Evaluation of a Modified Corsi Task to Assess Visuospatial Short-Term Memory in Young Children With Down Syndrome.

Short-term memory (STM) challenges are often observed in children with Down syndrome (DS), but existing early STM measures introduce measurement confounds in this population. To address the need for valid early STM measures for future DS interventions, this study evaluated the psychometric properties of a modified Corsi Span task, administered to 110 children with DS. Results indicated that the modified Corsi task has feasibility in the age range of 5-8 years and is scalable across chronological and mental ages. Minimal practice effects and evidence of test-retest reliability and convergent va

Stairway to memory: Left-hemispheric alpha dynamics index the progressive loading of items into a short-term store.

The encoding, maintenance, and subsequent retrieval of memories over short time intervals is an essential cognitive function. Load effects on the neural dynamics supporting the maintenance of short-term memories have been well studied, but experimental design limitations have hindered the study of similar effects during the encoding of information into online memory stores. Theoretically, the active encoding of complex visual stimuli into memory must also recruit neural resources in a manner that scales with memory load. Understanding the neural systems supporting this encoding load effect is

Verbal Short-Term Memory Deficits in Chinese Children with Dyslexia may not be a Problem with the Activation of Phonological Representations.

This study explored the underlying mechanism of the verbal short-term memory deficit in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia. Twenty-four children with dyslexia and 28 age-matched normal readers participated in the study. They were required to memorize a visually presented series of six Chinese characters and identify them from a list also including code-specific distracters and non-code-specific distracters. Error rates were recorded and were higher for code-specific distracters in all three conditions, revealing phonological, visual, and semantic similarity effects respectively. Grou

"The W and M are mixing me up": use of a visual code in verbal short-term memory tasks.

When normal participants are presented with written verbal short-term memory tasks (e.g., remembering a set of letters for immediate spoken recall) there is evidence to suggest that the information is re-coded into phonological form. This paper presents a single case study of MJK whose reading follows the pattern of phonological dyslexia. In short-term memory tasks MJK does not phonologically re-code written materials but, it is argued, uses a visual code. There are three main lines of evidence for this, (a) MJK tends to substitute visually similar items for one another, (b) her performance is

Application of bi-directional long short-term memory in separating NO and SO2 ultraviolet differential absorption spectrum signals.

To safeguard the environment, it is crucial to monitor the emissions of nitrogen oxide (NO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), harmful pollutants generated during fossil fuel combustion in industries. However, accurately measuring ultra-low concentrations of SO2 and NO remains a challenge. In this study, we developed an optical measurement system based on ultraviolet differential optical absorption spectroscopy (UV-DOAS) to address this issue. The 200-230 nm cross-sensitivity band was chosen for SO2 and NO. Experimental data with a mixed gas concentration range of 1-25 ppm for SO2 and NO was utilized.

Tonal structures benefit short-term memory for real music: Evidence from non-musicians and individuals with congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of music processing, which includes impaired pitch memory, associated to abnormalities in the right fronto-temporal network. Previous research has shown that tonal structures (as defined by the Western musical system) improve short-term memory performance for short tone sequences (in comparison to atonal versions) in non-musician listeners, but the tonal structures only benefited response times in amusic individuals. We here tested the potential benefit of tonal structures for short-term memory with more complex musical material. Congenital am

Predicting the Spatial-Temporal Distribution of Human Brucellosis in Europe Based on Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory Network.

Brucellosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by brucellae or other bacteria directly invading human body. Brucellosis presents the aggregation characteristics and periodic law of infectious diseases in temporal and spatial distribution. Taking major European countries as an example, this study established the temporal and spatial distribution sequence of brucellosis, analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of brucellosis, and quantitatively predicted its epidemic law by using different traditional or machine learning models. This paper indicates that the epidemic o

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate improves cardiac hypertrophy and short-term memory deficits in a Williams-Beuren syndrome mouse model.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a heterozygous deletion of 26-28 genes at chromosome band 7q11.23. The complete deletion (CD) mouse model mimics the most common deletion found in WBS patients and recapitulates most neurologic features of the disorder along with some cardiovascular manifestations leading to significant cardiac hypertrophy with increased cardiomyocytes' size. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant catechin found in green tea, has been associated with potential health benefits, both on cognition and cardiovascular phenotypes

Short-term social memory deficits in adult female mice exposed to tannery effluent and possible mechanism of action.

The accumulated organic residues in tannery-plant courtyards are an eating attraction to small rodents; however, the contact of these animals with these residues may change their social behavior. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate whether the exposure to tannery effluent (TE) can damage the social recognition memory of female Swiss mice, as well as to assess whether vitamin C supplementation could provide information about how TE constituents can damage these animals' memory. We have observed that resident females exposed to TE (without vitamin supplementation) did not explor

Maternal drinking during pregnancy: attention and short-term memory in 14-year-old offspring--a longitudinal prospective study.

