Vibrational Excitations of Methane in the Framework of a Local-Mode Anharmonic Model.

The stretching and bending vibrations of methane are described in a local-mode anharmonic symmetry adapted model. Both Hecht- and Fermi-like interactions are considered. We start by establishing the Hamiltonian of the system in terms of internal coordinates and momenta. The Hamiltonian is then rewritten in terms of local creation (annihilation) operators a(dagger)(i)(a(i)), which are later anharmonized by means of the deformation of the harmonic oscillator algebra to the U(2) algebra. This procedure corresponds to the exact Morse result for the dominant matrix elements involved in the harmonic

Chlorinated methanes and liver injury: highlights of the past 50 years.

The chlorinated methanes, particularly carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, are classic models of liver injury and have developed into important experimental hepatoxicants over the past 50 years. Hepatocellular steatosis and necrosis are features of the acute lesion. Mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum as target sites are discussed. The sympathetic nervous system, hepatic hemodynamic alterations, and role of free radicals and biotransformation are considered. With carbon tetrachloride, lipid peroxidation and covalent binding to hepatic constituents have been dominant themes over the yea

Ineffectiveness of breath methane excretion as a diagnostic test for lactose malabsorption.

BACKGROUND: In clinical and field conditions, breath gas analysis has been widely used in evaluating carbohydrate digestion. A field study was performed to determine the prevalence of lactose malabsorption in Myanmar children and to evaluate the possibility of using breath methane excretion to indicate lactose malabsorption in a field situation. METHODS: The study population consisted of 118 children aged 1 to 12 years. A hydrogen breath test after a lactose meal (2 g/kg, maximum 50 g) was used as a standard test. RESULTS: Lactose malabsorption was detected in 16.7% of children aged 1 to 2.9

The possible role of breath methane measurement in detecting carbohydrate malabsorption.

To evaluate the possibility that measurement of breath methane (CH4) enhances the accuracy of breath hydrogen (H2) testing to diagnose carbohydrate malabsorption, breath CH4 concentration of healthy subjects was studied. Fasting breath CH4 concentration measured three times over a 30-minute period in 44 CH4-producing volunteers ranged from 5 to 120 ppm. Fluctuation of breath CH4 excretion exceeded 100% increase over fasting in 1 of 9 subjects who ingested a nonabsorbable, carbohydrate-free solution. Out of 13 subjects who had a false negative breath H2 response to lactulose, 11 had a CH4 perce

A mercury-catalyzed, high-yield system for the oxidation of methane to methanol.

A homogeneous system for the selective, catalytic oxidation of methane to methanol via methyl bisulfate is reported. The net reaction catalyzed by mercuric ions, Hg(II), is the oxidation of methane by concentrated sulfuric acid to produce methyl bisulfate, water, and sulfur dioxide. The reaction is efficient. At a methane conversion of 50 percent, 85 percent selectivity to methyl bisulfate ( approximately 43 percent yield; the major side product is carbon dioxide) was achieved at a molar productivity of 10(-7) mole per cubic centimeter per second and Hg(II) turnover frequency of 10(-3) per sec

Evaluating space-based methane detection through a one-year blind test.

Space-based remote sensing allows detection and monitoring of large, concentrated methane sources worldwide1. However, independent evaluation of instruments and algorithms is limited, and new satellites and artificial intelligence techniques have not been tested under controlled, single-blind conditions2. Here we conduct a year-long, single-blind test involving 746 events: 481 methane releases of 9.5-1,183.7 kg h-1 and 265 blank controls. We released metered methane quantities in Arizona, USA, coinciding with overpasses from 12 government, commercial and non-profit satellites. Fifteen analysis

Electrocatalytic valorization of methane: strategies and pathways toward value-added chemicals.

Methane (CH4), as the principal component of natural gas, shale gas, and combustible ice, serves as a strategic resource crucial for optimizing carbon utilization and reducing reliance on petroleum. Electrocatalytic methane conversion, driven by clean electrical energy, enables the selective transformation of methane under mild conditions, offering a promising alternative to conventional energy-intensive and high-emission processes. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in the electrocatalytic conversion of methane into high-value-added products. The article begins by explainin

Climate warming enhances aerobic methane emissions from invasive Raphidiopsis raciborskii blooms.

Freshwater ecosystems contribute approximately half of global methane emissions; phytoplankton-mediated aerobic methane production is a key process resolving the "methane paradox" in oxic surface waters. However, the role of invasive cyanobacteria in aerobic methane production and its regulation by temperature remain poorly understood. Here, we combined 7‑month in situ field monitoring in a subtropical drinking water reservoir, controlled laboratory incubations, and transcriptomic sequencing to elucidate the mechanisms linking blooms of the invasive cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii to f

Enteric methane emissions and mitigation strategies within pasture-based dairy systems.

