Analysis of the carbon footprint of pharmacological treatments in advanced chronic kidney disease and peritoneal dialysis: Oral vs. subcutaneous administration.

BACKGROUND: Carbon footprint quantification currently stands as the most accepted model for assessing the ecological impact of human activities. Selecting the most environmentally friendly treatment for pathologies arising from advanced chronic kidney disease can reduce the carbon footprint. METHODS: We aimed to analyze the carbon footprint from using subcutaneous administration treatments versus oral medication in patients with the same medical condition: advanced chronic kidney disease (ACKD) (CKD stage 4 or 5 not in dialysis) or peritoneal dialysis (PD). This is an observational, cross-sec

Patients' perspective on the environmental impact of the severe dry eye disease healthcare pathway.

BACKGROUND: The NHS has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. Dry eye disease, a chronic condition affecting approximately 29.5% of the global population, poses a significant challenge due to its environmentally harmful care pathway, which also exacerbates the condition. This research article presents a multi-centre cross-sectional survey of patients with severe dry eye disease to examine the pollution and emissions associated with the NHS dry eye disease care pathway. The aim is to identify target areas where innovation can aid the NHS in reaching its net-zero goal. METHO

Eco-directed sustainable prescribing: feasibility for reducing water contamination by drugs.

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from the purchase and use of medications are recognized as ubiquitous contaminants of the environment. Ecological impacts can range from subtle to overt--resulting from multi-generational chronic exposure to trace levels of multiple APIs (such as in the aquatic environment) or acute exposure to higher levels (such as with wildlife ingestion of improperly discarded waste). Reducing API entry to the environment has relied solely on conventional end-of-pipe pollution control measures such as wastewater treatment and take-back collections of leftover, unwan

Disposal of syringes, needles, and lancets used by diabetic patients in North East Essex.

To investigate community disposal of contaminated sharps by insulin-treated diabetes mellitus patients, we surveyed 144 patients. Twenty-three (16.0%) were non-contactable, leaving a study sample of 121, of whom 102 (84.3%) responded. Among the respondents 93.1% used lancets and 97.1% needles; 70.6% used lancets once or twice a day and 65.7% used needles twice a day. The majority said they had received no information on safe disposal of sharps. Of those recalling advice, most received it from diabetes nurse specialists. The majority of needle users used needle clippers and/or sharps bins for d

Putting safety first: ensuring safe vaccination practices during the 2006 rubella campaign in Bolivia.

Over 3 weeks in 2006, 3826083 persons were vaccinated against rubella during a national immunization campaign in Bolivia. This campaign was the largest mass immunization campaign ever conducted in the country. Therefore, in addition to strategic and micro-planning and financial and social mobilization, issues of safety (eg, safe injection practices and waste management) were at the forefront of campaign preparations. Waste management practices were promoted through guidelines, training, and implementation of locally appropriate solutions. These experiences show that, with detailed planning and

Sunlight-Driven Self-Cleaning Ultrafine Particulate Matter Filter with Antibacterial Activity.

Air pollution by particulate matter (PM) and airborne pathogens causes severe health problems in the human body. Presently, popular disposable air filters yield huge waste and have a fatal impact on the environment. Postuse cleaning of air filters also leads to secondary air and water pollution. Here, we report a sunlight-driven self-cleaning PM filter by coupling a full-solar-spectrum-active photocatalyst comprising up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) decorated with semiconductor iron(III) oxide (UCNP@α-Fe2O3) shells stabilized upon graphene functionalized borosilicate fibrous membrane (rGO-B

Attitude-Practice Gap in Ecopharmacology: A Cross-Sectional Study of Healthcare Professionals in Western Maharashtra, India.

Introduction The accumulation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the environment poses a serious global threat, accelerating antimicrobial resistance and disrupting ecosystems. Since standard wastewater treatment plants cannot fully degrade these pollutants, mitigating pharmaceutical wastes must begin at the source. Consequently, healthcare professionals play a critical role in prescribing sustainably and guiding patients in disposing of their medication. Given this responsibility, this study assesses and compares the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding ecopharmacology am

Clinical translation of targeted alpha therapy: safety, dosimetry, radiation protection, and regulatory considerations.

