Removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals in soils by electrokinetic remediation.

In this work, the feasibility of electrokinetic remediation for the restoration of polluted soil with organic and inorganic compounds had been development and evaluated using a model soil sample. The model soil was prepared with kaolinite clay artificially polluted in the laboratory with chromium and an azo dye: Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The electromigration of Cr in a spiked kaolinite sample was studied in alkaline conditions. Despite of the high pH registered in the kaolinite sample (around pH 9.5), Cr migrated towards the cathode and it was accumulated in the cathode chamber forming a white p

Effect of heavy metals on the biodegradation of dibenzofuran in liquid medium.

The effect of heavy metals on the degradation of dibenzofuran by Sphingomonas wittichii RW1 was determined in liquid cultures. The results showed that 10mg/L cadmium, mercury and copper not only affected the growth of RW1 with dibenzofuran but also the ability of resting cells to degrade this compound. Growth and degradation were strongly inhibited by mercury, even at 1mg/L, while the inhibitory effect of cadmium and copper at the same concentration or at 5mg/L were negligible. In contrast, arsenic and lead did not affect degradation or growth, even at very high concentrations of 100mg/L. Subs

Ecotoxicity, phytotoxicity and extractability of heavy metals from different stabilised sewage sludges.

The presence of heavy metals in the sludges produced in wastewater treatment plants restricts their use for agricultural purposes. This study compares different types of sludges (aerobic, anaerobic, unstabilised and sludge from a waste stabilisation pond) in order to assess the extractability of heavy metals using simple extraction, water and DTPA. The stabilisation treatment undergone by the sludges influenced the heavy metals extractability. The least mineralised sludges (unstabilised and aerobic) showed higher metal extractability. The sewage sludges were subjected to chemical characterisat

Bioproduction of ferric sulfate used during heavy metals removal from sewage sludge.

Toxic metals removal from wastewater sewage sludge can be achieved through microbial processes involving Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The oxidation of ferrous ions by A. ferrooxidans, cultured in sewage sludge filtrate, was studied in both batch and continuous flow stirred tank reactors. Sewage sludge filtrate containing natural nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) was recovered as effluent following the dehydration of a primary and secondary sludge mixture. Batch and continuous flow stirred tank reactor tests demonstrated that A. ferrooxidans were able to grow and completely oxidize ferrous

Removal of heavy metals in a horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetland.

Constructed wetlands with horizontal sub-surface flow designed for the treatment of municipal sewage have been monitored extensively with respect to removal of organics (BOD5, COD), suspended solids, nutrients (N, P) and microbial pollution. However, the information on the removal and distribution of heavy and other metals in these systems are very limited because heavy metals do not constitute a major problem in wastewater from small villages with no industry. The measurements were carried out in a constructed wetland with sub-surface flow at Morina near Prague. Removal of metals in construct

The effect of heavy metals on the immune system at low concentrations.

The present study describes the effect of cadmium on lymphokines that cannot be directly traced to an allergen, or antigen in order to be able to explain various immunological processes. Exposure to various environmental pollutants is known to induce epithelial and inflammatory changes, characterized by a release of cytokines and other soluble mediators. Heavy metals like CdCl2 can induce, or inhibit the synthesis and expression of the inflammatory cytokines IL-1beta, IL-4, IL-6, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and ICAM-1. Normal human peripherial blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were exposed for differen

Heavy metals in human primary teeth: some factors influencing the metal concentrations.

Human primary teeth have been used as indicators of heavy metal exposure for several decades, but the knowledge about the influence of factors such as tooth type and the presence of caries and roots on metal concentrations is limited. Samples of tooth powder from more than 1200 Norwegian primary teeth without fillings have been analyzed for lead, zinc and cadmium content, and 554 of them for mercury. The material represents all groups of tooth types (incisors, canines and molars), carious and non-carious teeth, and teeth with and without roots. Here we investigate how tooth group and the prese

Heavy metals and the etiology of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

Heavy metals, such as iron and manganese, are involved in neurologic disease. Most often these diseases are associated with abnormal environmental exposures or abnormal accumulations of heavy metals in the body. There is increasing recognition that heavy metals normally present in the body also may play a role in disease pathogenesis through free radical formation. When a part of the brain known as the basal ganglia is affected, movements become disordered. Parkinson's disease is one of the most common movement disorders and is related to destruction of neurons in the substantia nigra pars com

The in vivo cross-linking of proteins and DNA by heavy metals.

