Background Physical exercise during pregnancy offers significant benefits for maternal and fetal health, improving cardiovascular fitness, managing weight, and reducing risks of gestational diabetes and hypertension. Despite these benefits, the role of midwives in promoting exercise is critical but often underexplored. Materials and methods This cross-sectional quantitative study surveyed 172 midwives using a structured questionnaire to assess their knowledge and attitudes towards physical exercise during pregnancy. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests, were used

Midwife-led continuity of care models have been linked to better clinical outcomes in certain developed countries. However, there is a paucity of research on these models in developing nations. This quasi-experimental study was conducted on primiparous women who referred to one private midwifery center and two public hospitals in Ahvaz, Iran to evaluate the effect of team midwifery care on maternal and neonatal outcomes of pregnant women in Iran. Two hundred women were allocated either into the experimental (n = 100) or control (n = 100) groups. Women in the experimental group, received team m

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health (PMH) conditions are associated with adverse outcomes such as maternal suicide, preterm birth and longer-term childhood sequelae. Midwifery continuity of care (one midwife or a small group of midwives) has demonstrated benefits for women and newborns, including a reduction in preterm birth and improvements in maternal anxiety/worry and depression.
AIM: To determine if midwifery care provided through a Midwifery Group Caseload Practice model is associated with improved perinatal outcomes for women who have anxiety and depression and/or other perinatal mental

OBJECTIVE: To describe what women view as important aspects of care when giving birth in freestanding midwifery-led units in Norway.
METHODS: Data from four open-ended questions in the Babies Born Better survey, Version 1, 2 and 3 was used. We performed inductive content analysis to explore and describe women's experiences with the care they received.
RESULTS: In all, 190 women who had given birth in midwifery-led units in Norway between 2010 and 2020 responded to the B3 survey. The final sample comprised 182 respondents. The analysis yielded three main categories: 1) The immediate birth sur

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this research was to explore how New Zealand midwifery acupuncturists manage mild-to-moderate antenatal anxiety and depression (AAD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey (Surveymonkey®) on midwives' perceptions of acupuncture for treating AAD was distributed late in 2019 to midwives who completed a Certificate in Midwifery Acupuncture. Data were collected on referrals and on acupuncture and complementary and alternative medicine use for AAD and associated symptoms of concern (SoC), such as low-back and pelvic pain (LBPP), sleep issues, stress, other pain, and pregnancy issu

BACKGROUND: There has been an increased focus on clinical practice that may reduce severe perineal trauma due to awareness of the associated morbidity. Knowledge regarding the best practice to reduce these injuries is limited. Collegial midwifery assistance during the second stage of labour that involves an additional midwife being present has recently been implemented into many Swedish birth units with the aim of reducing severe perineal trauma. However, no studies have been conducted to evaluate midwives' experiences and views of this practice.
AIM: The aim of this study was to explore midw

INTRODUCTION: Across Canada and internationally, access to abortion remains challenging, particularly for those living in rural and remote communities. International research and policy call for the training of advanced practice clinicians, including midwives, to provide abortion services to fill the ever-increasing access gap. Research in other jurisdictions has examined the attitudes of midwives toward this potential expansion of scope of practice, but such studies have not been undertaken in British Columbia. This qualitative research study explored the attitudes of registered midwives towa

BACKGROUND: Information and communication technologies are increasingly used in health care to meet demands of efficiency, safety and patient-centered care. At a large Danish regional hospital, women report their physical, mental health and personal needs prior to their first antenatal visit. Little is known about the process of self-reporting health, and how this information is managed during the client-professional meeting.
AIM: To explore women's experiences of self-reporting their health status and personal needs online prior to the first midwifery visit, and how this information may affe

In this first paper in a series of four papers on midwifery, we aimed to examine, comprehensively and systematically, the contribution midwifery can make to the quality of care of women and infants globally, and the role of midwives and others in providing midwifery care. Drawing on international definitions and current practice, we mapped the scope of midwifery. We then developed a framework for quality maternal and newborn care using a mixed-methods approach including synthesis of findings from systematic reviews of women's views and experiences, effective practices, and maternal and newborn