Targeted alpha therapy (TAT) has moved from a largely experimental approach into clinically relevant radiopharmaceutical therapy, although evidence varies across radionuclides and products. Alpha particles combine high linear energy transfer with a tissue range of only a few cell diameters. This permits dense, localized energy deposition but creates challenges in dosimetry, radiopharmaceutical production, quality control, contamination control, patient management, waste disposal, and regulation. This review examines evidence for safe clinical implementation and distinguishes established practi

Challenges in menstrual health service delivery to girls and young women in Mumbai slums: provider perspectives.

Although India recognises its importance, good menstrual health management continues to elude women and girls in disadvantaged areas including urban slums, and the role of health care providers is poorly understood. Our objective in this study was to explore the perspectives of healthcare providers regarding the challenges faced in delivering menstrual health services to girls and young women. A total of 16 key informant interviews were conducted with frontline workers, pharmacists and medical practitioners serving urban slums in Mumbai. Provider perceptions suggest that girls' and young women

Assessing the hygienic disposal of patient stools among health workers at the Sunyani teaching hospital, Ghana.

Improper hygienic disposal of patient stools in healthcare settings presents considerable dangers to infection management and the well-being of healthcare personnel, patients, and the local community. Although health workers play an essential role in ensuring proper sanitation and preventing infections, investigations have revealed shortcomings in adherence to stool disposal protocols in numerous healthcare environments, especially in low- and middle-income nations such as Ghana. The study therefore assessed the hygienic disposal of patient stools among health workers at the Sunyani Teaching H

Increase in sharps injuries in surgical settings versus nonsurgical settings after passage of national needlestick legislation.

BACKGROUND: The operating room is a high-risk setting for occupational sharps injuries and bloodborne pathogen exposure. The requirement to provide safety-engineered devices, mandated by the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000, has received scant attention in surgical settings. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed percutaneous injury surveillance data from 87 hospitals in the United States from 1993 through 2006, comparing injury rates in surgical and nonsurgical settings before and after passage of the law. We identified devices and circumstances associated with injuries among surgical team m

Design, Modeling, and Validation of a Pneumatically Actuated Distal Segment for Endoscopy.

To reduce the risk of patient cross-contamination associated with reusable endoscopes, health care systems are increasingly turning to single-use devices. While this shift improves hygiene, it raises significant environmental and economic concerns due to increased medical waste and long-term costs. In response, this study proposes a semi-disposable pneumatic endoscope concept designed to support the transition toward greener endoscopy. It is composed of a reusable handle and a disposable, pneumatically actuated insertion tube. The study focuses on the design, modeling, and prototyping of the f

From dental waste to uranium adsorbent: A sustainable strategy for hydroxyapatite recovery and radioactive water decontamination.

As pathological medical waste, extracted human teeth are typically disposed of by high-temperature incineration. This method is not only costly, but also results in the unnecessary loss of valuable hydroxyapatite (HA) resources. Meanwhile, the contamination of water by radioactive U(VI) remains a major environmental challenge for the nuclear industry. In this study, a sustainable strategy was proposed, in which discarded extracted teeth were converted via a mild pretreatment process into a high-performance hydroxyapatite adsorbent (denoted as d-HA) that retained the natural hierarchical pore s

Carbon footprint of a chemotherapy production unit within a hospital pharmacy: Time for green pharmacy.

BackgroundIn the last decade, environmental impact assessment has become a major concern for human activities, which is particularly true for health. The french healthcare sector emits approximately 49 million tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) per year, approximately 8% of the total national Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. In this context, assessing the carbon footprint of a resource-consuming unit like the cytotoxic drug production unit (CPU) is essential. The study aimed to assess the carbon footprint of a CPU.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted in a french CPU producing more than 51,00
