Chitosan Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Applications.

The purpose of this study is to identify the steps involved in fabricating silica/chitosan composite membranes and their suitability for fuel cell applications. It also intends to identify the physical characteristics of chitosan composite membranes, including their degree of water absorption, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and functional groups. In this investigation, composite membranes were fabricated using the solution casting method with a chitosan content of 5 g and silica dosage variations of 2% and 4% while stirring at a constant speed for 2 h. According to the findings, t

Evaluation of a hydroxyapatite-crosslinked fish gelatin membranes.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Porcine collagen is widely used in regenerative therapies to generate membranes for bone augmentation. However, porcine or bovine gelatin or collagen is often not appropriate for patients with creed and religious beliefs or for allergic reasons. In this study, we evaluated the potential of fish gelatin to generate membranes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fish gelatin and hydroxyapatite (HAp) were used at three different ratios (2:0, 2:1, 2:1.5, and 2:2) to prepare gelatin-hydroxyapatite (G-HAp) membranes via freeze-drying and heat-crosslinking. The surface morphology and cell att

Novel γ-sarcoglycan interactors in murine muscle membranes.

BACKGROUND: The sarcoglycan complex (SC) is part of a network that links the striated muscle cytoskeleton to the basal lamina across the sarcolemma. The SC coordinates changes in phosphorylation and Ca++-flux during mechanical deformation, and these processes are disrupted with loss-of-function mutations in gamma-sarcoglycan (Sgcg) that cause Limb girdle muscular dystrophy 2C/R5. METHODS: To gain insight into how the SC mediates mechano-signaling in muscle, we utilized LC-MS/MS proteomics of SC-associated proteins in immunoprecipitates from enriched sarcolemmal fractions. Criteria for inclusi

Methods for stability assessment of electrically conductive membranes.

The surface properties of electrically conductive membranes (ECMs) govern their advanced abilities. During operation, these properties may differ considerably from their initially measured properties. Depending on their operating conditions, ECMs may undergo various degrees of passivation. ECM passivation can detrimentally impact their real time performance, causing large deviations from expected behaviour based on their initially measured properties. Quantifying these changes will enable consistent performance comparisons across the active and electrically conductive membrane research field.

Characterization of hypersensitivity reactions to polysulfone hemodialysis membranes.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, cases have been reported in which unexpected systemic hypersensitivity reactions occurred in patients dialyzed with polysulfone- or polyethersulfone-biocompatible membranes in the absence of other risk factors. The pathomechanisms involved in these reactions are largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To characterize hypersensitivity reactions to polysulfone hemodialysis using clinical and laboratory data and to identify biomarkers suitable for endotype identification and diagnosis. METHODS: We prospectively collected data from 29 patients with suspected hypersensitivity rea

Curcumin Accelerates the Lateral Motion of DPPC Membranes.

Curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, has attracted attention due to its potential anti-inflammatory, anticancer, wound-healing, and antioxidant properties. Though curcumin efficacy is related to its interaction with biomembranes, there are few reports on the effects of curcumin on the lateral motion of lipids, a fundamental process in the cell membrane. Employing the quasielastic neutron scattering technique, we explore the effects of curcumin on the lateral diffusion of the dipalmotylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) membrane. Our investigation is also supported by Fourier transform infrared s

Structure of benzothiadiazine at zwitterionic phospholipid cell membranes.

The use of drugs derived from benzothiadiazine, which is a bicyclic heterocyclic benzene derivative, has become a widespread treatment for diseases such as hypertension (treated with diuretics such as bendroflumethiazide or chlorothiazide), low blood sugar (treated with non-diuretic diazoxide), or the human immunodeficiency virus, among others. In this work, we have investigated the interactions of benzothiadiazine with the basic components of cell membranes and solvents, such as phospholipids, cholesterol, ions, and water. The analysis of the mutual microscopic interactions is of central impo

Spontaneous version after preterm prelabor rupture of membranes.

BACKGROUND: Preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM), defined as rupture of membranes before the onset of labor at < 37 weeks' gestation, affects approximately 3% of all pregnancies. For PPROM prior to 34 weeks' gestation, in the absence of contraindications to expectant management, antibiotics are administered to increase the latency period and reduce the incidence of maternal and neonatal infection. The latency period additionally provides an opportunity for fetal presentation to change, which impacts the mode of delivery. It is important to better understand the incidence of spontaneou

Antibacterial activity of antimicrobial peptide-conjugated nanofibrous membranes.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered as novel potential alternatives to antibiotics against increasing number of multi drug resistant (MDR) pathogens. Although AMPs have shown strong antimicrobial activity against gram-negative or gram-positive microorganisms, AMP conjugated biomaterials that are effective against MDR microorganisms are yet to be developed. Herein, the potential use of (RWRWRWRW)-NH2 (AMP-1) and KRFRIRVRV-NH2 (AMP-2) peptide conjugated electrospun polylactic-co-glycolic-acid (PLGA) nanofibers (NFs) fabricated and their antimicrobial effect by themselves and in their du

Giant Superelastic Piezoelectricity in Flexible Ferroelectric BaTiO3 Membranes.

