Realization of Quantum Spin Hall Insulator Superlattice with Emergent Multigap-Like Helical Edge States.

The functional quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHI), protected by time-reversal symmetry against single-particle backscattering, hold great promise for dissipationless quantum electronics. Realization of QSHI with gapped helical edge states, which would enable deterministic on/off switching of the edge-channel conductance is a key requirement for programmable topological circuits. Here, we report realization of superlattice-modulated QSHI HfTe5 hosting emergent multigap-like helical edge states. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we identify a reconstruction-induced periodic

Regulating Rotational Dynamics of Co-Adsorbed Guest Molecules via Halogen Bonds in Functionalized Pores of Self-Assembled Molecular Networks at the Liquid-Solid Interface.

Understanding and controlling molecular rotation on surfaces is crucial for the development of molecular-scale artificial motors that operate at interfaces. Herein, it is reported the successful co-adsorption of guest molecules within the functionalized 2D pores of self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) through directional halogen bonding, as confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Specifically, the porous SAMN formed by dehydrobenzo[12]annulene derivative DBA-Py with a pyridyl group at the termini of its three alkoxy chains, hosts an iodinated trigonal guest molecule, tris(4-iodophenyl

Using Achiral Monomers to Synthesize Organometallic Chiral Copolymers on an Achiral Surface.

Preparing chiral polymers by using achiral building blocks in an achiral reaction environment is very demanding because this strategy avoids the use of expensive chiral reagents. Here, a surface-confined and sequence-controlled chiral copolymer is synthesized by the organometallic reactions between the achiral precursors 4,4″-dibromo-1,1':3',1''-terphenyl and 1-ethynyl-4-[2-(4-ethynylphenyl)ethynyl]benzene on an achiral Ag(111) surface. Combined scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory explorations show that the terminal alkyne and aromatic bromide precursors undergo dehydro

Tailoring Pt-Based Organometallic Porous Network on Ag(111): A Model System for "Host-Guest" Chemistry.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be versatile platforms for anchoring individual metal atoms, which can act as single-atom catalysts. Due to their well-defined geometric and electronic structure, high porosity, and adjustable pore size, MOFs can modulate the catalytic performance of anchored individual atoms. In this work, we explored the surface-assisted synthesis of 2D surface metal-organic networks (SMONs) of 1,3,5-tris-[4-(pyridine)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-benzene] (TPyPPB) coordinated with Pt atoms on Ag(111) by using scanning tunneling microscopy at room temperature. The Pt deposit

Role of Cu Oxide and Cu Adatoms in the Reactivity of CO2 on Cu(110).

We investigate the interaction of CO2 with metallic and oxidized Cu(110) surfaces using a combination of near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (NAP-STM) and theoretical calculations. While the Cu(110) and full CuO films are inert, the interface between bare Cu(110) and the CuO film is observed to react instantly with CO2 at a 10 mbar pressure. The reaction is observed to proceed from the interfacial sites of CuO/Cu(110). During reaction with CO2, the CuO/Cu(110) interface releases Cu adatoms which combine with CO3 to produce a variety of added Cu-CO3 structures, whose stability d

A 2D heavy fermion CePb3 kagome material on silicon: emergence of unique spin polarized states for spintronics.

We report on the successful synthesis of a 2D atomically thin heavy-fermion CePb3 kagome compound on a Si(111) surface. Growth and morphology were controlled and characterized through scanning tunneling microscopy observations revealing the high crystalline quality of the sample. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements revealed the giant highly-anisotropic Rashba-like spin splitting of the surface states and semi-metallic character of the spectrum. According to the DFT calculations, the occupied hole and unoccupied electron states with huge spin-orbit splitting and out-of-plane

Ceria-based model catalysts: fundamental studies on the importance of the metal-ceria interface in CO oxidation, the water-gas shift, CO2 hydrogenation, and methane and alcohol reforming.

Model metal/ceria and ceria/metal catalysts have been shown to be excellent systems for studying fundamental phenomena linked to the operation of technical catalysts. In the last fifteen years, many combinations of well-defined systems involving different kinds of metals and ceria have been prepared and characterized using the modern techniques of surface science. So far most of the catalytic studies have been centered on a few reactions: CO oxidation, the hydrogenation of CO2, and the production of hydrogen through the water-gas shift reaction and the reforming of methane or alcohols. Enantiomer surface chemistry: conglomerate versus racemate formation on surfaces.

Research on surface chirality is motivated by the need to develop functional chiral surfaces for enantiospecific applications. While molecular chirality in 3D has been the subject of study for almost two centuries, many aspects of 2D chiral surface chemistry have yet to be addressed. In 3D, racemic mixtures of chiral molecules tend to aggregate into racemate (molecularly heterochiral) crystals much more frequently than conglomerate (molecularly homochiral) crystals. Whether chiral adsorbates on surfaces preferentially aggregate into heterochiral rather than homochiral domains (2D crystals or c

Switching of single-molecule magnetic properties of TbIII -porphyrin double-decker complexes and observation of their supramolecular structures on a carbon surface.

Double-decker complexes based on single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are a class of highly promising molecules for applications in molecular spintronics, wherein control of both the ligand oxidative states and the 2D supramolecular structure on carbon materials is of great importance. This study focuses on the synthesis and study of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (OEP)-Tb(III) double-decker complexes with different electronic structures comprising protonated, anionic, and radical forms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that only the anionic and radical forms of the OEP-Tb(III)

Microcontroller-based digital lock-in kelvin probe system using a self-resonant piezoelectric buzzer plate.