A large and compelling experimental literature has documented the adverse impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain of the offspring. This is the first report of adolescent attention/memory performance and its relationship with prenatal alcohol exposure in a population-based, longitudinal, prospective study (n = 462) involving substantial covariate control and "blind" examiners. Prenatal alcohol exposure was significantly related to attention/memory deficits in a dose-dependent fashion. A latent variable reflecting 13 measures of maternal drinking was correlated 0.26 with a l

Impairment in processing meaningless verbal material in several modalities: the relationship between short-term memory and phonological skills.

Phonological processing abilities were studied in a patient who, following focal brain damage, showed selective impairment in non-word reading, writing, and repetition and also a severe short-term memory (STM) deficit specific for auditorily presented verbal material. The patient could execute tasks involving phonemic manipulation and awareness perfectly. Our data, in contrast with earlier observations in a case of developmental phonological dyslexia, show that acquired impairment in non-word reading, writing, repetition, and immediate memory may occur despite good phonological processing abil

Gallbladder disease diagnosis from ultrasound using squeeze-and-excitation capsule network with convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory.

The gallbladder is a small, hollow organ positioned beneath the liver, primarily responsible for temporarily storing bile. Bile is a fluid formed by the liver that helps digestion. There are various types of gallbladder disease. Early diagnosis and identification are crucial for effective treatment of gallbladder disorders. Poor medical outcomes and improved patient symptoms may result from errors or delays in diagnosis. Numerous symptoms and signs, particularly those associated with gallbladder disorder, might be blurred. As a result, medical specialists must understand and interpret ultrasou

The CD74 inhibitor DRhQ improves short-term memory and mitochondrial function in 5xFAD mouse model of Aβ accumulation.

Neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction are early events in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and contribute to neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. Evidence suggests that the inflammatory axis mediated by macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) binding to its receptor, CD74, plays an important role in many central nervous system (CNS) disorders such as AD. Our group has developed DRhQ, a novel CD74 binding construct which competitively inhibits MIF binding, blocks macrophage activation and migration into the CNS, enhances anti-inflammatory microglia cell numbers and reduces pro-inf

Cross-frequency coupling in cortico-hippocampal networks supports the maintenance of sequential auditory information in short-term memory.

It has been suggested that cross-frequency coupling in cortico-hippocampal networks enables the maintenance of multiple visuo-spatial items in working memory. However, whether this mechanism acts as a global neural code for memory retention across sensory modalities remains to be demonstrated. Intracranial EEG data were recorded while drug-resistant patients with epilepsy performed a delayed matched-to-sample task with tone sequences. We manipulated task difficulty by varying the memory load and the duration of the silent retention period between the to-be-compared sequences. We show that the

Long short term memory networks for predicting resilient Modulus of stabilized base material subject to wet-dry cycles.

The resilient modulus (MR) of different pavement materials is one of the most important input parameters for the mechanistic-empirical pavement design approach. The dynamic triaxial test is the most often used method for evaluating the MR, although it is expensive, time-consuming, and requires specialized lab facilities. The purpose of this study is to establish a new model based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for predicting the MR of stabilized base materials with various additives during wet-dry cycles (WDC). A laboratory dataset of 704 records has been used using input parameters

Epileptic Seizure Detection with an End-to-End Temporal Convolutional Network and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Model.

Automatic seizure detection plays a key role in assisting clinicians for rapid diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. In view of the parallelism of temporal convolutional network (TCN) and the capability of bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) in mining the long-range dependency of multi-channel time-series, we propose an automatic seizure detection method with a novel end-to-end TCN-BiLSTM model in this work. First, raw EEG is filtered with a 0.5-45 Hz band-pass filter, and the filtered data are input into the proposed TCN-BiLSTM network for feature extraction and classification. Post-

A Stacked Long Short-Term Memory Approach for Predictive Blood Glucose Monitoring in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a subtype of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Managing blood glucose (BG) within the healthy physiological range can reduce clinical complications for women with gestational diabetes. The objectives of this study are to (1) develop benchmark glucose prediction models with long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network models using time-series data collected from the GDm-Health platform, (2) compare the prediction accuracy with published results, and (3) suggest an optimized clinical review schedule with the potential to reduce the overall

Dissociating Long and Short-term Memory in Three-Month-Old Infants Using the Mismatch Response to Voice Stimuli.

Auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) have been successfully used in adults as well as in newborns to discriminate recall of longer-term and shorter-term memories. Specifically the Mismatch Response (MMR) to deviant stimuli of an oddball paradigm is larger if the deviant stimuli are highly familiar (i.e., retrieved from long-term memory) than if they are unfamiliar, representing an immediate change to the standard stimuli kept in short-term memory. Here, we aimed to extend previous findings indicating a differential MMR to familiar and unfamiliar deviants in newborns (Beauchemin et al., 201
