Deformity of the left breast and axilla observed in Rembrandt's famous painting "Bathsheba at her toilet" (1654, Louvre Paris) has been discussed by several researchers. Proposed diagnoses were breast cancer and abscess due to tuberculosis. The present article reviews previous articles written concerning the left breast abnormalities of Bathsheba and carefully examines other works of Rembrandt modeled by Hendrickje and painted around 1654. Previous diagnosis of breast cancer and tuberculous mastitis is less probable. Because Hendrickje survived for more then 9 years after the painting and in o

A case of furuncular myiasis of the breast due to infestation by the larva of Cordylobia anthropophaga in a young lady is presented. Some of the physical presentations of Cordylobia anthropophaga mastitis are similar to those of carcinoma of the breast. High index of suspicion in endemic areas, including patients who had visited such areas, the characteristic intense itching of the affected breast, the use of the magnifying hand lens and subsequent extraction of the offending maggots are the invaluable aids to diagnosis and treatment. The ulcer left on the breast after extraction of the maggot

As part of a project to identify the pathophysiological cause or causes of mastitic hypogalactia, midlactation cows were infused in two homolateral quarters with 10 micrograms of endotoxin while being milked four times daily to resolve better the temporal changes in mammary synthetic activity during endotoxin mastitis. Milk fat was decreased by the first milking (5 h) postinfusion and then recovered rapidly. In contrast, milk yield and the yields of protein and lactose were not significantly inhibited until the second milking, and these yields recovered slowly thereafter. The decline in milk y

Healthy, midlactation cows were given intramammary infusions of 10 micrograms of endotoxin in two homolateral quarters. Productive, inflammatory, and systemic responses were studied to investigate the pathophysiological effects of mastitis on lactational performance. Endotoxin suppressed milk yield in all quarters of treated cows. A more severe and prolonged suppression occurred in infused quarters compared with uninfused quarters. The fat percentage of milk from all quarters was increased with a greater increase occurring in infused quarters. The protein composition of milk was elevated, and

BACKGROUND: Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign breast inflammatory disease often associated with Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii. Its clinical and radiologic features frequently mimic breast carcinoma, leading to diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a North African 41-year-old woman with pituitary insufficiency who developed a painless, enlarging breast mass. Multimodality imaging (ultrasound, mammography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging) all suggested malignancy, with magnetic resonance imaging classified as Breast Ima

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a rare inflammatory breast disease affecting women aged 20-40 years, which can mimic infectious or neoplastic mastitis. This retrospective study at Saint-Louis Hospital, Paris, France, from 2010 to 2023, analysed histologically confirmed disease in 19 patients to refine its clinical and pathological features and evaluate treatments. Clinically, 89% of patients presented with one or more erythematous breast masses, often associated with abscesses, adenopathy, nipple retraction, oedema or fistulas. Histology showed large perilobular granulomas with polymorphi

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare, benign, but chronic and recurrent inflammatory breast disease that significantly impacts physical and psychological well-being. It often presents symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discharge, leading to diagnostic confusion with malignancy. The etiology of GM remains unclear, though autoimmune and multifactorial components are suspected. This study aimed to explore the genetic underpinnings of GM using whole-exome sequencing (WES) on 22 GM patients and 52 healthy controls to identify single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and copy number variations (CNVs) po

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease, and there are few reports of GLM in pregnancy (GLMIP). Therefore, this study retrospectively analyzed cases diagnosed with GLMIP from 2011 to 2023 and found that in patients with GLMIP there were varied demographic manifestations such as age, pregnancy weeks, and numbers of pregnancy and delivery, and several associated complications including erythema nodosum, arthritis and lower extremity edema. Among them, 82.8% of the patients received integrated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine treatment, an

The economic efficiency of dairy farms is directly influenced by reproductive performance. Reproductive performance is affected by postpartum health; however, it is unknown which diseases reduce reproductive performance or how often these diseases occur in tie-stall dairy farms. In this study, the 15 most frequent diseases in tie-stalls and their impact on reproduction were determined by logistic analysis. Data from reproductive and veterinary records of 814 cows (473 Holstein) calving between April 2016 and March 2018 reared in 9 tie-stall commercial dairy farms were used. The 15 most frequen

Background: We have already known that idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory disorder that can clinically mimic breast carcinoma, especially affects parous women of childbearing age, but there is little literature to report about pregnancy associated granulomatous mastitis (PAGM). The aim of our study is to report and describe the clinical signs, managements, clinical course, and clinical outcomes after treatment of PAGM in our hospital. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 15 pregnant patients who were diagnosed as PAGM in our hospital collected from De

Mastitis, which often manifests as udder infection in dairy animals, is of great concern as it affects public health and results in heavy economic losses to the dairy industry. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the cultivable bacterial species associated with bovine clinical mastitis and their resistance patterns towards different antimicrobials. The milk samples from cows suffering from clinical mastitis during monsoon season were investigated. The prevalence of clinical mastitis was significantly high in Holstein-Friesian crossbred cows, followed by in Jersey

BACKGROUND: Breast tuberculosis, also known as tuberculous mastitis, is an extremely rare form of tuberculosis. It accounts for <0.1% of all breast diseases and <2% of all cases of tuberculosis. It is often misdiagnosed as breast cancer, which can potentially lead to a delayed diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old Japanese woman presented with a tumor-mimicking lesion in her right breast, followed by intractable mastitis with a fistula formation. The time until the correct diagnosis of tuberculosis of the breast and sternal bone was 14 months.
CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, it is importan

Since idiopathic granulomatous lobular mastitis, also known as idiopathic granulomatous mastitis or granulomatous lobulitis, was first described by Kessler and Wolloch in 1972, no consensus on the ideal and definitive treatment for this phenomenon has been reached thus far. Idiopathic granulomatous lobular mastitis mostly frequently observed in women of childbearing age within a few years of pregnancy with a higher incidence in patients of Hispanic, Native American, Middle Eastern, and African descent. This entity, per se, is a rare, benign, chronic inflammatory breast condition of unknown aet

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disease of the breast. The aetiology is unknown. Erythema nodosum (EN) is a rare skin disease associated with IGM. EN is a disease in which the aetiologic factors include infection, malignancy, autoimmune diseases, and pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence and coexistence of EN with IGM and the approach to treatment.
METHODS: Patients who were admitted to the General Surgery and Dermatology Department of our hospital and diagnosed with EN and IGM were evaluated. Demog

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell mastitis (PCM), a common type of mastitis often mimics malignancy clinically and radiologically.
OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to explore the diagnostic value of superb microvascular imaging (SMI) in differentiating PCM from malignant breast lesions.
METHODS: A total of 95 breast lesions underwent conventional ultrasound (US) and SMI examination between May 2016 and April 2018. Vessels were detected in SMI in a quantitative manner. Blood flow parameters including systolic peak velocity (SPV), resistance index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI) were evaluated. We fur