The vibrating parallel-plate capacitor-based Kelvin probe (KP) technique is a well-established method for measuring the contact potential difference (CPD) between a sample and a reference material, widely used in surface science and device characterization. In the present work, a compact and low-cost KP system is developed using simple and easily accessible electronic components for ambient-condition CPD measurements. A 35 mm diameter piezoelectric buzzer plate is employed for periodic modulation of a metallic reference probe, providing a compact and mechanically rigid alternative to conventio

Sarcoptic mange in free-ranging raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Japan.

Sarcoptes scabiei infestation was diagnosed in three freshly dead free-ranging raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The dogs presented with an alopecic pruritic skin disease, with signs of alopecia on the ears, muzzle, around the eyes, elbow, thigh and the neck, and hyperpigmented and crusted skin lesions, which had a severe malodour. Skin scrapings revealed the presence of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Histopathology of lesions demonstrated marked acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis and fungal elements, which were subsequently identified as Acremonium sp.

Electron spin resonance in scanning probe microscopy: From single-spin spectroscopy to atomically engineered quantum operations.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) is one of the most powerful spectroscopic methods for probing systems with unpaired electronic spins. Conventional ESR has usually relied on the detection of large spin ensembles, thereby averaging over local environments and suppressing microscopic information that is central to surface science, molecular magnetism, and quantum nanoscience. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) changes this situation. By combining magnetic resonance with the spatial resolution and manipulation capabilities of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), ESR c

Characterisation of cuticular inflation development and ultrastructure in Trichuris muris using correlative X-ray computed tomography and electron microscopy.

The parasitic nematode Trichuris trichiura is a significant burden on public health in developing countries, and currently available drugs exhibit a poor cure rate. Worms live within a specialised tunnel of host intestinal epithelial cells and have anterior-ventral projections of the cuticle termed "cuticular inflations", which are thought to be involved in host-parasite interactions. This work aimed to characterise structure and suggest a function of cuticular inflations in the most tractable and widely-used model of trichuriasis, Trichuris muris. Using scanning electron microscopy, we show f

Subphthalocyanine Platform for Single-Molecule Machines on Surface: Ligand-Directed Adsorption on Au(111).

For the development of single-molecule machines on surfaces, a vertical molecular geometry based on a simple, common platform is a promising design approach. This could allow decoupling of the active unit from the supporting surface and obtaining of a flexible modular system. An ideal platform for this purpose is subphthalocyanine with its bowl-shaped geometry and axial functionalization. We functionalized SubPcs with a series of vertical, axial ligands with varying conjugation lengths. Their adsorption on the Au(111) surface was studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, suppor

Dimensional Scaling Effect in Percolative Oxide Semiconductor Transistors.

Percolation transport dominates the charge conduction in amorphous and polycrystalline semiconductors. This study identifies a dimensional scaling effect unique to transistors using percolative semiconductors as channel materials, where the materials' percolation threshold (pc) exhibits a strong correlation with the transistor threshold voltage (VT). We demonstrate that both parameters are fundamentally governed by the semiconductor channel geometry. By reducing channel thickness, width, or length, pc is modulated because the availability of conductive pathways is constrained by the channel di

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Isomeric Metal (N^C^N)Cl Coordination Complexes (Metal = Pt, Pd) with Multiple Conductance Pathways in Single-Molecule Junctions.

The present work provides insight into the effect of connectivity within isomeric 3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-phenyl (N^C^N) platinum and palladium complexes on their electron transmission properties within gold|molecule|gold junctions. The ligands 3,5-bis-(4-(methylthio)-pyridin-2-yl)-phenyl hexanoate (L m H) and 3,5-bis-(5-(methylthio)-pyridin-2-yl)-phenyl hexanoate (L p H) were synthesized and coordinated with either PtCl or PdCl to form complexes Pt m , Pt p , Pd m and Pd p . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements evaluated the contacting modes of the molecules in the junctions. A

Formation, Structure, and Thermal Annealing Effects of Ordered Self-Assembled Monolayers of 4-Fluorobenzeneselenol on Au(111).

The formation, surface structure, and thermal annealing effects of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) via vapor deposition of 4-fluorobenzeneselenol (4-FBSeH) on Au(111) at room temperature were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The most prominent structural feature is that 4-fluorobenzeneselenolate (4-FBSe) SAMs on Au(111) are composed of numerous SAM-covered Au adatom islands, regardless of the deposition time. High-resolution STM observations revealed that the ordered phase of 4-FBSe SAMs was formed after very short deposition times of 30 s and 3 min, whereas the disorde

Reactive Molecular Beam Epitaxy Growth of a 1T-FeS2 Single-Layer-Atomic Structure, Moiré, and Decoupling via Intercalation.

Two-dimensional (2D) iron disulfide (FeS2), in its 1T polymorph, is a promising candidate for high-Curie-temperature ferromagnetic applications. Unlike typical van der Waals materials, FeS2 lacks a naturally lamellar bulk structure and thus cannot be prepared by exfoliation. Consequently, it exists solely as a synthetic 2D magnet, primarily produced via chemical vapor deposition. Here, we propose an alternative synthesis method: reactive molecular beam epitaxy, where an iron layer predeposited on a Au(111) substrate is sulfurized to form FeS2. Structural and compositional analyses of the resul

Magnetic Field-Induced Polar Order in Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide Transistors.

In semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (ML-TMDs), broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling result in spin-valley lock-in effects so that the valley degeneracy may be lifted by external magnetic fields, potentially leading to real-space structural transformation. Here, magnetic field (B)-induced giant electric hysteretic responses to back-gate voltages are reported in ML-MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) on SiO2/Si at temperatures < 20 K. The observed hysteresis increases with |B| up to 12 T and is tunable by varying the temperature. Raman spectroscopic
