OBJECTIVE: Meniscectomy-induced osteoarthritis may be mechanically based. We asked how meniscectomy alters time-dependent deformation of physiologically loaded articular cartilage. We hypothesized that meniscectomy alters nominal strain in tibial articular cartilage, and that meniscectomy affects cartilage thickness recovery following cessation of loading.
METHODS: A cyclic load simulating normal gait was applied to four sheep knees. A custom device was used to obtain MR images of cartilage at 4.7T during cyclic loading. Articular cartilage thickness and nominal strain were measured every 2.5

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of meniscus injuries and subsequent reconstructions is increasing. Youth obesity has also increased and may put patients at a higher risk of post-operative complications.
HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Our aim was to assess post-operative medical and orthopaedic outcomes as well as healthcare utilization following meniscus repairs and meniscectomies in pediatric and adolescent patients. We hypothesized that patients with a higher BMI would exhibit higher rates of post-operative complications.
METHODS: The TriNetX database was queried for patients 21 years of age or younger wi

PURPOSE: The menisci are thought to modulate load transfer and to absorb shocks in the knee joint. No study has experimentally measured the meniscal functions in the intact, in vivo joint loaded by physiologically relevant muscular contractions.
METHODS: Right knee joints of seven New Zealand white rabbits were loaded using isometric contractions of the quadriceps femoris muscles controlled by femoral nerve stimulation. Isometric knee extensor torques at the maximal and two submaximal force levels were performed at knee angles of 70°, 90°, 110°, and 130°. Patellofemoral and tibiofemoral conta

OBJECTIVE: Synovitis is associated with pain and other symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA), and in patients with meniscal tears even in the absence of radiographic OA. Patients undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy were followed for 2 years to determine whether synovitis predicts post-operative symptoms.
DESIGN: Thirty-three patients scheduled for arthroscopy were recruited for this pilot study. Symptoms were assessed using a knee pain scale, the Lysholm score, and the short form-12 (SF-12(®)) pre-operatively and at 16 weeks, 1 year and 2 years post-operatively. Synovial

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic meniscectomy (AM) is a common procedure in middle-aged adults with degenerative meniscal tears. As many of these patients eventually require total knee arthroplasty (TKA), concerns have emerged regarding the potential impact of prior AM on TKA outcomes. This study evaluated whether a history of ipsilateral AM is associated with increased short- and mid-term complications following TKA.
METHODS: Using the PearlDiver national database, adult patients who underwent primary TKA for osteoarthritis between 2016 and 2022 with 1-year of follow-up and laterality available were

This article describes a case of an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy of a posteriorly flipped superior leaflet in a horizontal medial meniscus tear using the posterior transseptal portal. An arthroscopic partial meniscectomy for bucket handle or flap tears in medial or lateral compartments using ordinary portals is a relatively common procedure in irreparable cases. However, the posterior compartment of the knee is not readily accessible through ordinary arthroscopic portals. Therefore, it has been considered a blind spot. Through the posterior transseptal portal, surgeons can achieve excelle

We reexamined 43 patients with stable knees at a mean of 13 years after arthroscopic meniscectomy. The patients had a maximum age of 22 years at the operation and no patient had had previous surgery on the involved knee. At the follow-up examination, no differences in range of motion, muscle strength or tibial A/P displacement were seen between the operated and the nonoperated knees and 36 patients had no problem with their knee in daily life. Radiographic changes were found in the operated knee in 20 patients and in the nonoperated knee in 5 patients. 8 patients had a reduction of the joint s

OBJECTIVE: Concomitant meniscal injuries accompany 40%-60% of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. Surgeons often face a clinical choice between meniscal repair, which prioritizes long-term joint preservation, and partial meniscectomy, which is traditionally perceived to facilitate earlier functional recovery. Despite the biological advantages of repair, persistent concerns remain that its restrictive postoperative protocols might impede mid-term functional performance compared to meniscectomy. This study aims to compare quadriceps/hamstring strength, dynamic balance, functional hop perf

PURPOSE: To identify risk factors for opioid consumption after arthroscopic meniscectomy using a large national database.
METHODS: Patients undergoing primary arthroscopic meniscectomy from 2007 to 2016 were retrospectively accessed from the Humana database. Patients were categorized as those who filled opioid prescriptions within 3 months (OU), within 1 month (A-OU), between 1 and 3 months (C-OU), and never filled opioid prescriptions (N-OU) before surgery. Rates of opioid use were evaluated preoperatively and longitudinally tracked for each cohort. Prolonged opioid use was defined as contin

PURPOSE: This study attempts to establish whether local adiposity of the knee at the level of the joint line is associated with alterations in synovial fluid biomarker concentrations in patients undergoing ACL reconstruction with or without an associated meniscectomy.
METHODS: Patients undergoing ACL reconstruction were prospectively enrolled at the time of surgery from July 2011 to January 2015. Synovial fluid samples were collected just prior to incision and the concentrations of 10 biomarkers of interest were determined using a multiplex magnetic bead immunoassay. Knee adiposity was assess

OBJECTIVE: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Many of those with OA have imaging evidence of a meniscal tear which can be treated with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) or nonoperatively. If symptoms persist after meniscal tear treatment, a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often offered if patients have concomitant advanced OA. We sought to assess differences in rates of TKA after five years in patients with meniscal tear who were treated with APM vs nonoperative treatments using existing literature.
DESIGN: Using the PubMed database, we performed a sys

INTRODUCTION: Causality for postarthroscopic osteonecrosis of the knee is unknown, and related mechanisms have been poorly characterized.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report describes a case of a 69-year-old man with subchondral fracture occurring after arthroscopic meniscectomy using a radiofrequency assisted shaver. The patient experienced increasingly intense knee pain 10 months after the meniscectomy. MR imaging revealed postarthroscopic osteonecrosis of the knee in the femoral medial condyle, requiring unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. A mid-coronal cut section of the resected medial fem

BACKGROUND: Treating lateral meniscal injuries in elite athletes is challenging because of the high demands on knee function and the need for rapid return to play (RTP). Although meniscal repair is often recommended, data are lacking that compare outcomes of partial meniscectomy and repair in elite athletes with isolated lateral meniscal tears.
PURPOSE: To evaluate subsequent surgery after the treatment of isolated lateral meniscal tears and to compare RTP, career longevity, and performance level between meniscal repair and partial meniscectomy in professional soccer players.
