Maxillary sinuses and midface in patients with cleidocranial dysostosis.

The cleidocranial dysplasia is general skeletal disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance. It is manifested by many craniofacial abnormalities, of which the maxillary hypoplasia is the most evident. The aim of the study was to use CBCT to evaluate the volume of the maxillary sinuses and the dimensions of maxillae in patients with CCD and compare them with healthy individuals. Files of four children with cleidocranial dysplasia were investigated. Volume of every maxillary sinus as well as two dimensional measurements of distances between particular points of interest located on surface of

Sonic aerosol therapy to target maxillary sinuses.

AIM: Intranasal aerosol administration of drugs is widely used by ENT specialists. Although clinical evidence is still lacking, intranasal nebulization appears to be an interesting therapeutic option for local drug delivery, targeting anatomic sites beyond the nasal valve. The sonic nebulizer NL11SN associates a 100Hertz (Hz) sound to the aerosolization to improve deposition in the nasal/paranasal sinuses. The aim of the present study was: to evaluate in vivo the influence of associating a 100Hz sound on sinus ventilation and nasal and pulmonary aerosol deposition in normal volunteers, and; to

The role of ultrasonography in the evaluation of maxillary sinusitis in pediatrics.

UNLABELLED: Sinusitis in children may sometimes present non-specific signs and symptoms. The imaging techniques used for its diagnosis are computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, the standard radiography being used less and less. Ultrasonography is seldom mentioned in literature as a diagnosis method of sinusitis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the value of ultrasonography compared with the standard X-ray in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis in children. METHOD: The study was prospectively conducted. The study group included 76 patients who had an ultrasou

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the maxilla and sinusitis maxillaris.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are widely used as bone-stabilizers, but side effects of BP therapy include bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), which is resistant to therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of maxillary BRONJ involving sinusitis maxillaris. 21 patients presenting with maxillary BRONJ, from 2005 to 2008, were included in the study. In 18 cases BP had been administered for carcinoma and in 3 cases for osteoporosis, with an average exposure time of 47.4 months. 12 patients spontaneously developed BRONJ. The 10 patients diagnosed with stage III BRONJ p

[Chondromyxoid fibroma of the left maxillary and ethmoid sinuses].

Chondromyxoid fibroma is an infrequent bone tumour in the craniofacial bones and exceptional in the paranasal sinuses. This unusual location, its non-specific clinical manifestation and aggressive behaviour with local destruction and a high recurrence rate can complicate precise diagnosis and treatment.

Bacterial flora in normal adult maxillary sinuses.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting data exist about the presence of bacteria in healthy maxillary sinus cavities. This study was designed to determine the bacterial flora and to quantify the level of bacterial presence in healthy maxillary sinus cavities. METHOD: Subjects included 34 patients undergoing Lefort I osteotomy for orthognathic surgery. All patients were preoperatively evaluated by a questionnaire and a complete physical examination including sinus endoscopy. Our exclusion criteria were presence of sinonasal symptoms, asthma, antibiotic treatment in the past 3 months, treatment with local ste

Presence of cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: Although cholesterol granuloma associated with chronic middle ear disease is shown to be common in the mastoid antrum and air cells of the temporal bone (Leon et al., Arch Pathol Lab Med 126:217-219, 2002), its presence in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses is rarely encountered. There are few cases reported regarding the incidence of cholesterol granuloma in these sinuses (Ko et al., Am J Otoryngol 27:370-372, 2006). CASE: Here, we report a case of concomitant cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses of a 33-year-old man who underwent surgical excision. DISCUS

Azithromycin and amoxicillin in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis.

Seventy-eight patients participated in this multicenter, third-party-blinded study comparing a single daily dose of azithromycin for 5 days (500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg/day for days 2-5) with amoxicillin (500 mg three times daily) for 10 days in the treatment of acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis. A total of 38 evaluable patients contributed to the efficacy analysis. The overall clinical response rate was 100% for both antibiotics. The clinical cure rate, as determined by the investigator, was 73.9% for azithromycin and 73.3% for amoxicillin; improvement was seen in 26.1% and 26.7% of

Cephalexin in the treatment of acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis.

