Diazepam and memory: retrograde facilitation produced by interference reduction.

Although diazepam (Valium) reduces learning and memory of information presented after administration (anterograde amnesia), in some cases it improves retention of predrug information (retrograde facilitation). Three experiments examined the magnitude and the conditions for producing retrograde facilitation and tested three hypotheses about the cause of memory enhancement. Differential effort and enhanced consolidation explanations were rejected in favor of a reduced interference interpretation. Improvement in predrug memory occurs because poor postdrug learning reduces the amount of new inform

Importance of Control Groups for Evaluating Long-Term Behavioral and Cognitive Outcomes of Controlled Cortical Impact in Immature Rats.

Therapies are limited for pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI), especially for the very young who can experience long-term consequences to learning, memory, and social behavior. Animal models of pediatric TBI have yielded mechanistic insights, but demonstration of clinically relevant long-term behavioral and/or cognitive deficits has been challenging. We characterized short- and long-term outcomes in a controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of pediatric TBI using a panel of tests between 2 weeks and ∼4 months after injury. Male rats with CCI at postnatal Day (PND) 10 were compared with three

Post-learning REM sleep deprivation impairs long-term memory: reversal by acute nicotine treatment.

Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD) is associated with spatial learning and memory impairment. During REM-SD, an increase in nicotine consumption among habitual smokers and initiation of tobacco use by non-smokers have been reported. We have shown recently that nicotine treatment prevented learning and memory impairments associated with REM-SD. We now report the interactive effects of post-learning REM-SD and/or nicotine. The animals were first trained on the radial arm water maze (RAWM) task, then they were REM-sleep deprived using the modified multiple platform paradigm for 24h. Du

Cognitive impairment differs between neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the frequency and pattern of cognitive impairment (CI) between patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: A total of 82 NMOSD patients, 58 MS patients, and 45 healthy controls (HCs) underwent a neuropsychological assessment. RESULTS: CI was observed in 29% of NMOSD and 50% of MS patients (p < 0.001); CI was considered present if a patient scored lower than the fifth percentile compared with HCs in at least three domains. A lower frequency of CI was consistently found when CI was indicated by at least two failed tes

What are the elements of motivation for acquisition of conditioned taste aversion?

The pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis is capable of being classically conditioned to avoid food and to consolidate this aversion into a long-term memory (LTM). Previous studies have shown that the length of food deprivation is important for both the acquisition of taste aversion and its consolidation into LTM, which is referred to as conditioned taste aversion (CTA). Here we tested the hypothesis that the hemolymph glucose concentration is an important factor in the learning and memory of CTA. One-day food deprivation resulted in the best learning and memory, whereas more prolonged food deprivation

The impact of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with interim testing on spatial route learning in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia have drawn widespread attention. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can modulate cognitive processes by altering neuronal excitability. Previous studies have found that interim testing can enhance spatial route learning and memory in patients with schizophrenia. However, there has been limited research on the combined effects of these two methods on spatial route learning in these patients. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the combination of tDCS and interim testing can effectively contribute to the maintenance of spat

Amphetamine-induced memory impairment in a discriminative avoidance task is state-dependent in mice.

In both humans and laboratory animals, the reports of cognitive effects following acute amphetamine (Amph) administration are mixed and depend, for example, on the timing of administration (e.g. before or after task acquisition) and/or on the memory model used. Besides its cognitive effects, Amph produces other important behavioural effects, including alterations in anxiety and general activity, which could modify the subject's internal state, thereby facilitating state-dependent learning. Importantly, state-dependency has been linked to drug dependence in humans. This study evaluates the role

Associations of baseline and longitudinal change in cerebellum volume with age-related changes in verbal learning and memory.

The cerebellum is involved in higher-order cognitive functions, e.g., learning and memory, and is susceptible to age-related atrophy. Yet, the cerebellum's role in age-related cognitive decline remains largely unknown. We investigated cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between cerebellar volume and verbal learning and memory. Linear mixed effects models and partial correlations were used to examine the relationship between changes in cerebellum volumes (total cerebellum, cerebellum white matter [WM], cerebellum hemisphere gray matter [GM], and cerebellum vermis subregions) and chang

Familiar observers attenuate surgery-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction in mice.

AIMS: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common complication associated with poor outcome. Our previous study has shown that living with familiar observers in the same cage reduces anxiety of mice with surgery. Anxiety can impair learning and memory. Thus, this study was designed to determine whether living with familiar observers attenuated the dysfunction of learning and memory of mice with surgery. METHODS: Six- to eight-week-old CD-1 male mice or 18-month-old C57BL/6 male mice had left carotid artery exposure under isoflurane anesthesia. They lived with non-surgery male mice

Practice Effects and Long Delays: A Case Report Exploring a Novel Approach to Detecting Accelerated Long-Term Forgetting.

OBJECTIVE: Accelerated Long-Term Forgetting (ALF) is when newly learned information "decays" faster than expected over an extended period and is associated with temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE). There is no well-established method for assessing ALF despite its apparent prevalence. We hypothesized that evidencing an absence of practice effects may represent an effective approach to detecting ALF. We sought to determine if this method, along with the long-delay memory tests, could evidence ALF in a single case. METHOD: We present a 66-year-old male with TLE who had memory complaints despite a stabl

Neuropsychological outcomes of traumatic brain injury and substance abuse in a New Zealand prison population.

