Laboratory measurements of the biologically mediated methylation of mercury (Hg) to the neurotoxin monomethylmercury (MMHg) often exhibit kinetics that are inconsistent with first-order kinetic models. Using time-resolved measurements of filter passing Hg and MMHg during methylation/demethylation assays, a multisite kinetic sorption model, and reanalyses of previous assays, we show that competing kinetic sorption reactions can lead to time-varying availability and apparent non-first-order kinetics in Hg methylation and MMHg demethylation. The new model employing a multisite kinetic sorption mo

OBJECTIVE: Very little is known about the relationship between postnatal methylmercury concentrations (via toenails as bioindicator) and behavioural characteristics of Pacific Island children living in New Zealand. The aim of this study was to explore the association between total mercury exposure and different domains of behavioural problems in Pacific children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of nine-year-old Pacific Island children resident in Auckland, New Zealand participated in this study. Total mercury was determined in biological samples (toenail clippings) on behavioural problems as

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that Whi2 enhances the toxicity of methylmercury in yeast. In the present study we examined the proteins known to interact with Whi2 to find those that influence the toxicity of methylmercury.
METHODS: Gene disruption and site-directed mutagenesis were employed to examine the relationship of mercury toxicity and palmitoylation. Protein palmitoylation was examined using the acyl-biotinyl exchange method. Protein-protein interactions were detected by immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting.
RESULTS: We found that deletion of Akr1, a palmitoyltransferase,

Mercury (Hg) methylation and methylmercury (MMHg) demethylation activity of periphyton biofilms from the industrially contaminated East Fork Poplar Creek, Tennessee (EFPC) were measured during 2014-2016 using stable Hg isotopic rate assays. 201HgII and MM202Hg were added to intact periphyton samples in ambient streamwater and the formation of MM201Hg and loss of MM202Hg were monitored over time and used to calculate first-order rate potentials for methylation and demethylation. The influences of location, temperature/season, light exposure and biofilm structure on methylation and demethylation

Mercury is a global pollutant that biomagnifies in food webs, placing wildlife at risk of reduced reproductive fitness and survival. Songbirds are the most diverse branch of the avian evolutionary tree; many are suffering persistent and serious population declines and we know that songbirds are frequently exposed to mercury pollution. Our objective was to determine the effects of environmentally relevant doses of mercury on reproductive success of songbirds exposed throughout their lives or only as adults. The two modes of exposure simulated philopatric species versus dispersive species, and a

Mercury (Hg) contamination in piscivorous birds, especially methylmercury (MeHg), has been drawing much attention worldwide in regard to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification in food chains. In this study on Hg in the soft tissues of white-tailed eagles (n = 22) and ospreys (n = 2) from Poland, total Hg (THg) range was 0.15-47.6 while MeHg range was 0.11-8.05 mg kg⁻¹ dry weight. In both species, median THg and MeHg concentrations were lower in the muscle and brain than in the liver and kidney. Median nephric residues were just under 3 and 5 mgTHg kg⁻¹ or 0.9 and 3.7 mgMeHg kg⁻¹ for white-ta

The present article reviews current knowledge and recent progress on the bioavailability and toxicity of mercury to aquatic primary producers. Mercury is a ubiquitous toxic trace element of global concern. At the base of the food web, primary producers are central for mercury incorporation into the food web. Here, the emphasis is on key, but still poorly understood, processes governing the interactions between mercury species and phytoplankton, and macrophytes, two representatives of primary producers. Mass transfer to biota surface, adsorption to cell wall, internalization and release from ce

Photo-degradation (PD) of monomethylmercury (MMHg) is recognized as the most important process in mercury cycling that maintains MMHg at low concentration in water systems. Chloride ion (Cl(-)) is present widely in ecosystems and it may have an effect on MMHg PD. In this investigation, MMHg PD with various Cl(-) concentrations under different light radiation intensity and wavelength were performed in a quartz cylinder reactor. Various light radiations were obtained from xenon and ultraviolet (UV) bulbs. The results showed that the first order reaction coefficient decreased (1.35-0.37 h(-1)) wi

