BACKGROUND: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) has become widely available for breast cancer prophylaxis. There are limited data on its long-term oncologic safety. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of breast cancer in patients who underwent prophylactic NSM.
METHODS: All patients undergoing prophylactic NSM at a single institution from 2006 through 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographic factors, genetic predispositions, mastectomy specimen pathology, and oncologic occurrences at follow-up were recorded. Descriptive statistics were performed where necessa

Following increased cultural awareness, expanded access to care, and decreased stigmatization, the number of transgender individuals seeking gender affirmation surgery such as gender-affirmation mastectomy (GAM) continues to rise. While post-mastectomy breast tissue is often sent for pathologic evaluation, few studies address the utility and standardization of this practice. This literature review evaluates the pathology findings in GAM specimens reported in the medical literature. A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was performed to evaluate all medical publications related to pat

OBJECTIVE: Social support has been reported as beneficial for the psychological functioning of people coping with a disease. The objective of this study was to verify whether levels of perceived social support are associated with psychosocial functioning in women who have had a mastectomy and whether specific types of social support are linked to specific indices of functioning.
METHOD: Seventy women with a history of mastectomy completed questionnaires measuring their psychosocial functioning as related to their health status: Disease-Related Appraisal Scale, Acceptance of Life with the Dise

Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH) is an uncommon benign mesenchymal tumor of the breast. Majority occur as diffuse lesions, and diagnosis is often incidental or in a background of other breast pathologies. Bilaterality with multiple tumoral masses in giant breasts is a rarity. We report a 34-year-old nonlactating female with 2-year history of rapid progressive painless bilateral enlargement of the breasts following surgical excision of ill-defined breast lumps which were not subjected to histopathological evaluation a year earlier. Examination revealed bilateral nontender giant brea

OBJECTIVE Survey results suggest that prolonged administration of prophylactic antibiotics is common after mastectomy with reconstruction. We determined utilization, predictors, and outcomes of postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics after mastectomy with or without immediate breast reconstruction. DESIGN Retrospective cohort. PATIENTS Commercially insured women aged 18-64 years coded for mastectomy from January 2004 to December 2011 were included in the study. Women with a preexisting wound complication or septicemia were excluded. METHODS Predictors of prophylactic antibiotics within 5 days a

The purpose of this study is to assess the consequences for breast cancer patients of the trend away from breast conservation in favor of bilateral and contralateral mastectomy. The methods are followed from the review of the literature from 1991 to 2015. Breast-conserving surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy, introduced into mainstream practice in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively, are now the standard of care for early-stage breast cancer. Disruptive change has unexpectedly supervened in the guise of bilateral mastectomy for cancer or prophylaxis and contralateral prophylactic mastectomy.

PURPOSE: Rates of both unilateral (UM) and contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) for unilateral early-stage breast cancer (ESBC) have been increasing since 2003. Recent studies suggest that this increase may be due to women choosing UM and CPM because of fear. We conducted an in-depth qualitative study to identify those factors influencing a woman's choice for more extensive surgery.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with breast cancer patients to examine the experiences, decision making, and choice of UM ± CPM for the treatment of ESBC. Purposive sampling identified su

INTRODUCTION: Every year, 20,000 mastectomy are realized. The most common complication of these surgical procedure is seroma, occurring in a range of 10 to 85% of the cases, which may be responsible for an increased morbidity by complications: disunity of surgical flap, infection, and delay in administrating adjuvant therapies.
OBJECTIVE: We focused on a post-mastectomy padding technique, aiming at decreasing incidence of postoperative seromas.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of patients treated with mastectomy from January 2012 to March 2014 in Amiens University Hos

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia is a benign enlargement of the male breast. Yet enlarged breasts cause anxiety, embarrassment, psychosocial discomfort, and fear of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the experience of gynecomastia patients undergoing mastectomy and liposuction surgery.
METHODS: Seven hundred thirty-three patients were analyzed for age, chief complaint, position, grade, operation approach, biopsy, and complication between mastectomy group and liposuction group, from 1990 to 2010.
RESULTS: Four hundred two patients (436 breasts) were treated with mastectomy and 331 pat