We evaluated the efficacy of cephalexin therapy in 104 patients with infectious maxillary sinusitis. Confirmation of diagnosis was made by x-ray film, antral puncture, and culture. Sixty-nine patients met all criteria for evaluation. The majority of patients received cephalexin, 1 gm/day in four divided doses for ten days, including the 48-hour period after the patient had become asymptomatic. Patients returned for observation one week and two weeks after initiating therapy. Satisfactory clinical results were obtained in 57 (83%). Results showed that cephalexin was effective in treating sinusi

Maxillary sinusitis caused by dental implants extending into the maxillary sinus and the nasal cavities.

This report describes the case of a patient who underwent osseointegrated dental implant placement. The implants were misplaced inside the nasal fossae and in the right maxillary sinus, causing chronic purulent sinusitis. CT scan without contrast showed signs of right maxillary sinusitis and confirmed the misplacement of four dental implants that surfaced into the nasal cavities. The imaging also revealed the presence of another implant that emerged inside the maxillary sinus. The patient underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery with complete symptom remission at the long-term follow-up.

[The value of maxillary sinus irrigation in children with maxillary sinusitis using the Waters film].

Eighty children with chronic sinusitis receiving a conservative treatment were followed. They found that without any further therapy the Waters view of 30 children became normal. The usefulness of irrigation of the maxillary sinus was studied in the other 50 children. In one group of 25 children a sinus endoscopy and sinus irrigation was performed. In a control group of another 25 children no further treatment was performed. A comparison between the Waters view and sinus endoscopy is also included in the study. The authors found little difference in the treatment results in the two groups. Fur

Bacteriological evaluation of 194 adult patients with acute frontal sinusitis and findings of simultaneous maxillary sinusitis.

In a prospective study bacteriological findings from frontal and maxillary sinus secretes were analyzed. Frontal sinus trephination was performed to 103 and maxillary irrigation to 192 patients. Main pathogens in the frontal as well as in the maxillary sinus secretes were Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae. beta-lactamase production of H. influenzae was found in 17% of frontal and in 16% of maxillary sinus samples. Bacteriological findings were supported by the staining results. The portion of anaerobic pathogens in cultures were poor, though Bacteroides fragilis antigen was d

Management of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis with endodontic microsurgery in maxillary posterior teeth: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) can develop from apical periodontitis (AP) of maxillary posterior teeth, known as maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin(MSEO). The treatment of OMS remains controversial. Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) plays a crucial role for treatment of AP when root canal treatment and retreatment fails. With multidisciplinary management, EMS alnoe may be effective for MSEO . CASE PRESENTATION: Ten cases of MSEO undergoing EMS are reported at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University between 2022 and 2023. Clinical and radio-graphic eval

[Effect of severe periodontitis of maxillary molars on the maxillary sinus and the treatment principles of periodontitis related maxillary sinusitis].

Maxillary sinus is located in the maxilla bone with the largest volume in all sinuses and is closest to the roots of maxillary posterior teeth, especially the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary second molar. The thickness of the normal maxillary sinus mucosa is about 1 mm. When stimulated or infected, it shows thickening of the mucosa. Periodontitis is one of the most common oral diseases in human beings, and the complex root anatomy of the maxillary molars aggravates the difficulty of inflammation control. Severe periodontitis of maxillary molars without effective treatment can affect the maxi

Near-infrared imaging of the sinuses: preliminary evaluation of a new technology for diagnosing maxillary sinusitis.

Diagnosing sinusitis remains a challenge for primary care physicians. There is a need for a simple, office-based technique to aid in the diagnosis of sinusitis without the cost and radiation risk of conventional radiologic imaging. We designed a low-cost near-infrared (NIR) device to transilluminate the maxillary sinuses. The use of NIR light allows for greater interrogation of deep-tissue structures as compared to visible light. NIR imaging of 21 patients was performed and compared with computed tomography (CT) scans. Individual maxillary sinuses were scored on a scale from 0 to 2 based on th