We report experimentally determined first-order rate constants of MeHg photolysis in three waters along a Boreal lake-wetland gradient covering a range of pH (3.8-6.6), concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC 17.5-81 mg L(-1)), total Fe (0.8-2.1 mg L(-1)), specific UV254 nm absorption (3.3-4.2 L mg(-1) m(-1)) and TOC/TON ratios (24-67 g g(-1)). Rate constants determined as a function of incident sunlight (measured as cumulative photon flux of photosynthetically active radiation, PAR) decreased in the order dystrophic lake > dystrophic lake/wetland > riparian wetland. Emission rates of gaseous monomethylmercury (CH(3)Hg(II)), as well as elemental mercury (Hg(0)) and dimethylmercury [(CH(3))(2)Hg(II)], were determined in Hg-contaminated water-sediment microcosms (duplicates of three treatments) by gaseous species-specific isotope dilution analysis (SSIDA). Incubation of approximately 500 g (wet mass) of sediments containing 30 mumol of ambient Hg with an addition of 2.6 mumol of (201)Hg(II) tracer resulted in average (n = 6) gaseous emissions of 84 +/- 26, 100 +/- 37, and 830 +/- 380 pmol of ambient CH(3)Hg(II), CH(3)(201)Hg(II), and (201)Hg(0), respectively

Human hair is frequently used as a bioindicator of mercury exposure. We have used X-ray absorption spectroscopy to examine the chemical forms of mercury in human hair samples taken from individuals with high fish consumption and concomitant exposure to methylmercury. The mercury is found to be predominantly methylmercury-cysteine or closely related species, comprising approximately 80% of the total mercury, with the remainder an inorganic thiolate-coordinated mercuric species. No appreciable role was found for selenium in coordinating mercury in hair.

Mercury speciation, controls on methylmercury (MeHg) production, and bed sediment-pore water partitioning of total Hg (THg) and MeHg were examined in bed sediment from eight geochemically diverse streams where atmospheric deposition was the predominant Hg input. Across all streams, sediment THg concentrations were best described as a combined function of sediment percent fines (%fines; particles < 63 microm) and organic content. MeHg concentrations were best described as a combined function of organic content and the activity of the Hg(II)-methylating microbial community and were comparable to

To determine the relationship between soluble methylmercury and soil characteristics which was contaminated by mercury, several experiments were conducted. As a result, a good correlation was founding between the leached methylmercury level from soil and the EC (electronic conductivity) level of soil. Moreover, to grasp the relationship between soluble methylmercury and soluble anions from soil, several anions (Cl(-), NO(3-), SO(4) (2-)) were measured using the ion chromatography method. Although the correlation coefficient was small (r = 0.40), only a correlation between the level of SO(4) (2

Recent studies indicate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) are annually transported into the San Francisco Bay-Delta (Bay-Delta) as a result of historic gold and Hg mining activities. We examined temporal and spatial variation in concentrations of total Hg (Hg(T)) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) in surficial sediments of various ecosystem types in the Bay-Delta. We sampled surficial sediments across the Bay-Delta system and found Hg(T) sediment concentrations in the central Delta were generally 100-200 ng g(-1) and increased westward through Suisun Bay to 250-350 ng g(-1). MMHg concentrations in

While biofilms are now known to be the predominant form of microbial growth in nature, very little is yet known about their role in environmental mercury (Hg) methylation. Findings of Hg methylation in periphyton communities have indicated the importance of investigating how environmental biofilms affect Hg methylation, as periphyton can be the base of the food webs in aquatic ecosystems. Chemical speciation influences the microbial uptake and methylation of inorganic Hg by planktonic cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria; however, the effect of speciation on Hg methylation by biofilm cultures

In the nature, inorganic forms of mercury (Hg) may be transformed to the organic, very toxic, methyl-Hg. Occasionally methyl-Hg has been detected in plants, also so in the aquatic macrophyte water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), which is a popular vegetable in tropical regions. The objectives of this study were to investigate if methyl-Hg is formed and/or degraded in water spinach. Water spinach plants were exposed to inorganic Hg via spiked soil or spiked nutrient solution. Tests were performed in a climate chamber and in experimental units, one for each individual plant, that were equipped with

Evaluation of mercury exposure in an individual patient ideally includes the presenting history, physical examination, consideration of the differential diagnosis, and mercury analysis of blood and urine specimens. Analysis of mercury in hair specimens may supply useful supplemental information about exposure to organic compounds such as methylmercury, particularly to help reconstruct the pattern of prior exposure. The most appropriate specimen is generally terminal-type hair from the occipital-neck junction, clamped to maintain strand alignment, and oriented to the scalp. Hair from the initia

Mercury is one of the most toxic and hazardous pollutant which occurs in the environment in different chemical forms, of which methylmercury is the most dangerous. Recently it was recognised that long-term anthropogenic inputs of mercury into environment resulted in the global mercury pollution and it was concluded that action should be taken to quantify the pollution sources and reduce human-generated releases of mercury. This paper presents new data on mercury levels in aquatic sediments from about 15 Croatian rivers, lakes and estuaries. It also brings data on mercury concentrations in soil