The Goldilocks mastectomy is a method that uses redundant mastectomy flap tissue alone to create a breast mound in female American patients with macromastia. Goldilocks mastectomy was performed for obese Japanese females with breast ptosis, and its indications were considered for Japanese female patients. This report presents the results of five patients who underwent Goldilocks mastectomy, including one with bilateral breast cancer. The average age of the patients was 72 years (range: 67-76 years). The body mass index (BMI) was more than 25 in all the cases. Four patients had invasive ductal

BACKGROUND: The use of lateral thoracic skin and fat for breast reconstruction is advantageous because it does not require the use of muscle transfer, and the donor-site incision is well hidden under the arm. In patients with redundant skin at the thoracic flank, use of this tissue has the added benefit of removal of an unsightly roll. The lateral thoracic skin and fat flap can be harvested using microsurgical technique based on three different pedicles: the thoracodorsal artery perforators; a direct cutaneous branch of the thoracodorsal, axillary, or lateral thoracic arteries; and the lateral

BACKGROUND: The authors characterized the unanticipated reoperations after prophylactic mastectomy, with or without implant reconstruction.
METHODS: The surgical cohort was comprised of 1417 women with a family history of breast carcinoma. The women received a prophylactic mastectomy with (bilateral, n = 593; contralateral, n = 506) or without reconstruction (n = 318) at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) between 1960 and 1993. Reoperations and indications for reoperation were compiled from medical records and a patient survey.
RESULTS: Three hundred eighteen women received a bilateral (n = 39)

Prophylactic mastectomy is an aggressive strategy for breast cancer risk reduction. The indications and efficiency of this procedures are not yet clearly defined. Randomized, prospective studies, comparing different surgical procedures with other modalities of breast cancer risk reduction are lacking. The report evaluates the existing controversy, based on Medline search in the following sequence: risk factors, possibilities of risk reduction, effectiveness of risk reduction, technical considerations and recommendations. Patient selection is difficult and needs an interdisciplinary approach. T

BACKGROUND: In women with breast cancer for whom breast-conserving therapy (BCT) is not the best option, a nipple and areola complex-(NAC) sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction has been proposed as a good and safe alternative to conventional, more radical mastectomy. Surgeons hesitate to perform this operation for fear of recurrence of tumour in the NAC due to undetected nipple involvement (NI) of the tumour. In order to determine whether a NAC-sparing mastectomy is a viable option, the frequency and predictive factors of NI by the tumour were studied in the literature.

To study whether Halsted mastectomy was used only when properly indicated, a prospective survey was undertaken on the process of care of 985 breast cancer patients seen consecutively at 62 general hospitals in Northern and Central Italy. Overall, 79% of Halsted mastectomies were performed inappropriately. The procedure was less likely to be performed on more educated patients and, other factors considered, on those seen at hospitals with larger volume. We conclude that the measurement of utilization of a surgical procedure for which only a few appropriate indications exist may help identify im

The late results of treatment of operable patients with breast carcinoma are analysed. The frequency of local recurrences and metastases in the subclavicular lymph nodes and distal organs are compared according to the method of operative intervention. It is emphasized that purposeful exposure to radiation makes it possible to achieve similar results in Patey's, Halsted's, and Urban-Holdin's operations. From the functional standpoint, however, conservative radical mastectomy surpasses radical and extended radical mastectomy considerably. All this allows Patey's operation in combination with irr

We evaluated the postoperative course of all patients who had mastectomies from 1978 through 1982 at City of Hope National Medical Center (Duarte, Calif). The overall clean mastectomy wound infection rate was 24/294 (8.2%). The incidence of mastectomy wound infection varied with the method of biopsy and was 3.2% after needle aspiration and 9.5% after open biopsy. Mastectomy immediately after open biopsy ("one step") had an infection rate of 5.3%, whereas mastectomy at a subsequent procedure ("two step") had a rate of 12.4%. The maximal infection rate (23.0%) occurred following the two-step pro
