Identification of Fiber and Asphalt Mastic Interface Failure Modes Based on the Improved Growth Curve Mixture Model.

The interface failure modes between fibers and asphalt mastic exhibit complex and diverse morphologies under the influence of multiple factors, making cluster analysis difficult. To address this issue, this study proposes an improved growth curve mixture model (IGCMM) for the unsupervised clustering of interface failure modes. Through single-fiber pull-out tests on 90 specimens under three temperatures (-10 °C, 25 °C, and 60 °C) and three fiber types (basalt, glass, and polyester), load-displacement curves were obtained. The multivariate power exponential (MPE) distribution was used to charact

Evaluation of mastic, a crude drug obtained from Pistacia lentiscus for gastric and duodenal anti-ulcer activity.

The effect of mastic, a concrete resinous exudate obtained from the stem of the tree Pistacia lentiscus, has been studied on experimentally-induced gastric and duodenal ulcers in rats. Mastic at an oral dose of 500 mg/kg produced a significant reduction in the intensity of gastric mucosal damage induced by pyloric ligation, aspirin, phenylbutazone, reserpine and restraint + cold stress. It produced a significant decrease of free acidity in 6-h pylorus-ligated rats and a marked cytoprotective effect against 50% ethanol in rats which could be reversed by prior treatment with indomethacin. The pr

Establishing a preliminary normative database of oral efficiency for children: the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids Application (ToMaSSApp).

UNLABELLED: The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (ToMaSS) is a diagnostic tool that measures oropharyngeal efficiency of solid bolus consumption through the number of bites, mastication cycles, swallows, and time taken. An application (ToMaSSApp™) has been used to administer the assessment. The project aimed to establish a preliminary normative database for the ToMaSS-C in children administered with the ToMaSSApp™ and to make comparisons to previously manually collected data. A total of 114 healthy children (57 boys and 57 girls) aged 4 to 19 years (M = 9 years, SD = 4.6 years) were a

Automated Assessment of Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids Using a Neck-Worn Electronic Stethoscope: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) is a validated screening tool for assessing masticatory and swallowing functions. However, the conventional TOMASS relies on operator-dependent methods, which limit its objectivity and efficiency. The neck-worn electronic stethoscope (NWES), a contact sensor positioned on the back of the neck, has recently been developed to automatically detect and monitor swallowing actions through deep learning-based analysis of collected sound data. OBJECTIVE: This study piloted a semi-automated assessment approach using a NWES to objective

Relationship between normative and self-perceived criteria for orthodontic treatment need and satisfaction with esthetics and mastication in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatments are performed to improve esthetics and masticatory functions. In general, clinical criteria are used to recommend such treatments without considering the opinion of the patient. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between technically defined orthodontic need (normative criteria) and the need for treatment perceived by adolescent patients. METHODS: A total of 215 students aged between 15 and 19 years were selected and asked to respond to a questionnaire concerning their perception of need for orthodontic treatment and their satisfaction with their

Reduced mastication during growth inhibits cognitive function by affecting trigeminal ganglia and modulating Wnt signaling pathway and ARHGAP33 molecular transmission.

Binding of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to its receptor tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) is essential for the development of the hippocampus, which regulates memory and learning. Decreased masticatory stimulation during growth reportedly increases BDNF expression while decreasing TrkB expression in the hippocampus. Increased BDNF expression is associated with Wnt family member 3A (Wnt3a) expression and decreased expression of Rho GTPase Activating Protein 33 (ARHGAP33), which regulates intracellular transport of TrkB. TrkB expression may be decreased at the cell surface and affects the hip

Evaluating a Regression-Based Approach to Norming the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (ToMaSS): A Comparison with Traditional Stratified Methods.

The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (ToMaSS) is a commonly-used adjunctive assessment to quantify solid bolus ingestion. However, published norms are characterised by relatively small sample sizes and wide age brackets, increasing the risk of skew, influence by outliers, and reduced statistical power. Regression-based approaches to norming may mitigate some of these limitations. To evaluate whether a regression-based approach offered a significant advantage over the traditional stratified approach for the refinement of ToMaSS norms. Prospective-retrospective design, with prospectivel