OBJECTIVE: To learn the adaptations and transformations that midwives from abroad must go through in order to integrate into the practice of Quebec midwifery, which is founded on a concept of birth akin to the holistic model.
DESIGN: Qualitative research achieved through semi-structured interviews with an ethnological approach for data collection and analysis.
SETTING: Quebec, Canada.
PARTICIPANTS: 11 immigrant midwives practising in Quebec. Interviews were also conducted with midwives from Quebec trained abroad (3) and trained in Quebec (5).

BACKGROUND: Childbirth in the USA, including Louisiana, has become increasingly medicalised, with high rates of obstetrical interventions even among clinically low-risk pregnancies. Midwifery-led care has been associated with fewer interventions and comparable or improved outcomes for low-risk births, but midwives remain under-represented in Louisiana hospitals. To improve perinatal outcomes in the Gulf South through increasing midwifery care, data are needed on barriers and facilitators to integrating midwifery care, trends in midwifery care utilisation and birth outcomes by provider type.

BACKGROUND: Midwifery education involves not only the acquisition of clinical knowledge and technical skills but also the development of professional values, attitudes, and identity essential for woman-centred care. Although midwifery education in Turkey has undergone substantial reform, disparities in educational resources and clinical learning opportunities persist, particularly in Eastern regions. This study aimed to explore midwifery students’ educational experiences, professional perceptions, and future expectations in Eastern Turkey. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was condu

PROBLEM: Abortion is time-sensitive, and barriers to care such as a lack of providers, long wait times, multiple appointments in different locations, and discrimination exist globally. In Canada, midwifery services are accessible across various populations, suggesting a potential to enhance access to quality abortion care, particularly for underserved individuals.
BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization and the Canadian Association of Midwives support the integration of comprehensive abortion care within midwifery practice. When midwives provide abortion services, international evidence ind

OBJECTIVE: To compare perinatal and maternal morbidity and birth interventions in low-risk women giving birth in two freestanding midwifery units (FMUs) and two obstetric units (OUs).
DESIGN: A cohort study with a matched control group.
SETTING: The region of North Jutland, Denmark.
PARTICIPANTS: 839 low-risk women intending FMU birth and a matched control group of 839 low-risk women intending OU birth were included at the start of care in labour. OU women were individually chosen to match selected obstetric/socio-economic characteristics of FMU women. Analysis was by intention to treat.

BACKGROUND: Women who have experienced a postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) 'requiring treatment or transfusion' are typically advised to plan birth in obstetric-led settings in subsequent pregnancies. Many UK alongside midwifery units (AMU) admit women for labour care following a previous PPH. We aimed to describe outcomes in women admitted for labour care to AMUs following a previous PPH, compare outcomes with other multiparous women admitted to the same AMUs, and explore risk factors for recurrence.
METHODS: A national cohort and nested case-control study using the UK Midwifery Study System (UKM

PROBLEM: Few midwives are given the opportunity to provide continuity of midwife care despite the suggested benefits.
BACKGROUND: Translating evidence into practice remains challenging, particularly in low-income settings where workforce limitations, structural constraints, and leadership capacity influence implementation. Although continuity of care models have gained increasing attention globally, little is known about how midwives in low-income countries perceive their readiness and capacity to initiate and sustain such models.

BACKGROUND: Preparing midwifery graduates to be confident, competent, and resilient is essential for workforce sustainability, yet students report a disconnect between academic preparation and clinical realities. Increasing care complexity, workforce shortages, and variable clinical learning environments globally highlight the need to examine how educational strategies support effective transition to practice.
OBJECTIVE: To map and synthesise the evidence regarding educational approaches, learning experiences, and transition-to-practice factors that influence preparedness for professional pra