Mechanical displacement in commonly used piezoelectric materials is typically restricted to linear or biaxial in nature and to a few percent of the material dimensions. Here, we show that free-standing BaTiO3 membranes exhibit nonconventional electromechanical coupling. Under an external electric field, these superelastic membranes undergo controllable and reversible "sushi-rolling-like" 180° folding-unfolding cycles. This crease-free folding is mediated by charged ferroelectric domains, leading to giant >3.8 and 4.6 μm displacements for a 30 nm thick membrane at room temperature and 60 °C, re

Stimuli-Responsive Membranes through Sustainable Aqueous Phase Separation.

Polymeric membranes are used on huge scales for kidney dialysis, wastewater treatment, and drinking water production. However, almost all polymeric membranes are fabricated by a process reliant on the use of unsustainable, expensive, and reprotoxic dipolar aprotic solvents. In this work, we propose an aqueous phase separation approach for preparing porous membrane films. Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP), a pH-responsive polymer, is first dissolved at low pH where the polymer is charged and subsequently cast as a thin film. Switching to a high pH where the polymer is uncharged and insoluble results

Study of Biocompatibility of Membranes in Online Hemodiafiltration.

BACKGROUND: The biocompatibility of dialysis membranes is a determining factor in avoiding chronic microinflammation in patients under haemodialysis. Lower biocompatibility has been related to increased inflammatory status, which is known to be associated with cardiovascular events. Classically, cellulose membranes have been considered bioincompatible. A new-generation of asymmetric cellulose triacetate (CTA) membranes allows the performance of high convective transport techniques, but there have been no studies of their biocompatibility. The aim of the present study was to analyze and compare

The potent effect of mycolactone on lipid membranes.

Mycolactone is a lipid-like endotoxin synthesized by an environmental human pathogen, Mycobacterium ulcerans, the causal agent of Buruli ulcer disease. Mycolactone has pleiotropic effects on fundamental cellular processes (cell adhesion, cell death and inflammation). Various cellular targets of mycolactone have been identified and a literature survey revealed that most of these targets are membrane receptors residing in ordered plasma membrane nanodomains, within which their functionalities can be modulated. We investigated the capacity of mycolactone to interact with membranes, to evaluate it

Hanatoxin inserts into phospholipid membranes without pore formation.

Hanatoxin (HaTx), a 35-residue polypeptide from spider venom, functions as an inhibitor of Kv2.1 channels by interacting with phospholipids prior to affecting the voltage-sensor. However, how this water-soluble peptide modifies the gating remains poorly understood, as the voltage-sensor is deeply embedded within the bilayer. To determine how HaTx interacts with phospholipid bilayers, in this study, we examined the toxin-induced partitioning of liposomal membranes. HPLC-results from high-speed spin-down vesicles with HaTx demonstrated direct binding. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and leakage a

Preparation of succinylated cellulose membranes for functionalization purposes.

The anhydroglucose chains of cellulose possess hydroxyls that facilitate different chemical modification strategies to expand on, or provide new applications for membranes produced by the bacteria Gluconacetobacter xylinus. Conjugation with biomolecules such as proteins, especially by the amine groups, is of great value and interest for the production of biomaterial derivatives from bacterial cellulose. To assist in these modifications, cellulose was succinylated in order to prevent steric hindrance and to create an attachment point for conjugation. Bacterial cellulose membranes were first tre

[Involvement of mucous membranes in autoimmune bullous diseases].

Autoimmune bullous diseases are characterized by intraepidermal or subepidermal autoantibody deposition that leads to blisters and secondary erosion. Mucous membranes are frequently affected in pemphigus vulgaris and always involved in cicatricial and mucosal pemphigoid. Mucosal lesions are detected less frequently in patients with bullous pemphigoid or epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. The diagnosis of autoimmune bullous disorders is based on determination of the subtype of autoantibodies bound in the skin and the clinical picture. Treatment is based on immunosuppression related to the type of

Amyloid-carbon hybrid membranes for universal water purification.

Industrial development, energy production and mining have led to dramatically increased levels of environmental pollutants such as heavy metal ions, metal cyanides and nuclear waste. Current technologies for purifying contaminated waters are typically expensive and ion specific, and there is therefore a significant need for new approaches. Here, we report inexpensive hybrid membranes made from protein amyloid fibrils and activated porous carbon that can be used to remove heavy metal ions and radioactive waste from water. During filtration, the concentration of heavy metal ions drops by three t
