Changes of the mitotic index (MI) were studied in pig kidney (PS) cells infected either with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains Hypr and Ir-32, or with West Nile (WN) virus prototype strain, strains K-99 and E-13. The cell division was arrested by the infection (metaphase barrier). The effect of TBE virus strains was manifested by the appearance of lagging chromosomes while the action of WN virus strains by colchicine--like metaphases. The prototype TBE virus strain Hypr affected the chromosomes and mitotic apparatus of PS cells less markedly than did the freshly isolated Ir-32 strain

Six adjacent metaphases, each with the same cytogenetic aberration of a group D chromosome, most probably a No. 14, were observed in a field of a slide from a 96-hour culture of lymphocytes from an individual with ataxia-telangiectasia (AT). This paper considers the dose-effect relationship for unstable chromosome aberration yields in human lymphocytes in very low-dose range. Data are presented for (60)Co γ-ray doses of 0, 10, 20, 40 and 1000 mGy. More than 5,000 metaphases were scored for each data point at the very low doses, and each cell was double-checked using a semi-automated metaphase finding/relocation system. Aberration yields of dicentrics plus centric rings followed an excellent linear dose response down to zero dose; the yields were significantly above the control frequency from 20 mGy.

Immature mammalian oocytes reside in ovarian follicles with junctionally coupled granulosa cells. When released from a currently undefined meiotic arresting influence, these oocytes resume meiosis to progress from late diplotene (germinal vesicle stage) through the first meiotic division to metaphase II. Three species of the families Viviparidae and Pleuroceridae, the first intermediate host of paragonimiasis, metagonimiasis and echinostomiasis were studied cytologically. The observed diploid chromosome number was as follows: Semisulcospira libertina 36, S. dolichostoma 34, and Viviparus rivularis 64. The mitotic chromosome complement of S. libertina has nine metacentric pairs and nine submetacentric pairs, and S. dolichostoma has three metacentric pairs and 14 submetacentric pairs of chromosomes.
