Hypervigilance toward ambiguous or threatening stimuli is a prominent feature in many trauma survivors including active and returning soldiers. This study set out to investigate the factors that contribute to hypervigilance in a mixed sample. One hundred forty-five individuals, 50 of whom were war zone veterans, filled out a series of questionnaires including the Hypervigilance Questionnaire (HVQ; Kimble, Fleming, & Bennion, 2009). Other participants included military cadets, college undergraduates, and a traumatized community sample. In this sample, a history of military deployment and posttr

BACKGROUND: Antimalarial chemoprophylaxis with doxycycline is taken by German soldiers on tropical deployments. In a case-control-assessment, diagnostic metagenomics was applied to comparatively assess antimicrobial resistance genes in enteric microbiomes of soldiers with and without medical history of doxycycline-based antimalarial chemoprophylaxis on deployment.
METHODS: Two groups of 26 military deployment returnees, each either exposed or non-exposed to antimalarial chemoprophylaxis with doxycycline, were matched by deployment site and period, age and sex in declining order of prioritizat

BACKGROUND: Infectious diarrhea is an important problem among travelers and deployed US military overseas causing substantial morbidity due to acute illness and may result in burdensome postinfectious sequelae.
METHODS: The nonsystemic antibiotic rifaximin was evaluated for prevention of travelers' diarrhea (TD) in a US military and civilian adult beneficiary population in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. In all, 100 volunteers deployed to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, received rifaximin 1,100 mg once daily or placebo for 2 weeks, and participants were followed dail

A large body of research has been produced in recent years investigating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among military personnel following deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, resulting in apparent differences in PTSD prevalence. We compare prevalence estimates for current PTSD between military subgroups, providing insight into how groups may be differentially affected by deployment. Systematic literature searches using the terms PTSD, stress disorder, and acute stress, combined with terms relating to military personnel, identified 49 relevant papers. Studies with a sample size of less th

BACKGROUND: Screening for feigning and exaggeration in military populations is necessary for accurate interpretation of findings in clinical and research settings. The Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology (SIMS) is a commonly used symptom validity measure, but little is known about the impact of non-clinical factors on its performance. The primary objective of this study was to examine relationships among demographic and deployment-related characteristics and SIMS performance in a cohort of veterans and reservists.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-two participants with a history of

INTRODUCTION: Military spouses' health and well-being are pivotal to a healthy and strong United States military force; therefore, elucidating factors that contribute to spouses' health and well-being is important. Prior research has suggested that military spouses may engage in adequate physical activity for physical health; however, it is unknown how spouses' physical activity may benefit their lives in other ways, especially in light of the military context. Flourishing is a condition in which all parts of life are going well, indicating a more overall assessment of health and well-being. T

Identifying historical mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is important for many clinical care reasons; however, diagnosing mild TBI is inherently challenging and utility of screening is unknown. This study compares a standardized research process to an established clinical process for screening and diagnosis of historical mild TBI during combat deployment in a military/Veteran cohort. Using validated instruments, the Long-term Impact of Military-relevant Brain Injury Consortium-Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (LIMBIC-CENC) prospective longitudinal study (PLS) screens for all potential

Heart rate variability is a physiological measure associated with autonomic nervous system activity. This study hypothesized that lower pre-deployment HRV would be associated with higher post-deployment post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Three-hundred-forty-three Army National Guard soldiers enrolled in the Warriors Achieving Resilience (WAR) study were analyzed. The primary outcome was PTSD symptom severity using the PTSD Checklist - Military version (PCL) measured at baseline, 3- and 12-month post-deployment. Heart rate variability predictor variables included: high frequency po

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the prevalence of incarceration and the association with deployment among veterans of the first Persian Gulf War (GW).
METHODS: A structured telephone interview of military personnel from Iowa deployed to the Persian Gulf and a comparison sample of nondeployed military personnel was conducted. The interview consisted of validated questions, validated instruments, and investigator-derived questions to assess relevant medical and psychiatric conditions. A total of 4,886 subjects were randomly drawn from one of four study domains, i.e., GW regular military, GW

Epidemiological data identify risk factors related to substance use among military service members to inform prevention and treatment. Less is known about how motivations and risks for substance use vary over a military service career. The study goal was to explore substance use patterns and motivations among a sample of United States undergraduate student veterans in order to identify periods of risk. Methods: Qualitative interviews were conducted (n = 31) between December 2018 and April 2019. Transcripts were coded in ATLAS.ti using thematic content analysis. Results: Interviews revealed com

