Adherence to medication in patients with dementia: predictors and strategies for improvement.

Measures to facilitate patient medication adherence should be considered an integral part of the comprehensive care of older patients with multiple diseases. However, impairment of cognitive functions and dementia, in particular, may substantially compromise adherence behaviour. Therefore, a literature review was performed to identify factors associated with adherence to medication in patients with cognitive impairment or dementia, and to discuss strategies for improvement of non-adherence. Evidence-based information on how to deal with adherence to medication in patients with dementia is scar

Longitudinal Monitoring and Predictive Modeling of Medication Adherence in Ischemic Stroke Patients.

Medication adherence is central to secondary prevention after ischemic stroke, but self-reported adherence may change during follow-up. In this single-center longitudinal framework, 210 participants were enrolled, and 191 completed the 180-day assessment. Medication-taking was assessed using a structured telephone interview for days 1-30, 31-90, and 91-180, and was classified as good when the exposure-day-weighted composite adherence percentage was at least 80%. The Chinese BMQ-Specific and Family APGAR were administered at day 30, day 90, and day 180. A four-predictor logistic model used resi

Electronic Monitoring of Medication Adherence to Direct Oral Anticoagulants: A Systematic Review.

Strict medication adherence, which reflects the process by which patients take their medication as prescribed, is crucial for the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Therefore, technological devices may serve as promising tools for assessing adherence. We aimed to systematically review the literature focusing on electronically monitored adherence (EMA) to DOACs. All studies indexed in EMBASE, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception until September 1, 2023, were searched. Original studies targeting the query topics were included, findings were categorized and

Improving High-Risk Osteoporosis Medication Adherence and Safety With an Automated Dashboard.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis medications, notably anabolic therapies, necessitate careful oversight due to their high cost and laboratory monitoring requirements, precise dosing in clinics, and strategic sequencing. These challenges were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this, we created an automated clinic dashboard to aid in population health management at a US Department of Veterans Affairs osteoporosis clinic. METHODS: An automated dashboard was created to host data for patients with ≥ 1 prescription for alendronate, zoledronic acid, abaloparatide, denosumab, or romosozumab whe

Medication Adherence to Direct Oral Anticoagulants: Extent and Impact of Side Effects.

PURPOSE: Arterial and venous thromboembolism are a leading cause of mortality. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are highly effective in both stroke prevention and prevention of venous thrombotic events. Medication adherence is a prerequisite for optimal protection against thromboembolic complications. Recent studies have shown that good adherence cannot be taken for granted by DOACs. In this cross-sectional study adherence among DOAC users was investigated and associations between beliefs about medication, perceived side effects and adherence were explored. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included

Comparison of medication adherence to different oral anticoagulants: population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous observational studies have yielded conflicting results on whether medication adherence differs between patients receiving warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Importantly, no study has adequately accounted for warfarin dosing being continuously modified based on INR values while dosing of DOACs is fixed. We aimed to compare non-adherence between new users of apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban and warfarin in a population-based cohort. METHODS: New users of apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban and warfarin from 2014 to 2019 living in the Icelandic capital area were

New Caregiver Diagnoses of Severe Depression and Child Asthma Controller Medication Adherence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children with asthma who have depressed caregivers are known to be less adherent to medication regimes. However, it is less clear how adherence responds to a caregiver's new diagnosis of severe depression or whether there is a similar relationship with other serious caregiver diagnoses. The hypothesis is that adherence worsens both with new diagnoses of depression and possibly with new diagnoses of other serious conditions. METHODS: This study follows a cohort of 341,444 continuously insured children with asthma before and after a caregiver's new diagnosis of severe

The impact of stigma on medication adherence in patients with functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors contribute to the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia (FD). Antidepressant agents are beneficial in treatment of refractory FD. However, their efficacy is greatly hindered by the poor treatment adherence. Stigma is present in patients with chronic diseases or mental disorders and could affect adherence. The present study was aimed to evaluate stigma prevalence in FD patients and to explore the impact of stigma on treatment adherence to antidepressants. METHODS: Functional dyspepsia patients unsatisfied with the regular first-line treatment and received newly
