BACKGROUND: The injection of liquid paraffin wax was a form of breast augmentation practised in Hong Kong 30-40 years ago. Patients may present many years later with complications of this treatment.
METHODS: The records of 43 patients diagnosed with paraffinomas of the breast at a teaching hospital in Hong Kong were reviewed. These patients had received paraffin injections 3-41 years (median 17) previously.

A simple solution may exist for both the problem of sudden dementia and confusion after surgery in the elderly and the bimodal relapse pattern among breast cancer patients who were treated with a mastectomy. Sensitive radioimmunoassays for the placental proteins PP5 and SP1 were used to investigate possible ectopic synthesis of these proteins by breast tumors. Elevated serum levels of the proteins were found in a small proportion of patients who had undergone mastectomy for malignant tumors, but little useful information on tumor spread could be gained from such measurements. From 1970 through 1981 232 women with breast cancer (190 with T1 N0 M0 and 242 with T2 N0 M0 disease) received postoperative radiotherapy . The usual surgical procedure was simple mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection. During a period of 29 years (1960-1989), 19 patients with benign (15 cases) or malignant (4 cases) phylloides tumours were seen at the Surgical Clinic of Fundeni Hospital. Xeroradiography was used to detect and aid in needle localization of 63 nonpalpable breast lesions over an 8-year period. In 28 patients (44%), no microcalcifications were present in the lesion biopsied. Xeroradiographs of these noncalcified lesions after their submersion in water carried a clean and close resemblance to their in vivo appearance and aided the pathologist in localizing the abnormality within the biopsy specimen. This simple method improved the accuracy of the needle-guided biopsy while allowing excision of minimal breast tissue. A total of 17 (27%) lesions revealed malignancy.

Postoperative axillary lymphoscintigrams have been performed according to a technique of two-staged injection in 313 patients who had undergone a radical mastectomy with axillary dissection for breast cancer.
