neonatal vaccination against the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was initiated in Russia 20 years ago, with catch-up immunization for adolescents and adults under the age of 60 years launched in 2006. Here, we have assessed the humoral immunity to HBV in different regions of Russia, as well as the infection frequency following 20 years of a nationwide vaccination campaign. We have also evaluated the role of immune-escape variants in continuing HBV circulation. A total of 36,149 healthy volunteers from nine regions spanning the Russian Federation from west to east were tested for HBV surfac

Structural Mass-Spectrometric Description of Immune Complexes in Vaccine-Induced Immune Thrombocytopenia and Thrombosis.

Antibodies binding the heparin-binding domain of platelet factor 4 (PF4) cause a severe prothrombotic condition first identified as vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT). Reverse-engineered recombinant antibodies (rAbs) generated from mass-spectrometry-based sequencing of patient sera recapitulate the functional characteristics of VITT patient serum. However, the structure of the antigen interface and the architecture of the immune complexes are unknown. Here we utilize structural mass spectrometry to describe the immune complexes formed by three rAbs. Employing cross-l

Cost of oral cholera vaccine delivery in a mass immunization program for children in urban Bangladesh.

Cholera poses a substantial health burden in the developing world due to both epidemic and endemic diseases. The World Health Organization recommends oral cholera vaccines for mass vaccination campaigns in addition to traditional prevention practices and treatments in resource-poor settings. In many developing countries like Bangladesh, the major challenge behind implementing mass vaccination campaigns concerns the affordability of the oral cholera vaccine (OCV). Vaccination of children with OCV is not only an impactful approach for controlling cholera at the population level and reducing chil

Considering Needle Phobia among Adult Patients During Mass COVID-19 Vaccinations.

As mass vaccination is underway to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and achieve herd immunity, healthcare professionals need to recognize the fear and phobia of needles among their patients. Approximately 11.5 to 66 million U.S. adults may suffer from this condition. This population often avoids seeking medical care including vaccinations. The exact number of people suffering from this phobia is unknown, and the potential years of life lost in the American health care system cannot be estimated accurately. The resistance to vaccinations among this population may delay achieving herd immunity to en

Immunogenicity of oral poliovirus vaccine administered in mass campaigns versus routine immunization programmes.

Reported are the results of a study to investigate the immunogenicity of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) when administered in mass campaigns compared with that following routine immunization programmes. For this purpose, paired sera were collected from a cohort of children before and after a mass vaccination with OPV in Morocco in 1987. Serum samples and information on vaccination status and other confounding factors that could influence antibody responses to OPV were collected. Neutralizing antibody titres to poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3 were determined using a standardized assay. OPV doses admi

Mass-standardised quantitative biophotonic assay for profiling the SARS-CoV-2 spike IgG response in recovery and vaccination cohorts.

A fully quantitative biophotonic assay for SARS CoV 2 Spike IgG antibodies has been mass-standardised against the NISTmAb human antibody to produce fully quantitative results in mg L-1. The antibody response was compared directly between two vaccinated cohorts for AstraZeneca ChAdOx1-S (AZ, n = 35) and Pfizer/BioNTech BNT162b2 (Pfizer, n = 25) with patients recovering from infection in a SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR-positive cohort (n = 195) and pre-pandemic cohort (n = 200). The vaccine response distributions were used to quantify live-challenge protective thresholds: the 31st percentile of the AZ cohor

Association between body mass index and influenza antibody titer and immune cell count after influenza vaccination: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with altered immune function and may therefore influence the response to influenza vaccination. So, the objective was to investigate whether body mass index (BMI) affected influenza-specific antibody titers and immune cell counts after vaccination. METHODS: A subgroup of 25 participants from the MEGA cohort, a prospective observational study in Augsburg, Germany, aged 25-65 years, was analyzed, including 18 normal-weight individuals and 7 participants with obesity. Influenza antibody titers and immune cell phenotypes were assessed at four visits over nine mon

Barriers to rabies control through mass dog vaccination in rural Uganda: Insights from community perspectives and key informant interviews.

BACKGROUND: Globally, rabies claims about 59,000 human lives annually, and 99% of human transmission is by dogs. The disease is entirely preventable through mass dog vaccination. Despite this, only an estimated 10% of dogs in Uganda are vaccinated, and the reasons for this low uptake are not fully understood. This study investigated barriers to mass dog vaccination for rabies control in Kyegegwa, a rural Ugandan district. METHODOLOGY: This qualitative study was conducted with eight key informants (KIs) and twelve focus groups (FGs) with participants from twelve randomly selected parishes. Aud

Filter Papers to Collect Blood Samples from Dogs: An Easier Way to Monitor the Mass Vaccination Campaigns against Rabies?

Rabies is a deadly viral disease present mainly in low-income countries of Africa and Asia. Dogs are the main reservoir and the source of human deaths. Mass vaccination campaigns of dogs are pivotal to achieve rabies elimination. The monitoring of the immune response of the dog population is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of these campaigns, taking into account field conditions. This study explores the feasibility and the performance of a new tool using filter papers (FPs) to collect blood samples associated with an Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) titration of rabies antibod

Development, feasibility and potential effectiveness of community-based continuous mass dog vaccination delivery strategies: Lessons for optimization and replication.

OBJECTIVES: Dog vaccination can eliminate rabies in dogs, but annual delivery strategies do not sustain vaccination coverage between campaigns. We describe the development of a community-based continuous mass dog vaccination (CBC-MDV) approach designed to improve and maintain vaccination coverage in Tanzania and examine the feasibility of delivering this approach as well as lessons for its optimization. METHODS: We developed three delivery strategies of CBC-MDV and tested them against the current annual vaccination strategy following the UK Medical Research Council's guidance: i) developing a

Application of the "immunization islands" model to improve quality, efficiency and safety of a COVID-19 mass vaccination site.

After SARS-CoV-2 vaccines development came at an unprecedented speed, ensuring safe and efficient mass immunization, vaccine delivery be-came the major public health mandate. Although mass-vaccination sites have been identified as essential to curb COVID-19, their organization and functioning is challenging. In this paper we present the planning, implementation and evalua-tion of a massive vaccination center in Lombardy - the largest Region in Italy and the most heavily hit by the pandemic. The massive hub of Novegro (Milan), managed by the Gruppo Ospedaliero San Donato, opened in April 2021.