Enteric methane is the dominant GHG emitted from pasture-based dairy systems, defined for this review as dairy systems in which grazed pasture makes up the majority of feed intake. This review summarizes the main drivers of methane emissions and the mitigation options available in these systems. Evidence indicates that cows offered high-nutritive-value perennial ryegrass pasture, characterized by high OM digestibility and ME, and moderate NDF content, have lower methane conversion factors (CH4 as a percentage of gross energy intake) and methane yields (g CH4/kg DMI) than values currently used

Physical Properties of Nanoconfined Methane Hydrate: Structure, Thermoelasticity, and Thermal Conductivity.

Large amounts of methane hydrate are trapped in natural porous media, such as marine sediments and permafrost. In this context, understanding the physical and physicochemical properties of confined methane hydrate, sometimes down to the nanoscale, is crucial for environmental and energy applications. Here, a molecular simulation strategy is employed to assess some important properties of nanoconfined methane hydrate: density, structural order parameters, thermal expansion, compressibility, and thermal conductivity. Confinement is found to affect only slightly the microscopic structure of metha

Bioelectrochemical stimulation enhances methane production and microbial stability in anaerobic digestion.

Bioelectrochemically improved anaerobic digestion (AD-BES) is a promising strategy to intensify biogas production and enhance process stability, yet validation on real feedstocks at relevant scale remains limited. This study compares a continuously fed AD-BES treating liquid agricultural digestate with a conventional AD reactor. Both reactors were operated under progressively reduced hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 40, 30 and 20 days to assess their performance under intensified conditions. Electrochemical monitoring confirmed biofilm establishment on both electrodes. While methane product

Genetic insights into enteric methane emissions in indoor-fed growing cattle.

Despite increasing interest in the genetic selection of ruminants for reduced enteric methane emissions, uncertainty remains on which methane trait definitions best reflect the exploitable genetic variation independent of traits already included in national cattle breeding programs. The present study aimed to explore the genetic variability in a range of methane-related traits in growing beef cattle and quantify the proportion of genetic variance in daily methane production that is independent of performance traits such as feed intake, growth, and body size. Methane and carbon dioxide emission

Interpretable Event-Driven Multisensor Risk-Evolution Analysis for Methane Early Warning.

Methane exceedance events in underground coal mines are often associated with progressive multisensor abnormal evolution processes involving operational, ventilation, environmental, and methane-drainage subsystems. Existing studies primarily focus on methane concentration prediction and provide limited interpretability regarding how abnormal evolution patterns emerge before threshold exceedance. To address this limitation, this study proposes an interpretable event-driven multisensor risk-evolution analysis framework for methane early warning. Methane exceedance events are first extracted from

Long-term GreenFeed monitoring of enteric methane emissions in lactating buffaloes.

The GreenFeed (GF) system is widely regarded as the silver standard for measuring individual enteric methane (CH4) emissions; however, it has not previously been used in dairy buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). This study aimed to perform long-term monitoring using the GF in lactating Mediterranean buffaloes to provide benchmark values for enteric CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and CH4 emission intensity, together with a characterization of CH4 emission patterns and animal-related factors. Additionally, seasonal variation in enteric CH4 emissions was evaluated. The study was conducted on a

Perspective: Enteric methane mitigation and its impact on livestock hydrogen emissions.

In a hydrogen-based economy future, hydrogen leakage is becoming an environmental concern. Ruminants naturally produce small amounts of hydrogen, which is emitted in the environment along with other fermentation gases, such as the GHG methane and carbon dioxide. Here, for the first time, we estimated hydrogen emissions from the global ruminant livestock at 527 kt/yr (95% CI: 399, 654), or about 3.5% (95% CI; 2.7, 4.4) of the global anthropogenic hydrogen emissions. When methanogenesis is decreased by various methane-mitigation practices, hydrogen emissions increase, raising questions regarding

Urban development elevates methane and carbon dioxide emission in headwater streams.

Urban development has been a significant force impacting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Our current knowledge on the exact effects of the magnitude and extent of urbanization on the magnitude of riverine methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and outgassing is still limited. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variations of CH4 and CO2 dynamics in three headwater streams that drain rapidly urbanizing areas in subtropical China. Field measurements and sampling were conducted during three cool-dry months and three warm-rainy months in 2024 at 19 sites that represented v

Light-driven methane conversion: unveiling methanol using a TiO2/TiOF2 photocatalyst.

A TiO2/TiOF2 composite has been synthesized through a hydrothermal method and characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance, SEM-EDX, TEM, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The percentage of exposed facet [001] and the composition of TiO2/TiOF2 in the composite were controlled by adjusting the amount of HF and hydrothermal temperature synthesis. Three crucial factors in the photocatalytic conversion of methane to methanol, including the photocatalyst, electron scavenger (FeCl2), and H2O2 were evaluated using a statistical approach. All factors were
