Significance of additives to enhance the acceptance of poison bait in poultry rodents of Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Rodent infestation on poultry farms incurs heavy economic losses to this industry by causing feed loss and disease introduction. Development and continuous improvement of rodents control techniques are vital to minimize and control the damages caused by rodents. Here, we test the feed preference of rodents for locally available and palatable food grains viz. millet (whole), wheat (cracked) and rice (broken) and taste additives namely whole egg (5%), eggshell (5%), peanut cracked (5%) and yeast (2%) that were offered mixed in millet-wheat (50:50 by wt.) bait. We tested the preferences of differ

Fungus-benzimidazole interactions: a prerequisite to deploying egg-parasitic fungi Paecilomyces lilacinus and Verticillium chlamydosporium as biocontrol agents against fascioliasis and amphistomiasis in ruminant livestock.

In vitro trials investigating the effects of albendazole and triclabendazole anthelmintics on the growth profiles of the egg-parasitic fungi Paecilomyces lilacinus and Verticillium chlamydosporium were undertaken. In addition, in vivo trials were conducted in goats fed on millet grain cultures of each fungus and administered albendazole and triclabendazole anthelmintics. In vitro growth revealed V. chlamydosporium to be more sensitive to albendazole compared to P. lilacinus. In contrast, triclabendazole had the least inhibitory effect on in vitro growth of both P. lilacinus and V. chlamydospor

Allelopathic Effects of Extracts from Different Sorghum Parts on Giant Foxtail.

Giant foxtail is a common weed in foxtail millet fields, and continuous cropping of foxtail millet increases its occurrence. Rotating foxtail millet with sorghum is a major practice in the dry farming regions of northern China. Given this situation, this study combined Petri dish germination tests with pot experiments to clarify the allelopathic effects of water extracts from different sorghum parts on giant foxtail. Distilled water (SCK) was used as the control, and treatments included stock solution (S1), as well as 10× dilution (S2), 50× dilution (S3), and 100× dilution (S4) of water extrac

A tribute to Dr. Frank I Tovey on his 90th birthday.

This paper pays a tribute to Dr. Frank I Tovey on his 90th birthday which happens on September 1, 2011, and briefly describes the major findings in his research career and contributions as follows. The geographical prevalence of duodenal ulceration is related to staple diets. Unrefined wheat and maize, soya, certain pulses and millets are associated with a low prevalence while refined wheat, maize and rice, yams, cassava and green banana with a high prevalence. Predominant foodstuffs from low prevalence areas are ulceroprotective in rat peptic ulcer models. The protective activity lies in the

Comparison of the anti-diabetic effects of various grain and legume extracts in high-fat diet and streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced diabetic rats.

The anti-diabetic properties of whole groats and dietary fibers from various grains and legumes are well known. Nevertheless, studies on the anti-diabetic effects of their extracts are limited, and it is difficult to compare their efficacy. This study investigated the anti-diabetic potential of ethanol extracts from oats (OE), sorghum (SE), foxtail millet (FE), proso millet (PE), adzuki bean (AE), and black soybean (BE) in a high-fat diet and streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced diabetic rat models. The extracts, obtained using 99.9 % ethanol, were orally administered to diabetic rats for four

Prediction of in-vitro glycemic responses of biscuits in an engineered small intestine system.

The Glycemic Index (GI) indicates the effect of a food product on the increase/decrease in postprandial blood glucose levels. Monitoring the glycemic response is important, as it is associated with the human nutrition absorption. However, human or animal blood sampling involves financial, ethical, and other challenges. Accordingly, in the recent past, many human digestion models have been developed to understand the intricate changes that occur during human digestion and absorption processes. Dynamic models help in studying the digestion mechanics and hypotheses related to the health effects o

Measurement of tetracycline levels in parakeets.