Fifty subjects with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or substance use, completed neuropsychological measures of short and long term verbal and visual memory, information processing, motor speed and co-ordination, executive functioning, and malingering. All subjects performed below norms on tests of verbal memory and verbal abstract thinking, but overall no differences were found due to either severity of TBI or level of substance use. Maori subjects obtained the lowest scores on tests of verbal ability, but also reported higher rates of TBI and substance use, which is presumed to

Fast improvement of verbal memory function after left temporal tumour resection.

CASE REPORT: A 7-y-old, right-handed girl presented at our clinic with complex partial seizures, behavioural problems and word-finding difficulties. Clinical examination was normal, but electroencephalogram revealed bilateral epileptic discharges in the temporal and paracentral leads. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intracerebral mass in the left mesial temporal lobe in the areas of the gyrus temporooccipitalis medialis and gyrus parahippocampalis. Neuropsychological testing brought to light an above-average general intelligence, but the girl performed below average in verbal memory tests

4-Methylumbelliferone (4-MU) Improves Learning and Memory After Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the sixth leading cause of death and lifelong disability for millions of people in the United States. Cerebral ischemia leads to oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, inflammation, and apoptosis; additionally, impairment in memory and learning occurs in the majority of subjects with ischemic stroke. The lack of definitive treatment has sparked extensive research into novel therapeutic strategies, including the use of 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), a coumarin derivative with potential neuroprotective properties. The present study examines the impact of 4-MU on reducing cerebral

A step-by-step approach to minimally photothrombotic ischemic stroke in the hippocampal region that simulates human stroke.

The hippocampal structure, characterized by blood vessels with an average diameter of 0.5 mm, exhibits a significant vulnerability to ischemic conditions and is the critical region in the learning process and memory establishment. Male mice (n = 30) were divided into three groups (each group n = 10). 1) Rose Bengal group, 2) Laser group, 3) Rose Bengal + Laser group. Mice were placed in a stereotaxic device. An optical fiber was positioned above the ascending part of the hippocampal fissure and illuminated for 15 min using a previously injected intraperitoneal Rose Bengal dye. The Passive avoi

Voluntary exercise impact on cognitive impairments in sleep-deprived intact female rats.

Sleep loss is a common problem in modern societies affecting different aspects of individuals' lives. Many studies have reported that sleep deprivation (SD) leads to impairments in various types of learning and memory. Physical exercise has been suggested to attenuate the cognitive impairments induced by sleep deprivation in male rats. Our previous studies have shown that forced exercise by treadmill improved learning and memory impairments following SD. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of voluntary exercise by running wheel on cognitive, motor and anxiety-like behav

[Cognitive impairment after accidental high-dose corticosteroid therapy].

Synthetic glucocorticosteroids can induce various severe mental disorders. Persisting cognitive disorder represents a rare complication of corticoid therapy involving memory, concentration, attention, or occupational performance. We observed the effects of a 20-day self-induced high-dose corticosteroid treatment on the cognitive functions in a 54-year-old patient. Having excluded dementia due to other organic causes, we examined the patient neuropsychologically immediately at the end of the steroid therapy and at follow-up (1, 2, 4, and 6 months). The initial tests showed seriously impaired fu

Odor-Cued Targeted Reactivation Was Unable to Selectively Benefit Declarative Memories During Sleep.

Declarative memories are reactivated-and thereby consolidated-during sleep. Real-life memories are typically nested hierarchically (e.g., memory for making coffee nested within memory for one's morning routine). We tested the specificity of memory reactivation during sleep in humans: is it limited to low-tier items or does it extend to wider contexts? To test this, we adapted a well-replicated design using targeted memory reactivation, which uses non-invasive sensory cues to preferentially reactivate memories during sleep. Thirty-two participants (18 women and 14 men) learned two sets of objec

Testing the hybrid battery approach to evaluating sports-related concussion in the National Hockey League: A factor analytic study.

Objective: There has been an increased interest in the use of "Hybrid" neuropsychological test batteries to evaluate neurocognitive functioning prior to and following sports-related concussion. Typically, these test batteries include a combination of traditional "paper and pencil" (P&P) and computerized measures. The National Hockey League (NHL) employs a Hybrid approach consisting of ImPACT and a brief battery of P&P measures. The purpose of this paper was to examine the NHL's Hybrid model by means of factor analytic techniques in order to determine the extent to which the measures included i

Symptomatic remission and neurocognitive functioning in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: A cross-sectional study was conducted in participants with schizophrenia to explore a potential association between the patients' remission status and neurocognitive functioning and to examine whether these factors have an impact on functional outcome. METHOD: Psychopathological symptoms were rated by means of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale with symptom remission being assessed by applying the severity component of the recently proposed remission criteria. Tests for the cognitive battery were selected to cover domains known to be impaired in patients with schizophrenia.
