Indicator ability of biosubstances in monitoring the moderate occupational exposure to toxic metals.

In order to improve the monitoring system, watching influence of toxic metals on human health in industrial plants, indicator properties of different biosubstances were compared. Four types of samples (whole blood, plasma, urine, and hair) from 263 workers of the "Khimprom" chemical plant (Novocheboksarsk, Russia) were subjected to multielement analysis by ICP-AES/ICP-MS. 19-25 chemical elements, including main toxic metals (Cd, Hg, Pb, etc.) were determined. The results were calculated with regard to workers' individual data on occupational exposure to chemical elements. Hair was found to be

Comments on occupational and environmental factors in the origin of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The review of the literature regarding non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and occupational and environmental factors presented at this workshop suggested associations with viruses, solvents, and hair dyes. A population-based case-control study among men from Iowa and Minnesota notes similar associations. Workers engaged in metal working, hair care, painting, and dry cleaning experienced nonsignificant excesses. Risks from specific exposures showed some variation by histological type. Both follicular and diffuse non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were associated with benzene. The diffuse type was linked to solvents ot

Determination of neopterin in urine of industrial workers by HPLC.

This study aimed to determine neopterin levels in the urine of industrial workers by the high-performance liquid chromatography method. Intra- and inter-day precision values for neopterin in urine were less than 3.14, and accuracy (relative error) was better than 3.00%. The limits of detection and quantification of neopterin were 0.3 and 1.0 ng/mL, respectively. Also, the developed method was applied to real samples to determine the neopterin levels in the urines of industrial workers, who have been exposed to various chemicals such as formaldehyde, heavy metals and thinners. Urine neopterin l

Pulmonary responses to welding fumes: role of metal constituents.

It is estimated that more than 1 million workers worldwide perform some type of welding as part of their work duties. Epidemiology studies have shown that a large number of welders experience some type of respiratory illness. Respiratory effects seen in full-time welders have included bronchitis, siderosis, asthma, and a possible increase in the incidence of lung cancer. Pulmonary infections are increased in terms of severity, duration, and frequency among welders. Inhalation exposure to welding fumes may vary due to differences in the materials used and methods employed. The chemical properti

[Aspects of enzymatic toxicology of metals. A review (author's transl)].

The adverse and beneficial effects of metals have occupied a great concern in many branches of biology for centuries, but their biochemical roles have been studied systematically only in the last four decades. Almost all the metals, especially those of high toxicity, bind readily to mercapto groups, and these are frequently important in enzyme systems. Furthermore, a large number of in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that toxic metals can replace essential metals in many of their metalloenzymes, with resultant changes in activity. Metals also bind to protein, phospholipid and nucleic acid

[Manicurists and pedicurists - occupation group at high risk of work-related dermatoses].

In recent years occupational skin and respiratory diseases have been more and more frequently diagnosed in small production and service enterprises. The awareness of occupational exposure and its possible health effects among their workers and employers is not sufficient. Beauty salons, in addition to hairdressers and beauticians, frequently employ manicurists and pedicurists. The workers often happen to perform various activities interchangeably. the health status of beauty salons workers has rarely been assessed. The most numerous reports concern hairdressers. [Liver and Kidney Function of E-waste Dismantling Workers and Potential Influencing Factors].

High levels of exposure to heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by e-waste dismantling workers has attracted increasing attention, but the health conditions of the workers are seldom reported. The liver and kidney functions of the workers were studied by comparing the blood indicators of the worker group with those of the control group. Moreover, factors affecting the liver and kidney functions, such as the sexuality, age, and working time, were identified using correlation analysis. The ratio of aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) and the direct bili

Epidemiologic study of occupational injuries among foreign and native workers in Taiwan.

This study was designed to compare the risk of occupational injuries in foreign workers compared to native workers in Taiwan. The cohort of foreign workers under study was constructed by records of legally registered workers migrated from foreign countries to Taiwan from July 1, 1991 to December 31, 1993. The native Taiwanese workers for comparison were labor-insured workers working in the same industries as foreign workers in 1992. The number of occupational injuries in the first year of employment were obtained by matching the cohort of foreign workers with the labor insurance payment record

Induction of systemic inflammation by welding fume exposure in office workers as well as welders in welding factories.

Welding fumes are metal particles of 1 µm or less generated during welding. Welding fumes generated in welding factories spread throughout the workplace. However, the effects of exposure have been measured primarily in welding workers, and no research has been conducted on the effects of fumes on workplace office workers. In this study, we recruited welding and office workers who worked in the same factories at ten workplaces in Japan, mainly in the Kyushu and Kanto regions, and separated their serum after blood sampling. We also obtained serum from the general subjects of Minami-Kagoshima Cit

Fragrance as an occupational allergen.

Sensitization to fragrance is believed to occur mainly outside the workplace. This study addresses the frequency of fragrance allergy in patch test patients of differing occupations during a 15 year period. The occupation most strongly associated with fragrance allergy in both sexes was health care work (positive tests in 11.7% of males and 10.4% of females). Retired individuals also had high rates of fragrance allergy (11.6% of males and 14.5% of females), and the prevalence of sensitization increased with advancing age. Health care workers and metal workers had statistically significantly hi

Impacts of pollutant emissions from brick kilns on environment and human health.

Occupational risk factors associated with traditional kiln technology are major drivers of respiratory symptoms and illnesses. The current research was designed to evaluate prevalence of selected disease and respiratory symptoms among workers at two types of brick kilns. A proportionate stratified random-sampling-based survey was conducted during 2024-2025; a total of 250 adult men were assessed using a translated version of American Thoracic Society Division of Lung Disease (ATS-DLD) questionnaire. Results of the study show that 60% of Bull's Trench Kiln (BTK) workers had diabetes mellitus, w

Using mobile audiometry (Wulira App) to assess noise induced hearing loss among industrial workers in Kampala, Uganda: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational noise is a common cause of hearing loss in low-income countries. Unfortunately, screening for hearing loss is rarely done due to technical and logistical challenges associated with pure tone audiometry. Wulira app is a valid and potentially cost-effective alternative to pure tone audiometry in screening for occupational hearing loss. We aimed to determine the prevalence of occupational hearing loss among workers in a metal industry company in Kampala district. METHODOLOGY: We recruited 354 participants conveniently from a steel and iron manufacturing industry in Kampa

Human exposure to toxic metals: factors influencing interpretation of biomonitoring results.

An important approach to assessment of risk from environmental and occupational exposures is biomonitoring which provides an estimate of the total dose absorbed and gives indirect access to determination of target site concentrations. It is also a tool for assessing residual exposure, when respiratory protection is used. The interest in biological effects from toxic metals has increased during the last decades, as large amounts of metals have been released into industrial areas, and it is estimated that approximately 150,000 Danish workers are exposed to various metals. Since biomonitoring res
