BACKGROUND: In the academic trauma unit during initial evaluation and resuscitation of trauma victims, central venous catheters are often placed by multiple operators. There are few data on compliance with accepted, standard sterile practices during such procedures.
METHODS: Prospective data were tabulated from video capture of 144 consecutive central venous catheterizations in a trauma resuscitation unit, during peak hours, by a team of trained video technicians. The physicians were surgical and emergency medicine residents. The number of primary operators (trainees) and secondary operators

The U.S. Veterans Health Administration launched a national mentoring program for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 2008 to support the delivery of evidence-based psychotherapies by bridging mental health operations and frontline clinical care. This article describes the program's evolution and indicators of its success. Program leadership clarified roles and responsibilities for involved staff, developed a unified set of expectations for high-quality PTSD specialty care, leveraged administrative data to support context-specific data monitoring and feedback systems, and partnered with re

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted almost all sectors of academic training and research, but the impact on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) research mentoring has yet to be documented. We present the perspectives of diverse, experienced mentors in a range of HIV research disciplines on the impact of COVID-19 on mentoring the next generation of HIV researchers. In November to December, 2020, we used an online data collection platform to cross-sectionally query previously-trained HIV mentors on the challenges related to mentoring during the pandemic, surprising/positive aspects of mentoring in tha

Norman McOmish Dott (1897-1973) developed surgical neurology in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was a scholar of worldwide renown. One of Dott's most notable contributions to neurosurgery was his understanding of hypothalamic physiology, mostly acquired through the comprehensive study of patients with lesions involving this region of the diencephalon, particularly craniopharyngiomas (CPs). Recognition of symptoms caused by hypothalamic disturbances allowed him to predict the accurate anatomical relationships between CPs and the hypothalamus, despite the rudimentary radiological methods available duri

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems among young women aged 16-24 have increased significantly in recent decades, and interventions are called for. Mentoring is a well-established preventative/promotive intervention for developing adolescents, but we have yet to fully understand how the relationship between the mentor and the protégé forms, develops, and closes. In this study, we focused on a female mentoring program implemented by a Swedish non-governmental organization, The Girls Zone. First, we examined the psychological and social characteristics of the young women who chose to take part in

BACKGROUND: Mentoring primary care doctors (PCDs) improves their competency and aids in integrating psychiatric care into primary care, especially in resource-constrained settings. This study evaluates the socio-demographic, diagnostic, and treatment profiling of instant collaborative video consultations (i-CVCs) and the diagnostic (domain-wise and disorder-wise) and treatment concordance of PCDs with tele-psychiatrists.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that was a part of a digitally driven capacity-building program that provided tele-mentoring to PCDs via i-CVCs with tele-psychiatri

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to intentionally develop and expand mentoring for junior faculty from underrepresented communities in the area of HIV research. Such a goal is increasingly recognized as essential across all scientific fields because profound disparities exist regarding which doctorally prepared individuals ultimately end up entering research fields in academic settings. The purpose of this article is to describe a novel inter-Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) program designed to support underrepresented scientists in research to address the HIV epidemic in the Mid-Atlantic re

BACKGROUND: Within a Job Demands-Resources Model framework, formal mentoring can be conceived as a job resource expressing the organization's support for new members, which may prevent their being at risk for burnout.
OBJECTIVE: This research aims at understanding the protective role of formal mentoring on burnout, through the effect of increasing learning personal resources. Specifically, we hypothesized that formal mentoring enhances newcomers' learning about job and social domains related to the new work context, thus leading to lower burnout.
METHODS: In order to test the hypotheses, a m

Just as my seniors nurtured me, I have continued to nurture those who come after me. Through my role as an intermediary, many of my mentors' knowledge and experience have been passed down to numerous mentees. I cannot be grateful enough to my workplaces, which brought together so many highly motivated mentees and allowed me to meet them. "One only half dies who leaves an image of themself in their mentees"; many poets have conveyed similar messages. Cultivating the next generation of leaders in stroke medicine, a field that continues to make remarkable strides, is undoubtedly one of our most i

Mentor Mother (MM) services are an evidenced-based peer support strategy embedded within prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) programs. The current MM strategy in Kenya provides monthly, facility-based, one-size-fits-all antiretroviral therapy adherence counselling and health education to women living with HIV (WLHIV) who are navigating PMTCT services. MMs receive a small monthly stipend as compensation for providing these services. We aimed to gather formative information from MMs and their client WLHIV, with the goal of developing an enhanced MM strategy that accounts fo

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis and other multiple long-term conditions disproportionately affect people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage, leading to complex and intersecting health and wellbeing needs. Peer mentorship can support self-management and complement condition specific care. Delivering effective peer mentorship remains challenging. The overall study aim was to develop and assess feasibility and perceived usefulness of a remotely delivered osteoarthritis peer mentorship intervention. This paper explores peer mentors' experiences of delivering the peer mentorship programme, their

BACKGROUND: A well-qualified workforce is critical to effective functioning of health systems and populations; however, skill gaps present a challenge in low-resource settings. While an emerging body of evidence suggests that mentorship can improve quality, access, and systems in African health settings by building the capacity of health providers, less is known about its implementation in surgery. We studied a novel surgical mentorship intervention as part of a safe surgery intervention (Safe Surgery 2020) in five rural Ethiopian facilities to understand factors affecting implementation of su

This paper explores positive and negative features of computer assisted therapy (CAT) delivered by mentors to homeless drug users (HDUs) living in hostels. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 HDUs and 15 mentors (all hostel staff) at the beginning and end of a 12-week CAT program. Findings indicate that successful delivery of the CAT relates to: 'program features' (e.g. its accessibility, flexibility, user-friendly interface); 'delivery context' (e.g. privacy, having appropriate computing equipment), 'client characteristics' (HDUs being recovery-focused and committed to using the pro

BACKGROUND: Birthing in health facilities in India has increased over the last few years, yet maternal and neonatal mortality rates remain high. Clinical mentoring with case sheets or checklists for nurses is viewed as essential for on-going knowledge transfer, particularly where basic training is inadequate. This paper summarizes a study of the effect of such a programme on staff knowledge and skills in a randomized trial of 295 nurses working in 108 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Karnataka, India.
METHODS: Stratifying by district, half of the PHCs were randomly assigned to be intervention
