Migraine Headaches in a Pediatric Patient With SETD5-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder and Inflammatory Comorbidities: A Case Report.

SETD5-related neurodevelopmental disorder is a rare genetic condition caused by a mutation in the SETD5 gene, which has previously been shown to cause intellectual disability (ID) along with dysmorphic facies, behavioral difficulties, congenital heart defects, and developmental delays. This report describes an eight-year-old patient with known SETD5 and inflammatory conditions who presented for evaluation of severe headaches consistent with migraines. This patient had associated photophobia and nausea, as well as pain around the eye that was severe enough to awaken him and was only relieved wi

Clinical features and comorbidities associated with migraine in bipolar disorder: Results from the FACE-BD cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) frequently experience comorbid medical conditions, with migraine being among the most common. While research on migraine prevalence in BD is growing, the associated clinical features, comorbidities, and treatments remain underexplored and sometimes inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and comorbidities associated with migraine in a large cohort of adults with BD. METHODS: We assessed 4348 outpatients with BD attending FondaMental Advanced Centers of Expertise. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected

Do Common Genetic Factors Underlie Comorbidity Between Migraine and Major Depressive Disorder in Youth?

BACKGROUND: Migraine and major depressive disorder (MDD) are common, recurring conditions with comorbidity documented in clinical and community samples of both adults and youth. However, the etiology remains unknown. This study aims to (1) examine the prevalence and association between migraine and MDD in a large, diverse youth sample; (2) assess whether polygenic scores (PGSs) from adult genome-wide association studies are associated with these disorders in youth; and (3) evaluate shared genetic susceptibility underlying migraine-depression comorbidity. METHODS: The sample includes 8496 yout

Temporomandibular disorder presenting as chronic migraine; the diagnostic role of MRI and interdisciplinary evaluation: A clinical report.

Temporomandibular disorders can mimic migraines and delay appropriate care. A 40-year-old man with 18 months of refractory temporal headache and facial pain, initially treated as migraine, underwent imaging that revealed bilateral temporalis hypertrophy and temporomandibular joint degenerative changes. More specifically, an interdisciplinary assessment confirmed temporomandibular disorders. Multimodal management included occlusal adjustment with a nocturnal occlusal device, counseling to reduce parafunction, physical therapy, low-level laser therapy, and targeted botulinum toxin A. Symptoms im

Impact of migraine and fibromyalgia on temporomandibular disorder: A retrospective study on pain, psychological factors and quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the impact of migraine and fibromyalgia (FM) in TMD patients, focusing on pain, anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QoL). Additionally, we investigated how these variables relate to the total number of comorbidities to gain insights into their interactions. METHODS: A retrospective data collection was conducted during January 2016 to December 2022, involving 409 adult TMD patients. TMD patients were categorised into four groups: those without comorbidity (TMD-only) and those with comorbid migraine and/or fibromyalgia (TMD + MG, TMD + FM and TMD + MG + FM)

Position Paper on Post-Traumatic Headache: The Relationship Between Head Trauma, Stress Disorder, and Migraine.

Traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a major public health concern, with mild TBI (mTBI) constituting the vast majority of the injuries. Post-traumatic headache (PTH) is one of the most frequent symptoms that follow a mTBI, occurring in isolation with a tension-type or migraine phenotype, or more often as part of a complex neurobehavioural array of symptoms. The existence of PTH as a separate entity from the primary headaches is still a matter of debate. Classification issues and a lack of methodologically robust epidemiological and clinical studies have made it difficult to elucidate the mechanis

Association study between the phenotype migraine without aura-panic disorder and dopaminergic receptor genes.

Clinical and epidemiological evidence suggests that migraine often co-occurs with psychopathological conditions. Several longitudinal and population-based studies have suggested that migraine and panic disorder might share a common predisposition. An abnormal dopaminergic function has been hypothesized to be involved as etiological factor in panic disorder as well as in migraine. Epidemiological and molecular data suggest the role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of both migraine and panic attack disorder. We assessed the presence of panic disorder in 100 probands suffering from migraine

Migrainous disorder and headache of the tension-type not fulfilling the criteria: a follow-up study in children and adolescents.

In this follow-up study in children and adolescents with recurrent headaches classified as migrainous disorder (IHS 1.7) and headache of the tension-type not fulfilling the criteria (IHS 2.3), 28.6% were headache-free and 71.4% still had headaches 2-5 years after the first examination. The majority remained in the same one-digit IHS diagnosis, whereas 20% changed from migraine to tension-type headache or vice versa. The number of IHS criteria fulfilled increased significantly from the first to the second examination. The reason for diagnosing IHS 1.7 and IHS 2.3 most often was a short headache

Risks and familial coaggregation of suicide, accident mortality, and psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives of individuals with migraine.

Studies have revealed a comorbidity to be common between patients with migraine and those with psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, considering the substantial epidemiological differences in the prevalence of migraine between Western and Asian countries, further investigation was required to determine whether findings regarding familial coaggregation of migraine and psychiatric disorders can be generalized to Asian populations. Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database, we included 822,773 first-degree relatives (FDRs) of

Assessing attack-related fear in headache disorders-Structure and psychometric properties of the Fear of Attacks in Migraine Inventory.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a self-report questionnaire for the assessment of attack-related fear in migraine, and to determine its factor structure as well as its psychometric properties by the primary analysis of a cross-sectional survey's data. BACKGROUND: High fear of attacks in migraine increases the burden of disease and is assumed to have a negative impact on the course of the disease. Little is known about the structure and dimensionality of attack-related fear, and a valid instrument for the comprehensive assessment is lacking. METHODS: Based on a literature search and in

Regulatory Effects of Acupuncture on Emotional Disorders in Patients With Menstrual Migraine Without Aura: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Background: Menstrual migraine without aura (MMoA) refers to a specific type of migraine that is associated with the female ovarian cycle. It is particularly serious and has brought huge life pressure and mental burden to female patients. Acupuncture has been commonly used to prevent migraines and relieve concomitant emotional disorders; however, the physiological mechanism underlying this intervention remains unclear. This study aimed to use resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) to investigate whether acupuncture can modulate brain function and if the potential influenc

A scoping review of hormonal clinical trials in menstrual cycle-related brain disorders: Studies in premenstrual mood disorder, menstrual migraine, and catamenial epilepsy.

UNLABELLED: Cyclic variations in hormones during the normal menstrual cycle underlie multiple central nervous system (CNS)-linked disorders, including premenstrual mood disorder (PMD), menstrual migraine (MM), and catamenial epilepsy (CE). Despite this foundational mechanistic link, these three fields operate independently of each other. In this scoping review (N = 85 studies), we survey existing human research studies in PMD, MM, and CE to outline the exogenous experimental hormone manipulation trials conducted in these fields. We examine a broad range of literature across these disorders in

Bidirectional analysis of the association between migraine and post-traumatic stress disorder in Nurses' Health Study II.

AIMS: Migraine and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are both twice as common in women as men. Cross-sectional studies have shown associations between migraine and several psychiatric conditions, including PTSD. PTSD is disproportionally common among patients in headache clinics, and individuals with migraine and PTSD report greater disability from migraines and more frequent medication use. To further clarify the nature of the relationship between PTSD and migraine, we conducted bidirectional analyses of the association between (1) migraine and incident PTSD and (2) PTSD and incident migr