Parakeets were fed hulled millet seed containing 0.5% chlortetracycline (CTC) or minocycline. Blood concentrations of more than 1 micrograms CTC/ml and more than 5 micrograms minocycline/ml were obtained. Equivalent drug assay results were obtained from blood specimens collected by venipuncture or by use of treated filter-paper discs. The latter is a fairly simple method for assaying CTC concentrations in blood of treated psittacines.

Gluten-Free Flours from Different Raw Materials as the Source of Vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B6.

Gluten-free (GF) products are those with a natural absence or acceptable level (<20 mg/kg) of gluten. They should be a part of a diet for people with gluten-related disorders, like celiac disease. Recently the popularity of a gluten-free diet (GFD) has risen extremely, because a lot of healthy individuals exclude gluten from their menus. According to the literature data on nutritional deficiencies in the GFD, this trend seems to be risky. This paper describes the nutritional value of 14 flours from different GF raw materials from the aspect of B-group vitamin content (B1, B2, B3, B6). Vitamins

Sickle Cell Trait Is a Risk Factor for Another Form of Altitude Illness.

Millet, Grégoire P, and Philippe Connes. Sickle cell trait is a risk factor for another form of altitude illness. High Alt Med Biol. 27:57-59, 2026.-Acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema, and high-altitude cerebral edema have been widely investigated. In this letter, we claim that beyond these three altitude illnesses, one cannot rule out an additional serious concern related to altitude exposure in a particular population; the individuals with sickle cell trait.

Advances in cereal protein applications for infant and Young child nutrition.

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of plant-derived proteins in infant and young child nutrition necessitates tailored amino acid profiles, high digestibility and strict safety controls. Cereal proteins, such as rice, oat, maize, millet, barley, and wheat, are widely used in complementary foods but face intrinsic limitations, notably lysine and tryptophan deficits, antinutritional factors that reduce bioavailability, gluten immunogenicity in wheat/barley, and inorganic arsenic risks in rice. SCOPE AND APPROACH: This review synthesizes recent advances in processing and formulation strategies, incl

Paternal genomic history and Y-chromosome phylogeny from the Chengdu Plain reveal multiple Indigenous East Asian farmer contributions to ancient Shu and their descendants.

BACKGROUND: The Chengdu Plain and surrounding regions (CPS) host a diverse mosaic of archaeological cultures and ethnolinguistic groups, yet the origins of these populations and the extent of Western Eurasian and East Asian influences remain unclear and underrepresented in genomic studies. As a molecular archaeological archive, Y-chromosome data provide vital insights into the paternal genetic history of ancient Shu populations and their descendants. METHODS: Here, we combine our newly generated genomic data with publicly available large-scale whole-Y-chromosome sequences from East Asia to re

Influence of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) flour on the physicochemical, functional, and sensory properties of multigrain gluten-free chapati.

This study investigated the incorporation of whole pumpkin flour from Punjab Samrat and B-10-224-3 cultivars into gluten-free chapatis (Indian flatbread) formulated with maize, soybean, and pearl millet. Proximate analysis identified Punjab Samrat as superior in protein (7.38%), fat (17.75%), and dietary fiber (16.33%), as well as bioactive compounds such as beta-carotene (32.50 mg/g) and lycopene (6.24 mg/100 g), supporting its selection for further analysis. The inclusion of 10% Punjab Samrat reduced pasting temperature (93.00 °C to 85.67 °C) and setback viscosity (556.67 cP to 371.67 cP), i

Mapping agricultural fragility in India through a yield gap vulnerability framework: a national-scale machine learning assessment.

In India, regional yield gaps continue to widen despite increased agricultural productivity, owing to socioeconomic inequality and climate variability. This study develops a novel Yield Gap Vulnerability (YGV) framework to measure agricultural fragility at the district-level by integrating agricultural, hydrological, meteorological, and socioeconomic indicators to observed yield gaps for major cereals (rice and wheat) and nutri-crops (maize and millet). An integrated Machine Learning (ML) approach is used that can support sustainable agricultural management, spatial planning, and risk reductio