Cross-linking of proteins to DNA in live, intact Novikoff ascites hepatoma cells exposed in vitro to different concentrations of CuSO4, Pb(NO3)2, HgCl2, and AlCl3 was studied. Protein-DNA complexes were separated by high-speed centrifugation of cells solubilized in buffered 4% sodium dodecyl sulfate and assayed by electrophoretic separation of proteins associated with the DNA-containing pellets. Concentration dependence experiments showed that the optimal cross-linking occurred at metal concentration of 0.5 mM for CuSO4, HgCl2, and AlCl3 while the optimal cross-linking for Pb(NO3)2 was at 5 mM

Succimer-coated wooden spoons for in situ removal of heavy metals in food.

Heavy metals in food present significant health risks; however, consumer-level solutions for reducing exposure remain limited. This study presents a novel consumer-focused solution in which succimer (an FDA-approved chelation therapy) is stably grafted onto the surface of a wooden spoon. Using a standard coupling reaction, succimer is covalently attached to lignin in the wood matrix through ester bond formation. Succimer-functionalized spoons elicit improved metal retention compared to the pristine wooden spoon. To demonstrate the efficacy of this food contact device, we tested its use during

Sustainable starch-microcellulose composite hydrogels for efficient removal of heavy metals from water.

This work investigates the development of sustainable composite hydrogels based on corn starch and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) derived from eucalyptus sawdust for the removal of copper from aqueous environments. The incorporation of MFC into the starch matrix reduced solubility from 55.2 % to 36.4 %, increased true density from 1.466 to 1.525 g/cm3, and decreased surface area with increasing MFC content (from 4.010 to 1.814 m2/g). The MFC presented the following metallic affinity order: Cu2+ > Mn3+ > Ni2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+ > Cr6+. Adsorption experiments showed enhanced Cu2+ removal with incre

Ecotoxicological Impacts of Heavy Metals on Medicinal Plant Quality and Rhizosphere Microbial Communities.

With the rapid expansion of industrial activities, the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment has become a serious threat to ecological security and public health. Rhizosphere microorganisms play a crucial role in supporting the growth and quality of medicinal plants by facilitating nutrient uptake and regulating hormonal balance. However, medicinal plants can absorb heavy metals from contaminated soils during growth, resulting in toxic metal accumulation in plant tissues and reduced efficacy of active compounds. At the same time, excessive heavy metal levels suppress rhizosphere micr

Triggering antibacterial activity of a common plant by biosorption of selected heavy metals.

The presented study proposes an efficient utilization of a common Thymus serpyllum L. (wild thyme) plant as a highly potent biosorbent of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions and the efficient interaction of the copper-laden plant with two opportunistic bacteria. Apart from biochars that are commonly used for adsorption, here we report the direct use of native plant, which is potentially interesting also for soil remediation. The highest adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions (qe = 12.66 and 53.13 mg g-1, respectively) was achieved after 10 and 30 min of adsorption, respectively. Moreover, the Cu-la

Potential strategies for phytoremediation of heavy metals from wastewater with circular bioeconomy approach.

Water pollution is an inextricable problem that stems from natural and human-related factors. Unfortunately, with rapid industrialization, the problem has escalated to alarming levels. The pollutants that contribute to water pollution include heavy metals (HMs), chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial byproducts. Numerous methods are used for treating HMs in wastewater, like ion exchange, membrane filtration, chemical precipitation, adsorption, and electrochemical treatment. But the remediation through the plant, i.e., phytoremediation is the most sustainable approach to r