INTRODUCTION: Military-connected students in public schools face a unique set of stressors that may impact their wellbeing and academic functioning.
METHODS: Twenty-four youth in the 7th to 12th grades who had an active-duty parent (mother or father) serving in the U.S. Armed Forces were interviewed. Participants completed a qualitative interview while actively completing a Life History Calendar (LHC) to mark deployment and family military service milestones and discuss how they impacted the youth respondent. This study used Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to explore the interplay and

OBJECTIVES: Transmission of polio poses a threat to military forces when deploying to regions where such viruses are endemic. US-born soldiers generally enter service with immunity resulting from childhood immunization against polio; moreover, new recruits are routinely vaccinated with inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), supplemented based upon deployment circumstances. Given residual protection from childhood vaccination, risk-based vaccination may sufficiently protect troops from polio transmission.
METHODS: This analysis employed a mathematical system for polio transmission within milita

Military families face many difficulties, including a parent deploying to a warzone and the subsequent risk of returning with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms of PTSD are associated with parenting difficulties; however, little is known about how PTSD symptoms may be associated with emotion socialization (ES), a set of processes crucial to children's emotional well-being. This project investigated observed ES behaviors in deployed and non-deployed parents in a sample of 224 predominantly White, non-Hispanic National Guard/Reserve (NG/R) families with deployed fathers,

BACKGROUND: Recent military conflicts in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom), Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom), and elsewhere have been associated with psychological impacts among military personnel. However, relatively little is known about the relationship between those conflicts and psychological health of military health care professionals. Previous work has shown certain demographic factors associated with diagnosed mental health conditions after deployment. However, unique exposures in the deployed environment may be present that are also associated. Understanding the relationship bet

Military veterans may exhibit a multitude of criminogenic risk factors that can result in contact with the criminal justice system. These include mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, antisocial cognitions, family or marital dysfunction, homelessness, and unemployment. Although prior research has examined these risks as they correspond to arrest, court processing, or incarceration, far fewer studies have investigated the context of veterans’ service histories inside prisons or how they relate to institutional infractions and misconduct. Further specificity into the continuity of mal

This study examines psychological stressors reported by Australian Navy Gulf War veterans in relation to the 1991 Gulf War and other military service. Using a 44-item questionnaire, veterans reported few direct-combat encounters during the Gulf War; however, they reported many other stressful experiences, including fear of death and perceived threat of attack, more frequently in relation to the Gulf War than other military service. Reporting of stressful experiences was associated with younger age, lower rank, and deployment at the height of the conflict. These experiences may partly explain i

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common mental health problems that military personnel encounter. It could be lifelong and affect every aspect of military personnel, including their mental and physical health, family and social interactions, and their work. However, in Ethiopia, the magnitude and its associated factors have not been well investigated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of PTSD and its associated factors among military personnel, who were admitted at the Northwest Command Level Three Military Hospital, Bahir Dar, Northwe

OBJECTIVES: The present analysis sought to explore the normative rates and correlates of school victimization and weapon carrying among military-connected and nonmilitary-connected youth in public schools in Southern California.
METHODS: Data are from a sub-sample of the 2011 California Healthy Kids Survey (N=14,512). Items to assess victimization and weapon carrying were separated into three categories: physical acts (e.g., being pushed or shoved), nonphysical acts (e.g., having rumors spread about them) and weapon carrying.
RESULTS: The bivariate results indicate that youth with a military

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage is the leading cause of death on the battlefield. Damage control resuscitation guidelines in the US military recommend whole blood as the preferred resuscitation product. The Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) has initiated low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) production and predeployment donor screening to make whole blood more available to military forces.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: ASBP donor centers updated procedures and labeling for LTOWB production. Donors are screened according to US Food and Drug Administration regulations and standard operating procedures. Gr

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are combustion pollutants that are released into the environment through natural events and anthropogenic activities. Exposures to PAHs occur in military personnel during garrison (non-combat) and active deployment (combat) environments. Exposures that occur at low levels during deployment could lead to health issues, post-deployment. A scoping review was conducted to address the pathways of exposure, and the adverse effects caused by PAHs in active-duty personnel and veterans. Out of 50,171 scientific publications screened from 5 databases, 296 studies
